These videos are always such good wake-up calls. I’m IN THE MIDDLE of a long recovery ride while watching this. All easy, low intensity stuff. And I was planning on going low-carb/low-calories since I “didn’t need it,” JUST as Lionel started talking about the necessity of calories and the futility of low-carb fueling. Boom. Calories in. Yessir😬

In the podcast of Kristian and Gustav's coach he also said that they're aiming for more carbs, even during training for the exact same reasons Lionel is explaining here!

Ridiculous injury but at least not ur own fault like the one where you had the zero mile an hour bike crash/pelvis (?) fracture, so marginally less annoying 😢 Calcium supplements: calcium is literally burned in energy production, do more, need more. I got fed up with stress fractures so always dose. The one time you don't, like off season, that's when you'll SF. LCB said the same thing with her foot (?). Supp. Lucky it was just a rib!

6:30- interesting discussion about fueling for athletes. I wonder if the science is really some sort of concensus: ie. ‘eat clean’ - a balanced diet for what a ‘normal’ person of a given weight would need for healthy living (using a round number of say 2500 calories as an example for an ‘average’ adult male) but then ‘fuel in’ by as dense as possible additional calories as required for that multiple hours per day of exercise that athletes need to stay on top of it, regardless of the source (ie. energy drinks, gels, fast foods, other highly processed carbohydrate sources).

Lionel's comments about "eating clean" and the difficulty of reaching total energy intake are on point. This is a common misconception, especially for elite athletes like Lionel. It is highly likely that "low energy availability" (LEA) is the underlying central factor of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). The rib stress fracture (assuming that other pathology is excluded) is a clinical symptom of REDs. "Eating clean" is a misnomer for elite athletes. Eating vegetables, fruits, whole foods etc should be included in everyone's daily nutrition. For someone like Lionel, layering in other sources of calorically dense foods and fluids will be required to meet his high-calorie needs. He nails it by saying he requires other food options to do it. Unfortunately, he is likely still under-fuelling his days and weeks in relation to his training load. As a result, the stress fracture occurred. I hope this helps. Talbot had some great questions and suggestions :)

Just curious how much time Lionel cycles inside vs outside. I dislike going outside for safety reasons but always find it hard to make the transition back to outside since inside is just so much different.

Lionel if you need 8000 calories per day, you cant be eating a massive amount of vegetables. If you listen to Mika Noodt who has 11,000 calories, he doesn't eat many vegetables. Also Brett Robinson (Australian Marathon record holder) says he can't have high fibre because you just can't get in the calories and you end up feeling too "full" for your sessions. Sure, it's good to get the nutrients from vegetables, but your rib stress fracture is a sure sign of low energy availability. If you're worried about not getting all your vitamins, you can always take a multivitamin. I know Brett Robinson takes Immune C from Pillar Performance. And I'm saying this because I make the same mistakes, so I'm no expert here.
