Hey Lionel, i love the videos documenting you swim progression, especially as a weaker swimmer myself taking tips wherever possible. when I feel the feelings of "burn out" that you mentioned my mental strategy is just to make it to the end of the week at all costs, and then at that point you will reevaluate whether or not you ACTUALLY are burnt out and then make the appropriate adjustments. I am a self-coached collegiate triathlete that has been training 25+ hours per week for the last 30ish weeks, I swim around 33 to 35 thousand yards per week.

All I can say is keep it coming. Keep the videos coming keep the energy coming keep the hair coming. It’s all great. Haha I know I’m going to have my best PR’s this year and these videos will be a part of that for sure.

Another huge benefit of strength training for endurance athletes is "Muscle Economy". A little know term, but defining it makes it obvious: When a strong muscle/body that is capable of lifting/moving heavy weight is tasked with lifting/moving lighter weight, it can do so with less effort over a longer period of time than a weaker muscle/body. On the "outside" this looks kind of like muscle endurance, but physiologically is not the same thing. This could be HUGE for Lionel!

It would be great to see what wetsuit swim practice you are putting in during the build up to Oceanside? You know how different it is in the sea, it would be a shame to see you lose any gains from your dedication over the last few months. Best of luck!🤞

Given that he lives in the middle of the desert, I'm going to guess none. But I don't think he necessarily needs to practice ows.

Very interesting part about burnout and overtraining. I wonder if "just a day off" keeps you from a mental burnout. Because i think it often comes back to the things one think about in his spare time. Sometimes you just need to let go of things to hit your target like hunting with a bow.

I seem to remember that hitch in your running stride getting way less noticable right after you did all that rehab strenght work. I can't remember if you said it changed anything in terms actual running faster or more economical though. Probably not since you seems to not care about getting rid of the hitch, I assume it doesn't really effect anything.

I never understood the “cheat meal”. It reinforces the “good” (reward) vs. “bad” (punishment) with regards to what we eat. If you want McDonald’s…eat McDonald’s. 1 meal out 42 (2 weeks times 3 meals a day)…not including all the snacks between, isn’t going to derail a person.

It's interesting that Lionel never does strength work (statement around 5:00 in this video). After all he looks ripped compared to most triathletes. I know low body fat is part of it. Maybe there some genetics to it, also?
