Will has likely told jokes himself that someone would be offended by, and he will have certainly laughed at jokes that people would be offended by. So why does he feel he has the right to act now? It's not really about the level of violence, which was mild, as you say, it's more that there is something shocking about it. It breaks a lot of social norms to go and do that... It's a violation of social norms, that's what it is. It was a shit joke, and an unkind one for his wife, but I can't get my head around the arrogance to calmly go up and slap or punch the person on stage. It feels like someone has just gone and done a massive shit in a family swimming pool, and then sat themselves back down again.

Agreed for adults but kids should be allowed hit bullies. Lost count of how many times I heard "Sticks and stones..." or "violence is never the answer" while I was getting bullied and it didn't help one bit. Punched the guy in his nose once and it stopped there and then. I think telling nice kids that "violence is never the answer" is the single most damaging message when it comes to bullying. The mental damage done by constant bullying is so much worse than a broken nose.

@@ttam1217 - I agree, I do say violence is not the solution, unless you or yours are being attacked. It is like Ukraine and war. You don't start a war, yet at the same time you don't roll over once you are attacked. And the statement, you should never hit a woman. Yet I recall that time a family were in a park and the child was stabbed by a random crazy woman. At such a time no man or woman should be questioning, for a split second, should I put this woman on her arse. Sadly over 2/3 of violence and murder happens to men. He made a favourable comparison in the joke. GI Jane is sexy, assertive, heroic; the standard action movie protagonist characterisrics. He didn't compare her to Vin Diesel. So he drew attention to her alopecia but didn't mock it. Is drawing attention to it at all a wrong thing to do? Not for me, not in this instance. Celebrities are their image and Jada Smith has been seen for 30 years with long hair and now has a shaved head. Rock was gently breaking the collective silence, signalling that its ok, she's still part of the gang. Gentle teasing among friends. That was how I interpreted it and what I speculate Rock's intention was. Especially given he made a black women's hair documentary. He's someone with a strong sense of justice and as one of the top comedians in the world, we can be sure he chooses his every word carefully and skillfully. That Jada Smith rejected the joke doesn't matter to the judgement of it.

He genuinely found the joke funny, she shot him “the look” to say “it’s not funny, get up and defend my honour”…honour?….what honour? She didn’t show any honour by braking her wedding vows….since then she has dominated him and hollowed him out to a shell of what he was. Was what he did ok? Hell no…! Can we understand why he did it….? Maybe…. I’ve seen the term cuck banded about, is he one? Who knows? But he does act very submissive. Sadly I think it will damage his career, and as the film rolls drop off or get smaller, my guess is she will drop him and he could then spiral out of control. Even if no charges filed, they should have removed him from the event and revealed him as best actor winner as a throwaway announcement and moved on with the show. Leaving him there undisciplined made it linger all night. And that harbored other people into thinking everything was okay.

If he was reprimanded, escorted out of the building and taken away by authorities the number of people lamely trying to argue it was acceptable would fucking plummet. It's easy to say it's just 2 millionaires having a spat, why does it matter? Really interesting actually about liking to have rules about how social shite goes when things go a bit odd. I’ve always felt like that; when you’re confronted with something that doesn’t have a clear path to take, and you feel like there’s no rule book and you don’t know what’s meant to be getting done. Violence, things that can’t be said, etc., but also just in general when life goes off script I feel pure untethered. One day I seen a wee old woman fall down some stairs at my work and there was this moment of panic and everyone looking at each other trying to figure out what the fuck was the right way to act, to react, what to do, and it wasn’t until this lassie I work with took control, ran over and started getting people to help that it all felt normal again. You get a few seconds when things like this happen when it’s like the rules have stopped and it sends your brain into panic mode cause there’s no script there now.

As well as that, a rehearsed (or even 'off the cuff') bit of slapstick between Will Smith & Chris Rock would have been perfectly understandable as part of the joke here. I thought it could have been staged at first - until I saw the whole thing in context - particularly with Will Smith berating Chris Rock from his seat, where he appears to have completely lost emotional control. It was the last thing i expected from Will Smith honestly, he's always seemed like one of the most reasonable down to earth guys in Hollywood. The joke didn't validate a slap no matter the circumstances, but the audacity to walk up with confidence on stage and slap the host of the Oscars, in front of the entirety of Hollywoods elite, and then sit back down and yell at him from the audience. It gave me insecure school bully vibes, like he was trying to act all macho to hide his insecurities. He shouldn't have slapped him in the first place, but not only did he slap him, he picked probably the most inappropriate time and place possible to do it. But honestly almost as bad as the action is how literally no one seemed to care. The audience were shocked, there was some awkward silence, and then what? The show just went on, and Will went on to WIN an award. He should have been kicked out, or forced to go up and apologize, anything really. I feel so bad for everyone else who won awards or did amazing performances that no one will care about because Will Smith acted like an insecure 12 year old. I've looked up to Will Smith my entire life, i don't think he should be "cancelled" or hated forever because of this, but it's a MASSIVE stain on his reputation and i'm sure i'm not the only one who lost a lot of respect for the him today. Hollywood is probably the most superficial and surface level society in the world. If something unexpected and awkward happens, it’s usually ignored until it’s collectively decided what the best spin to save face is. Finally, someone that's actually spoke sense, agree with everything said.. Yeah he was laughing when the joke was made, and your right, he looked over to Jade and saw her expression.. I didn't get the GI Joke, didn't even know she was suffering with Alopecia, but I do now, so will thousands of other people who didn't know before.. Will actually brought more attention towards Jade and her horrible condition than the Joke did.. His behaviour was out of order, his shouting & swearing .. twice !! If I was Jade I'd have been wishing the ground would swallow me up at his behaviour & outbursts.. Thanks Will, I now get the Joke.. by the way the GI haircut really suits her.. she's a Beauty with or without hair..

I really liked Will. Growing up Fresh Prince was one of my favorite shows and I respected his hustle. But feeling like you can get away with assaulting another person in front of everyone is unacceptable. Limmy's hit the nail on the head on this one, it's fuckin wild that anyone can defend this, it sets a dangerous precedent

At least we’ve learned one thing about Will Smith. The man’s really got a hair trigger.

I appreciate Limmy making the point about how Will's relationship 'issues' have nothing to do with this situation. Because 99% of lonely men are making that point about Jada, as if it's relevant.

It doesn't excuse it but it could play a part in explaining his head space. What on Earth is going on in his head is the real puzzler? That was not normal. You should watch their red table talk. It's bizarre and Will looks lost and confused and like his spirit is draining out of him while his wife explains how cheating on him was a good thing for her and therefore their marraige. Online for the world to see. It's not fucking normal and I have no idea how it must affect a person mentally but I'm guessing...not good.

@@kevtb874 Yeh i do think she isn't a good match for him, or has affected him poorly. But people are attacking Will for her behavior, as if that makes him less of a man. Which is completely wrong.

I head butted a kid , a lot bigger than me , when I was about 11. His father brought the kid round my house to have a go at me and tell my mum. The father was angry saying look what you done to him , and I looked at him with a bloody nose , blood round his face etc , it really stuck with me and I regretted it always. 30 or so years later I was out , buying a round and having a good time and a random purely by coincidence little bloke came up to me in the pub , sort of tugged at my shirt I looked round and said , who the fu’k are you , and he gave me the best headbutt you could imagine, an unrelated attack, it felt like a watermelon shot from a canon into my face , the ceiling felt like it fell on my head and I went down sort of knocked out , but I was down on one knee and got up , walked out the pub door to avoid embarrassment and walked home, I had cuts to head , a broken nose , a big gash to the side of my nose also , really properly beaten I filled a bath with blood, it was horrendous. Anyway, I got what I deserved, some kind of karma and I’m somewhat thankful, I think a lot of kids who are out stabbing people have no idea of how serious it is until they have the benefit of hindsight and a lot more should be taught at schools, violence is perceived as cool when your young , you have the gangster films, and then hip hop culture etc , looking back it’s a deep regret I have and I’m ashamed of myself, live n learn I guess!

Imagine if it had been Ricky Gervais hosting the show. Will Smith would have been hitting him with Tombstone Piledrivers left and right.
