You remind me of Clara from Great Depression Cooking. I loved her and miss her. Another is Phyllis Stokes who just passed a couple of months ago. I miss her too. Her son is carrying on her channel and reminiscing as he goes through her house and sorts things out. Very sweet❤️. He gives all proceeds to a church school Phyllis supported. Her channel was called Southern Frugal.

I admit not a fancy meal but it was not meant to be this was meant to be a good meal for when money was tight and times are hard. The nutrition could be boosted with some fresh or canned fruit and a salad on the side if you were fortunate enough to have such a thing. As a person who was food insecure for 10 years before getting my first full time union job I sympathize with the struggles people had in the depression. When that church lady comes by with a few boxes of pasta and cans of stuff when the government aid of $30 for the month's groceries for a single person runs out you are grateful. Fortunately by the Grace of God I can now take care of myself and I donate when I can to the food pantry and I encourage you to do the same.
@GrandmaFeral4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear about your hardship but glad it was better for you when you had gotten your full time job. I was brought up by parents who taught me to always help the less fortunate which goes back to them living through the depression. One of my Aunts would tell me she was so hungry during the depression that one day she found a piece of molded bread on the street and ate it and never forgot that. She was so generous and helped so many people because of that one experience👩

Another cracking recipe - thank you Grandma Feral! As it happens, I'm vegan, but its cool because I can substitute with vegan butter and jackfruit instead of tuna. The garlic, onions and parsley are full of healing nutrients along with protein in the tuna (or jackfruit) and correct me if I'm wrong, but that brand of pasta you use is fortified with vitamins. A simple yet nutritious meal. I'd have this over processed food/take out every time! Less is definitely more! Stay safe and thank you for sharing your family's wisdom xxx

Perhaps things will go well for our economy but in case it doesn’t, I’m taking down recipes like this for my large family of 9. We can get through hard times if we’re wise & careful. I’ve been watching documentaries about the Spanish Flu pandemic & the Great Depression. One of the saddest things in America is that we don’t know our past. And because of this, we aren’t learning from it. I appreciate these recipes. Thank you very much. This is a great resource.

Looks good. This is the perfect time to be posting such recipes, with all that's going on. People are staying at home and eating out less to save money. People are being furloughed, and they need to save as much money as they can. I am going to try this recipe tomorrow night, for sure. I can't have wheat - so I will have to use rice-based gluten free noodles instead. I'm sure it will be just as good. I may replace the tuna with sardines in olive oil - so I won't need to add the olive oil. Plus the olive oil in the sardine is infused with the fishiness of the sardines; so it will disperse the sardine flavor throughout the noodles. Looking forward to try this!

Mmmmmm Looks really good. Just needs a little bit of parmesan cheese. Though I would have to grate or mince the onion for my son as he doesn't like big pieces of onion in his food. That Tuna looks really pale though compared to what we get here in Australia. I'm going to have to try to make this for my Son&I. Though may just make a smaller lot as there is only the 2 of us. My Boyfriend does not like Tuna.

Hello Grandma Feral! I am a new subscriber and love the simple dishes you show in your videos. Now here is a rather embarrassing question, but how do you cut your noodles? I sometimes break them while they are still in the package (the ones I usually buy do not come in a paper carton), otherwise it would be a big mess. I just can not imagine to cut dry noodles as precisely as I have seen in this video without them flying all over the kitchen. So, how do you do it?
@GrandmaFeral4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for subscribing. I just took the pasta out of the box and took quite a few at a time and broke them in half with my hands. I have been doing this for years. You can break them in small amounts right into your pot of water.👩
