I was the video recording engineer for this concert at the Atlanta Civic Center in 1977. After the show, Linda and her band knocked on the door (!) of my little tape truck and asked if they could watch the tape, so they and I sat together and watched the show. Linda is so unassuming and such a beautiful person. I remember talking to Don Grolnick, the piano player, who played the show with a broken hand. It was a great show, and a great memory for me, but I never thought this recording would live on 40+ years later.

If I had to name the single most memorable note I've ever heard in any pop song, it would be the final note that Linda Ronstadt hits in "Blue Bayou." To this day, I can still recall my reaction to hearing it for the first time. The 4th, 3rd and 2nd notes from the end, slowly moving up the musical scale, create a huge expectation in the listener for what the final note would be. And then? Wow! Ronstadt delivers and sustains an F#5 in magnificent vocal tone! Bravo!

I think of her often too. I lived in Tucson for 20 years, and Linda is a Tucson homegirl. The main city bus depot in DT Tucson is named "Ronstadt Center." Not because of Linda, but her dad. Her brother used to be on the city council, don't know if he still is, I left Tucson 4 years ago. Linda is altruistic, donating to Casa De Los Ninos, a home for children in Tucson who need help. She also donated to restore the Rialto in DT Tucson. Linda still rocks even if she most unfortunately can't sing anymore. :(

Gorgeous in ways us mere mortals can only dream about. There is something about the warmth, purity and sadness in her voice that just takes you in. Even when she belts the natural beauty of her sound is sustained. Her critics, there have been a few who stalked her like spurned lovers, have been proven to be fools and her devoted admirers have been vindicated. Perhaps the finest female vocalist of the rock and roll era. An intriguing and elusive superstar. Wishing her peace and joy.

+mannythanx Amen! She's one of the very few who can handle both sensitive, delicate lines and big, torch-singer lines. To my mind, only Karen Carpenter challenges Linda. Karen had a different kind of brilliance: more wistful and vulnerable. I can't choose between them.

+Daniel Gunter Ronstadt's repertoire, voice and legacy is broad and in a class of her own. To each their own but Carpenter was a limited cornball crooner. Nothing against her personally and her odd demise but she couldn't shine Linda's boots.
