i've read a comment somehere (if i can find it) that the leading 37 had an engine/timing fault that was known about (hence the fitter present, leaning out the cab window). the upshot was they discovered that although clagging badly, the engine was pumping out 2000hp+ in the process. relevant adjustment was undertaken and all was well. btw iron ore and MGR trains to Ravenscraig were 2x37 with another 37 (or occasionally a 26) added on the front at Mossend for the climb through Holytown

Totally splendid vid that! Yeah i'd say that 37145 (formerly 37313) was probably getting rinsed as it was overdue overhaul, which it received in September 1990 at Springburn Major Depot and repainted into Railfreight Metals, being the last 37/0 to retain all-over BR blue with large numbers. . .Crewe Works last gave a classified repair to a mainline loco at end of '87 i believe and Laira level 5 depot was just ending its programme of 37 overhauls in summer '90, with most CEM's carried out at Doncaster. As for the freight service, i wouldn't be surprised if its one of the in-frequent Hunterston to either Healey Mills or Scunthorpe imported coal via WCML, just before they trialled 56's on ECML anglo-scottish MGR's in July '90. . And yeah, i've just checked, the only scottish locos with slow speed control for MGR in June '90 were 26001-7 and 37693/4 surprisingly or not. Rite gona watch that again :)

No,, you have someone who appreciated the reality of railways. For all we know this locomotive is headed for Works for overhaul. The loco is in small logo blue so unlikely to have been repainted after 1980 when the Large Logo blue on the 2nd loco became the standard paint scheme. The third loco is ex works in Raifrieght triple grey so post 1988. Due for overhaul and may well be working towards there. Trust me, that is one very sick locomotive. Typical overhaul periods were about 5 years but could be extended depending on oil consumption which was (and is) monitored precisely unlike fuel consumption. Tell ya, it sounds in pain! Not something I do like to see, mainly because there is summat very wrong. There should be a brief black cloud on opening the throttle, that's turbo lag for ya, but watch the two other locos. Brief plume then they settle down to the typical clean exhaust of an EE Loco. Search around for classes 24, 25, 26, 27, 44, 45 or 47 and you'll see that Sulzer engines are smoky. High speed engines such as Paxman or Maybachs make a lovely noise but ooooh, the smoke! And as for Deltics? They chuck out more fuel than they burn! However, Mr Drax, I reiterate my previous comment. If you do not like watching railway videos, go watch summat else. I do not like football but leave the footy nerds alone. Why? Can't be bothered. I never did like trolls, especially ones who clearly know nothing about the subject they are trolling. Now sod off.
@nottudyug7 жыл бұрын
Nigel. Interesting comments. Im not a Train nerd as the other chap labelled you as which i thought was very rude. However i have a serious question having always had an interest in diesel locos in particular the English Electric loco's from the 60s (incidentally the 37s still used on various parts of the UK network is testament to their awesome longevity & reliability now they're 50+ years old!!) HOWEVER i digress.....and based on your passed experiences as a fitter i have this question. Why would the train crew decide to make this the lead loco seen as its the one with the quite obvious problem? Wouldn't it be possible that this loco could 'idle' in tandem with the other pair whilst they are carrying out all the work load and be coupled behind the lead loco/s? Presumably the vacuum brake system would have no issue functioning as the idling loco would be coupled up and effectively become just another part of the train ??
@nigelterry92997 жыл бұрын
I suspect that the load is for 2 37s and the lead engine is on it way to Crewe for overhaul. The facilities at sheds are limited so, once we've got past an injector change and checked the wastegates for correct operation, the shed fitter's investigation ends. However, during the run down of class 40 and 25 for example we would have locos with good engines whose governor had been invaded by gremlins. We were not supposed to change the governor but, seeing as the easiest way to get to the wastegate was to remove the engine room roof, access to the governor was dead easy and, if we had one in the scrap line with a decent engine, we'd swap the governor over. Works would adjust a governor but not change them in the last days!!
@nigelterry92997 жыл бұрын
It could well have been coupled inside the rear two but then I don't know the destination of this train. It may have been easier to couple the faulty loco up front so it can be detached en route if it is headed to a destination beyond the planned repair shop. This may well explain the travelling fitter who may well have need to enter the engine room before destination is reached. It'll be like the Black Hole of Calcutta in there!
@paulrob865 жыл бұрын
The front loco I would suspect has worn injectors which is allowing too much fuel to enter the engine. I would also think it is running at 100% load where the other two are not.

They were pulling, all of these locos are 'jumpered up', IE the driver of the first loco has control of all of them. The smoke is because the lead engine hasn't been maintained regularly, or recieved the same amount of attention as others.

Here is another inconvenient fact. Those wagons are HAA hoppers, built for Merry Go Round trains. To load and unload these trains requires slow speed control fitted which none of those locos have. The wagons are loaded so presumably on their way to a power station except that with those locos, unloading is not possible. So we are watching a staging move, from colliery or port to an intermediate marshalling yard. A suitably equipped loco then takes the train to its final destination. Is the train going north or south? I don't know, I know not the area. If it is going south, is this a regular working used to bring locos for overhaul to Crewe Works? Or has the fault developed en route? I once saw a class 46 go from being hale and hearty to a smoky, misfiring wreck in 7 miles. I was on the train, 1st window. It was taken to Healey Mills Shed which was equipped to do most running repairs. New injectors and pumps made no difference so the loco was withdrawn from service because the class had been declared none standard. There are so many imponderables here that judgements cannot be made. No go and play, Trolls, my fault, I should know not to try to educate the uneducable........
@ayrstream14316 жыл бұрын
The train is loaded with coal and originated from Hunterston High Level ore terminal in Ayrshire, it is heading for Ravenscraig steelworks. The loco's will be removed from the train at Ravenscraig and a beetle device pulled the wagons through the unloading point. This was also how the train was loaded at Hunterston.
