Thank you SO much for this video - it addressed the EXACT question I had regarding the Helix's outputs. I have a Kemper (and still love it, but it's gotta get shipped out for a repair - footswitches are finally being lame after 3 years) and I have it set up this very same way for the very same reasons you have. I just needed to make sure that if I buy a Helix (to add to my amp tone possibilities, and to have a similar backup rig whenever my Kemper has to get shipped out for God knows how long it'll take to get repaired) I could run the Helix the same way at my gigs. Again, thank you so much for the help! And I subscribed to your channel to get more help and info from you as I move forward on the Helix!

Steve, I got a great method for stabilizing the big volume knob. I play table tennis and I buy my own rubbers and glue them to the paddle. There's always left over rubber after cutting the it to the shape needed for the paddle. I cut a circle the size of the knob and glued it to the bottom of the knob. You can still turn it, but you have to use a LOT of pressure. No way that thing is moving unless I want it to!

Thanks mucho - Sometimes directions from the engineers are not that great because everything to them is simple. It takes people like you (with real world experience) to relate basic ideas to us commoners that they skip. I heard there was a way to turn off the 'big volume knob". Not well explained in the manual. I see now that you can't turn it off, you can only change what that knob will control. I actually like the idea better that it will control the out to my amp (1/4 inch) but not the out to the board. Just what I needed, thanks again for being on our side.

I've been using link cable into my powercab and then the out on the powercab to FOH. I guess it's kind of the same thing because the powercab volume doesn't effect the signal to FOH and is has a virtual 57 mic in the output. I just worry that when I don't have my powercab one day, I won't know how to set the Helix for FOH. I should probably use this method and get used to it. Powercab does make it easy. After about 8 months with the Helix, I'm struggling with some of the tones live. I miss a the feel of my amp sometimes.

Hey Rami! I would suggest making your presets at least close to a fully bypassed volume. It will almost always be boosted up but if you are in the ballpark, you'll never have issues. To answer your question, you have a volume in your global eq that you can page to and bring up or down 20db

@SteveSterlacci4 жыл бұрын
I always advise to avoid controlling the volume to FOH. Have it set to Mic level and leave it alone. If you are sending too hot of a signal, channel volume is your friend. If you are on a gig and need a last minute fix, you can also go to global settings and bring down the volume there

I am not totally sure of the question here but I think you are asking if you can go to a power amp on stage? I would use an FX send set to instrument level. Steve, signal Q: I set up my Helix going into my Powercab 112+ so that my Powercab light is yellow. Then on the Jarvis setting my signal is even at -13.00dB. Then I use the output on the PC to go to the board. The sound guy at the board constantly says my signal is too hot. Any tip for getting my sound balanced?
@SteveSterlacci3 жыл бұрын
Your output from the PC is probably set to Line, change that to be Mic level and you should be golden. Line level to the PC, mic level to a board
@GiantSFaithfuL3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveSterlacci ok, I found that. It was on mic. The Helix is Line. Maybe my sound guy is just a pain!
@SteveSterlacci3 жыл бұрын
@@GiantSFaithfuL that could be! Lol cheaper sound boards wont have as flexible inputs. Or he could have an instrument/line issue on his end. I would just lower the speaker model volume i guess. Hey buddy. I know you have a flood of comments. I’m a new helix user. And I’ve been looking at different resources on this. Some people say use “instrument” for your 1/4” out put. And “line” from your XLR to front of house, studio monitors, and so on. My guitar tech said he uses the reverse. “Line” for his 1/4” and “instrument” as “XLR” outputs. My helix was set “instrument” for 1/4” and “line” to XLR and I thought sounded fine. So, Is this one of those things that’s like “whatever sounds best to you” type of things? Sorry for the long comment!
@SteveSterlacci Жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, yes. Whatever works best for your set up. My thought is to match things up. Something that expects line level like a monitor or floor wedge should get one. Instrument outs to where an instrument would be plugged in. FOH, always mic level for the same reasons

If the big knob only affects 1/4 inch outs, then how do know how much signal is going to Front of House?
@SteveSterlacci3 жыл бұрын
I am sending him a mic level signal. Its in his hands to handle the gain structure. Just like a real amp when they tell you "dont touch your volume, its perfect!" I get to do that, and increase stage volume if needed. Let the sound man do his job with the FOH signal

@@SteveSterlacci So it's like a set db amount like a microphone? Im talking about how many db does it send to the house if you make the big knob only effect your 1/4 in outs on stage.

Its dependent on the presets level. I keep all mine relatively the same level and its 99.9% of the time a great level for the sound guys

@@shellsjoint you talking about the HX stomp output? Either way it's the same I think. Mic and instrument are the lower output signals. I think they sound better unless it needs to drive a speaker like the Powercab or other FRFR speakers that need the juice
@SteveSterlacci5 жыл бұрын
@@davidforbes72 exactly. I found that the return of the fx loops in fender amps didnt make too big of a difference. Either way, I control that from my big volume knob so it's better to have the head room of the Line out (for me). All subjective to our own scenarios!
@bluesky21453 жыл бұрын
That's a flawed rule. You're better off sending a line level over the XLR to the house PA because it will travel further with less signal loss and better signal-to-noise ratio
@SteveSterlacci3 жыл бұрын
Its not a rule, and its not flawed. It's how the unit was designed to be used. Line level is too hot for some older mixers. In most cases, it shouldn't be a problem. But that is how the units made to be used. I have never experienced nor heard of anyone else experiencing any signal loss or s/n issues with the mic level
@bluesky21453 жыл бұрын
@@SteveSterlacci You're fine I'm sure but as a rule the higher signal to noise ratio the better. I would be sending line from here but yeah the mixer needs to be able to take pro levels. Rock on Steve !

If you set the large volume knob to "digital", does it control the volume coming out of the L6 link to the Powercab ?

I would assume yes. I have not personally tried it but I'll be damned if it that didnt make perfect sense ! I'll look into that as well. Let me know if you try it!

I looked on the back of my Helix and it does say "Digital" above the L6 Link so I'm guessing Yes. My Powercab 212 plus is ordered and on the way. That would be great if it is that way because then I could control Volume of the Powercab without going around the back of the cab when it's leaned back.
@odersfelt48075 жыл бұрын
It does. I have it set to Digital and use PC+ as stage monitor via L6 Link and send XLR to FOH set to MIC. Vol knob only affects volume of the PC.
