I love my Stomp XL. The Stomp is too limited in switches (for me), while the Helixes and similar full size floor units are too big for my needs. The XL is "just right" in terms of size and utility..

John, your the best. as a new stomp XL owner i was looking for the fast track to getting my new stomp ready for a audition gig in just a week. your video's teached me everything i needed for tweaking on the spot. I ended up using your amazing presets at the audition and blew away the other guitar player. thank you so much. i never had to pay big money for presets or IR's because of you. subscriber for life.

The Stomp XL is the perfect form factor for those wanting to use it as an all-in-one solution. Where as the original HX Stomp is more of the “Swiss Army knife” pedal that could go at the end of your existing pedal board and fill whatever role you need it to.

I probably would’ve gone for the XL if it existed when I bought my stomp and if it had more DSP I probably would’ve upgraded. What I did instead was get a Blackstar Live Logic controller which works brilliantly with the stomp and has a very easy editor. I had it setup in like an hour and a half. I use the three switches on the stomp to turn effects on and off and the live logic is set up with the first three switches select the snapshots, the fourth switch is tuner on and off and the last two switches are preset up and down.

+1 for the XL. I wanted to build a board around a stomp with some of pedals that I just like using. The XL was much better option for me..not only for the extra switches but also the placement of all the i/o s which are on the top edge of the unit. Seemed to me that a fully cabled up stomp with cables coming in from the left, the right and the top that takes up nearly as much footprint as the XL

I think for gigging, the XL looks like a more practical unit. I was primarily looking for a desktop solution, so the HX Stomp was a better choice for me. I made a 2-button switch for FS4 and FS5, which I use for changing Snapshots up/down. I've thought seriously about adding a MIDI floor controller many times. Scott Uhl and Alex Price both have excellent information on their Channels about using MIDI Controllers with the HX Stomp. Every time I think about getting a MIDI Controller for my Stomp, I discover that there is solution within the unit that doesn't require additional gear. The expanded power in the recent Update for the Command Center makes the need for additional gear even less likely. I just have to really think and plan out what would be the best way to take advantage of its features. 🤔 I have a dedicated Looper pedal (Digitech JamMan Stereo), and it contributes significantly to how I use my HX Stomp.

I upgraded from an HX Effects to a Stomp XL because it provided the same number of footswitches in a more compact format while giving me the amp models and cabs that the HX Effects lacked. On the subject of MIDI controllers, the XL also works better as a MIDI controller on its own vs. the regular Stomp to control other things on a board because of the additional switches. I have mine paired with a Bluguitar Amp1 Iridium in 4 Cable Method. Each of my presets contain snapshots with MIDI PC and CC commands that change various parameters on the Amp1: channel, gain, boost, secondary master volume, etc. The Stomp XL also allows me to put HX amp models in the loop of the Amp1 for an even larger sonic palette. It's an incredibly flexible rig!

Used to have a morningstar m6 midi controller and an hx stomp and it worked great. Pretty simple to program for me, and I used it for preset switching, tap tempo/tuner and extra snapshots when the hx stomp itself is in snapshot mode. Worked well, but I realized the amount of space those two things on a pedalboard took up was almost the same as a helix floor. So I sold both and have been very satisfied with the helix. The hx stomp XL probably would've been what I got instead had it come out earlier though.

I bought the Stomp a couple of months before the XL came out. I was always fantasizing about MIDI controllers and so on, but they cost way too much and would require a power supply. After a long time of being slightly frustrated, I bought the XL. Las week I sold the original Stomp. The XL is not only better (for me) for gigging, but even more important for messing aroung at home. With the Stomp I couldn't have a dedicated footswitch for some fun effect I rarely use (octave, phaser), which prevented me from having fun with it. One thing I really wish Line6 would allow me to do is remap the tap tempo footawitch to snapshot up. I never use tap tempo and currently got an external FS for snap up.

I have an hx stomp w/ a Morningstar mc6 mkii. I only programmed 2 banks on the mc6 and should make a 3rd. It didn't take long and opted for that rather than the XL. With the XL you lose 1 button =( and gain an extra snapshot which is great =). But the 2 main reasons I use HXS with the mc6 ii is as follows: 1. I get a 3 expression pedals 2 via the mc6 and it's more reliable with volume pedals as exp. The 3rd is via the HXS or if I need FS4+5 via boss fs7 dual FS. 2. I then have a fully modular setup with the small sized HXS With the mc6 I have only 2 banks - it was really easy to setup 1. Fx01 on/off x6 all set from 0-127(min-max). MIDI CC 11-16. It's a cut and paste job changing only the display and the cc number. then the stomp does the rest, assigning as a regular footswitchs (FS) and control min-max values in the stomp and it works just like assigning to a helix/stomp fs. I usually press the learn button to assign - faster that way. I remember what's what by assigning FX in the order they appear block 1 is fx01 on the midi etc. 2. The second bank accessible to by a double fs press on mc6 is for modes view. Snapshot/stomp/tuner/preset scroll etc. I should set one up for the 6 button Looper but I prefer my boss RC 500 or 300 so I haven't bothered yet but in a pinch if needed I should set one up. I power the mc6 from the HXS powersupply with a simple DC Y splitter so it's not complicated and use a right angled flat midi cable. I don't have the extra snapshot and have to plug in 1 more thing, but by programming 2 banks, one of which is a a copy paste job for the 6 FXs and a change of MIDI number ( very quick) and the mode view change which i rarely use but took 10 min, I can use these 2 for all presets on the HXS. The actual snapshots are on the stomp and the mc6 just switches the view of the HXS buttons. I get 2 expressions or 3 and an extra FS button mc6's 6 +2 on the HXS +2 on the expression/ctrl if I need, in place of 1 snapshot. It's much more flexible esp if i decide to outboard some things. If the unit you tried was the mc6 mkii I could send you the 2 mc6 bank presets.

If the XL had two Expression Pedal inputs, I would jump ship on saving up for the BOSS GX-100 in a heartbeat. In my old GP-100 rack setup with the Behringer FCB1010, I used one pedal for volume at all times and the other for FX wet / dry mix, and for bringing delay ducking on at a certain range etc. And I used that second function ALL the time, helped me sit perfectly in the mix based on the density of the rest of the band's playing for a given tune, or even in quiet sections of the same tune..

Amazing playing- as always. Very nice pedal but it's no FM9. If one could grab it for under $500 US, it would be a great value. Tiny screen and some other limitations but overall, it is easily one of the best for the price and it's JNC approved! Truth be told though, I'm sure you prefer the Fractal with regards to tone (not price.) I would even take a FM3 over this but the extra buttons are nice. FM9 solved the lack of buttons issue. Still on the wait list 1 year later. 😥

I can see the argument for the XL over the normal stomp for gigging. I’ve got the normal stomp but 4 other devices that are all midi operated too so am going to be going the route of a hotone ampero control. Should give me 8 footswitches once adding extra ones so lots of options 😊 I don’t gig anymore btw but like the extra control that it gives over everything and handy when recording 👍

That is why I still like my Boss ME-80. you just turn off the amp simulator, and you have tons of dials to play adjust. It's like a pedalboard. It is cheap enough that if it gets stolen at a gig then you wouldn't freak out like you would if they stole your strymon volante and other expensive pedals.

@johnnathancordy Watching the video right now, still at the beginning... HX Stomp and a MIDI Controller eh? Sounds familiar... :-) I am telling you, you might make me a Roland / Boss GP/GX to Line6 HX convert before next Christmas after all.... Annd, after watching further along, a see that the idea of a midi foot controller and an HX Stomp was an actual tried and rejected time sink for you.... Roller coaster.. I was this close to being back to thinking, "my old FCB1010 foot controller and an HX Stomp" instead of the BOSS GX-100 after all But your advice is just about the best informed there is on this kind of deep, gear-nerd AND practical subject. I am so glad to see this video actually addressing this very idea. The HX Stomp costs about the same as the GX-100, and has so much more depth and options and complexity which the recording engineer part of me LOVES. But yeah, only three footswitches and no expression pedal built in, and limited connections for such... So the though was: I would get the HX Stomp, for the price of a The BOSS GX-100, and make use of the Behringer FCB1010 (with it's 10 footswitches and two expression pedals) which I already own from my old Roland GP-100 rack rig, and BAM! easy peasy! best of all worlds and now I can be cool and use John Cordy's best patches! However, the question marks in my mind would be whether it would be worth it to go down that rabbit hole at the end of all of it. Using a separate pedal controller, that, as you say needs its own power... AND said controller does not talk bidirectionally with the HX over MIDI, just sends dumb Midi program change and CC messages.. With the fluency you have with, -- and your willingness to read the manual for, -- multiple manufacturer's modelers: to learn them, make patches with them, and make MUSIC with them.. I trust solidly that it is a fool's errand to try the FCB1010 / HX approach (Which a little birdy told me recently anyway, don't know why I would question him) I am already versed in the Roland GP-100 and its descendants seem to follow the same workflow, so that indeed is where I am still leaning for bonus time next year.. I was always able to get what I wanted out of my Roland GP100 for each of the working tones I needed when gigging, for multiple genres, and I could make it sound great, It is definitely a Roland / BOSS methodology and with peculiar limitations and less choices, less real amps being duplicated, etc, but there are unique features they have that other manufacturers don't, This is great great content, man. Thanks for YET AGAIN turning question marks into full stops. Yes, and I realize that the point of this video is not at all what I gleaned from it; for you, you rediscovered the HX XL as a gigging middle ground because of the extra switches it provides, while still fitting into your comfort zone, and your workflow. For me, It helped me decide to go with what I know with just the right set of features for what I need. Oh, and how in the hell do you manage to put out so much USEFUL quality usable material like twice a day??? It's literally insane.. Remembering to click "Like" on each of the videos you release, because... I am NOT lying when I do so... Love the video, love the details, but most of all love your playing and your tone.

Ok I’d agree the XL is a better all in one box solution, but a wireless midi controller would be the way to go for day to day stuff so you can actually work on the stomp at desk or amp height and tap when and where you need. Add a tablet and you’ve all you need for a gig.

Once you have your loop recorded you can reset the tempo for time based FXs by tapping along with your recorded loop tempo which only adjusts your FX tempo not your loop recording… i.e., your looper and tap tempo are not related.

doesn't it only come on the flagship Helix / Helix Rack?typically, leaving out proprietary features like that is less about cost savings / target sale price and more to push people up the product stack. it's also important to have features that are distinct between the models. it's pretty clear at a glance that the Helix LT doesn't have the "scribble strip" screens and is made out of slightly different materials. aside from I/O for specific use cases (XLR / mic preamp and Variax, as you mentioned), it's near identical. the Stomp XL is a good example of "basically the same, but reworked according to customer feedback." the opposite example of a well defined product stack would be something like the current Apple iPad lineup. they've been cannibalizing their own product stack and making it extremely confusing as to which model is "best" for a specific use case. there are many overlapping price points and "almost the same" features that are carefully chosen to bump people up to the next price tier, which is why there's very little difference between their mid priced stuff. it's a complete mess. I keep hoping Line 6 will refresh the entire hardware lineup, if only to cram more processing power into similar (smaller?) boxes and merge the UI with some modern conveniences, like a touchscreen (while keeping the hardware menu functionality exactly the same). would be nice to have newer processors that are hopefully more powerful and less expensive, but their hands may be tied, depending on how specialized the processors used are.

The only thing that the Stomp XL doesn't have over something like a Morningstar midi controller is the MIDI waveform/LFO feature. It would be really cool if LIne6 incorporated that into Helix, but I realize it's a fairly niche and nerdy thing that most people probably don't care about.

@@tappistrt Not quite. Command Center does not have multi-message stacks per pedal/instant (16 messages per switch and bank on an MC6), multiple pages per preset (like an MC6), nor does it have robust handling of multiple types of footswitch actions (i.e. press, release, double press, hold, etc. like an MC6); and Stomp XL only has one set of MIDI jacks (not including USB, which the MC6 also has). The XL is fantastic when using it mainly for controlling the onboard blocks or a handful of pedals (especially if you are only changing presets on them via global PC), but, depending on your needs, it can quickly get limited when used with complex external pedals. I always encourage people to try Command Center before buying an external controller, especially if they have an XL, but it is NOT a complete MIDI solution for complex rigs.
