I'm a web dev (mostly back end) and android dev and recently I've been looking for replacements for my MacBook pro and my company gave me the pixel book go and man. It's been really really really nice. Having Linux available and all of chrome and Google syncing has been a HUGE plus. Typically when I'm not at my desk I just plug my s10 in to a work station and use DeX but the pixel book is surprisingly really really really nice. I don't think it's powerful enough to do my android development but I now understand why there's an i7 Chromebook. Definitely not ever gonna be a mainstream os, mostly cause people don't want to acknowledge they only use chrome for 99% of what they do...and the other 1% is either iMessage or Microsoft Outlook lol...but with the touchscreen and not needing to click and drag with a mouse...even the android apps perform a lot better. I saw a video of a guy using on of those controller mapping apps to map the keyboard commands to android apps and it's a game changer. I finally understand Chromebooks. And I finally understand the high end ones with i7 and 16gigs of ram.

It helps a lot that online classes center around the Google suit and everyone just needs something to run Chrome browser. With that, the low price point of Good Chromebooks like the C330 help a lot plus long battery life. But if anyone buys those 1000$ Chromebooks for "Online classes, work from home" then they should stay away from the finances. Anything above 300$ is diminishing returns on Chromebooks.

Linus, I believe you can quickly switch between two signed-in profiles on ChromeOS with Alt + Ctrl + > or Alt + Ctrl + < This works as long as you have a "fresh" session active on both profiles. "What exactly is it running?" A Linux kernel, some GNU parts that most GNU/Linux distro's offer and some proprietary software. So basically, it's a non-free Linux spin-off, just like Android. Can you run Windows software? Yes, you can run anything, if you're prepared to deal with translators (like wine), emulators, and virtual machines. Also: why is the storage space low? Because Google wants its customers to invest into their ecosystem (google docs, google cloud, etc...). They're trying to do the same thing apple does: build an environment that is incredibly difficult to leave. Just stick to Linux (which is what ChromeOS is based on anyway), and get the hardware you want.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 4 жыл бұрын
Yep agreed, and I personally run Manjaro Budgie Linux on all my systems with good results, but if you need something dirt simple for someone in your life who is not very tech savvy, Neverware's Cloud Ready OS Home Edition aka Chromium OS is free, and can be installed on almost any hardware with a dual core 64bit CPU(yes there is a 32bit ver. but it's not long for this world), and 4GB of RAM, meaning you could slide in a 1TB HDD/SSD so storage space for them would not be an issue

While they are trying to build an eco system, tbf they did gift me 100gb lifetime storage on the cloud when I bought my pixel, and my Chromebook does have games on it, my Chromebook does actually have a 256gb nvme SSD which I assume I could upgrade, I think Google are much more lenient with it, they done mind other brands mixing in, whereas apple only lets their products be in the eco system
@rolmops883
@rolmops883 4 жыл бұрын
@@fewik8567 a mystery that does sound good. Almost too good to be true. The saying in business being: if something sounds good to be true, it generally is. Here's my issues with what you said: * 100GB of cloud storage: Google scans the data you store with them. Check their help pages and carefully read through them. The phrasing is sometimes vague to downright deceptive. The question on what type of scanning/processing is being done is answered along the lines of "Google does not scan data or emails stores on g suite for advertising". That's not an answer to the question, but it looks good to open with "we don't scan data or emails". That sentence is carefully crafted to distracted from the fact that your data and emails are mined, just not directly for advertising. The statement that Google let's other brands mix in holds water only from a consumer point of view. Android phones being forced to use the play store made that clear. Much like Apple did with the music industry (flog your product on our platform, according to our rules), Google is forcing manufacturers to play by their rules as much as possible. Limited storage clearly fits in Google's business plan. 256Gb nvme SSD which you assume you can upgrade: that really depends on the machine itself. Chromebooks are deffo not meant to be upgradable, much like Apple products. Apple used to be fairly easy to upgrade for years. This started changing only over the last couple of years. Chromebooks haven't been around for that long. Give it time, and I expect them to go down the same path. Last thing on the 100GB cloud storage: this seems like something Google might actually loose money on, and they probably do. Just like Amazon looses money on each fire tablet/stick and Kindle they sell. In this day and age, though, 100GB isn't all that much. Your pixel phone backup alone will easily take up half that. Add your Chromebook backup and you're out of space. If you already have 100GB of data stored with a service you're familiar with, and need more space, where are you most likely going to buy that space? Well with Google of course. After all, the integration with your laptop and phone has proven to be seamless (same thing Apple users say). I'd also carefully read what this lifetime storage actually entails. Is it genuinely limitless, or is lifetime based on the lifetime of the machine you bought? Is lifetime like a life sentence is in many countries (not actually life). What conditions are attached to it (terms of service), and will you be able to access your data if Google finds you in violation of the terms? It could be as simple as "finding malicious software on your cloud storage", and getting a malware infection that uploads itself. Who is liable for data theft, and all possible consequences (like identity theft, loss of money, etc...). What if, best case scenario, you manage to store data safely until the day you die. Great, what happens to the pictures, videos, etc... You stored? Can anyone other than you access them? Do they now have to pay for the storage? Do they have to export it, and find another place to store it all? Download it where? There now not-upgradable Chromebooks that simply don't offer the storage capacity needed? I know this is a very pessimistic, grim take on things. However, until a company can guarantee me safe, affordable cloud storage, which answers all these questions in a satisfactory manner, I'll stick to my external drives, and NAS'. A free 100Gb with 1001 unknowns is fairly meaningless when I'm able to get 1001 times that storage capacity for a reasonable price still.

@@rolmops883 I never read terms and conditions or anything, I just do whatever, now you might think I'm dumb, but all I ever do is search on my Chromebook and occasionally play games, I don't mind them getting data from me for ads, that's just me, I don't see why that is so bad for me, I'll be dead in 70 years and then that data is mostly useless, the thing is they force you to do it, otherwise it's too much hassle, I don't want hassle, I never do anything that is illegal, apart from small thing like watching films online, I have nothing to hide, and my life is easier, and that's all I want, when technology becomes a pain, it is always a real pain, all I want is ease, I like how when I want a new phone I can just get a new one and in 30 minutes I've got a everything back The cloud storage is fine, I mean apple only give your 5gb before you have to pay, and I keep most things on my Chromebooks local storage except for photos, passwords and browser data, all of which I dont mind they have, while Google will probably end the same path as apple unless their prices increase like theirs will definitely loose me as a customer, but even with android restricting me, I actually love it, I don't really customize it, I change animation speeds and that's about it, so I'm very happy with how everything goes together, the cloud storage works great and I dont mind Google having my data, apart from social media and phone calls and texts, most of my photos are what I've taken on walks or of my wife and I, and we both love android and how it goes together

The difference is that you don't need to stay on Google's hardware. I'd argue that the nature of chromebooks make it easier to transition to any other OS since you can access your stuff on the cloud from anywhere. They also offer a nice way to get introduced to Linux for people who aren't familiar with it.

I used a $200 Chromebook in college and that was a great option for taking notes because it had a super long battery life and I could throw it in my backpack without having to worry about it being broken or stolen since it's so cheap. I always had a desktop back in my dorm room/apartment though for serious work, Chrome OS is pretty limited beyond browsing the web and taking notes. Now that they have Linux functionality I can see a use case for a cheap one to basically use as a dumb terminal for SSHing into my servers, but again it would have to be pretty cheap. As soon as I'm spending $500+ on a computer, there are better alternatives with Windows that can still get good battery life while also having all the other functionality of Windows. This will only become more true once Windows 10 X for ARM-based processors comes out...

@@buckshot5096 you don't have to technically, if you know someone who has a business key with unlimited uses, you can just activate windows using it. some people share those keys online so you don't have to pay for a free operating system. Now for those who don't have windows registered, its dangerous as key protections are not enabled, and key updates are not able to be downloaded, but you can edit the system registry or whatever through the admin command prompt and disable the message and enable customization, so it will look like a registered copy of windows, but with higher risk to your system to hackers or whoever even with an anti-virus software. its more of a (do at your own risk) thing, not recommended. Now what else you can do is buy a copy of windows, keep the key on hand, doesn't matter what windows it is, windows 7 can be upgraded to 10 for free, same with 8, vista and XP, so cheaper keys for the same purpose, but if you ever upgraded your PC, like new motherboard and hard drive, you can use that key to activate windows on the new system, but you may need to disable the windows it is active on before hand, or create a virtual machine, which is basically 2 PC's on 1, and you can hook up a new PC to the second one maybe, I am not really familiar with that method.

Windows for ARM really isn't mature enough (yet) to be useful on a chromebook, but linux has some serious potential, with ARM branches of debian being in developpement for quite some time now. It's probably just down to google not allowing you to install a third party OS on their brick like apple does. as of right now the only two OS'es I would consider ARM ready are linux, or at least debian, and macOS, why bother making your own crappy OS when linux is already available and able to do everything you need, it's not even like google doesn't want to use linux, they have customized linux to make android.

I actually use a Chromebook Pixel 2 as my main on the go laptop. It is limited with what you can do but basically all I do on the go is watch YT and locally stored videos anyway. Plus the build is just so damn beautiful, it is by far the most beautiful piece of hardware I own.
