I am going to share with you a quick quilt you can make in 3 hours. It is a simple pattern and takes 9 fat quarters. It is a good starter quilt with minimal trimming. I turned on the timer and with no distractions, I made this quilt from start to finish in 3 hours. Well, except for the binding (she says in a whisper). I will be adding the binding later. I found this pattern years ago and I actually used it to make my first pieced quilt with binding. I am trying to get some quilts made for either a craft fair or my gift stash (which implies I have one) or for charity. I cannot take credit for this pattern as Darlene Michaud did a video 3 years ago. I will put a link below to the original video (warning there is foul language in her video in a funny way, but just wanted to give you a heads up).
Use this easy pattern to display your favorite large print fabric or just for a quick gift. The finished size is approximately 52" x 58".

AMEN Sister!!! I got so tired of the fabric snobs in our quilting guild that I left them forever!! My quilts are used! I learned to quilt with my grandmother and old clothes . $14.00 a yard fabric is waaaaaaaay out of my price range and ridiculous to pay.

It puts quilting out of reach for a lot of people, particularly those who don't realize fabric from Goodwill is just as good! Our local thrift store has flat sheets for $1 each every day, and also have cheap clothing that can be separated and reused as well.

i shop at wal-mart, thrift stores, garage sales, etc. but i also like Jo Ann's if you watch the sales you can get some really good deals on fabric. and turn that 14.99 a yard into 5.99 a yard or less. Especially on holiday themed patterns.

She said, she would never go to Wal-Mart , yada-yada, But when I asked, her where she found the beautiful fabric, she would say, oh, Wal=Mart..Wait what.. Thanks to both of you. I’ve just come across you by chance. How lovely to find someone who understands we don’t all have unlimited funds but still want to sew. I’ve just made my very first baby quilt and bought fat quarters for £5. I was feeling guilty that it’s not the best quality but equally I don’t have the skills to waste £22 on the better quality ones I saw today. I actually bought a few single quilts covers marked down to $10 but they had at least 4-5 metres of fabric. I’m thinking of making my dogs a quilt with doggie prints and I can use the quilt covers to add to it to make it bigger. They are of Australian bird life so it will work as the dogs love to bark at them on their walks. Thanks for the idea.

Was looking at another of your videos and realized I'd never commented on this one. Saw it two years ago when I was in the midst of making a "bunch" of quilts for Christmas and needed a quick replacement for something else I had planned to make. OMG, this has become my favorite "go to" quickie quilt design!! I'd always seen other quilters talk about the design they make over and over but never had one. Now this is mine! I made that Christmas quilt, then made another one for a raffle (the winner was thrilled with it!), I have another one that I need to finish quilting for a gift, pieced another one this past Spring after seeing a "couldn't pass it up" 9 pc FQ bundle and have fabrics pulled for three more for gifts. Also love how this is a great pattern to learn about choosing fabrics that go together. The video on the same design that Matt @ Scrappy Patch did was a big help in understanding just how the fabrics you choose will "play" in the design. And big ups to Darlene Michaud for inspiring us all! So sorry for the long and long over due comment but just had to pass along my appreciation to you for sharing this!

Walmart fabric quality has improved over the years. And I agree 100% with what she says about budgeting. I know poly cotton blend isn't the preferred fabric either, but the first quilt I made 40 years ago I used what I had. The 100% cotton has totally disintegrated but the poly cotton fabrics are still holding together and holding the color pretty well.

This is how my grandmother and mother would make quilts. When they wanted smaller blocks they would continue doing steps 1 2 and 3 until the blocks where smaller. If they wanted the blocks to be triangular. They would cut the blocks diagonal. Then mix the patterns up and sew.

It's interesting to hear this attitude about Walmart fabric amongst American quilters. From a British perspective, let me tell you, you guys in America are BLESSED by God to even have the option of Walmart fabric! Our supermarkets here do not routinely sell cheapie fabric. Quilting (unless you're recycling) is nearly always an expensive endeavour and quilt/fabric shops are few and far between, even in London. I went on a trip to Florida years ago, and when I saw the fabric in Walmart I thought I'd died and gone to heaven Lol!!

OH! And you gave me the idea for my first charity quilt. The Barbie quilt you did with the panel and Barbie fabrics cut into strips. I took a panel with a bear in the woods that was on clearance. Found 3 coordinating woodsy fabrics to cut into strips and sew around and around till it got big enough then instead of quilting it on my small machine I bought polyfill to make it fluffy and hand tied it. that was also a first and fun.

Love, love, love this idea, you clever lady - so cool!!! 5-pack FQ at Walmart here (western Canada 🇨🇦) is $14 + tax, and premium fabric at the quilt shops run $19/metre to $23/metre. I started out buying $10 scrap bags and made myself some really lovely blocks. Every quilt is made with a ton of love, even if one can’t afford to pay a ton of money. Huge difference in the value of a quilt, and the cost. 😊

I love love love that you’re a fan of Walmart fabric. I buy a ton of fabric there! I don’t have to wait for shipping, and you really can’t beat their prices. I love their fat quarter solids for things like mug rugs. I even bought a bolt of their solid red to use as the backing for some Advent calendars I made. $25 for 8 yards of fabric - can’t beat that! I’ve also used their holiday fabrics for quilts and once they’ve been quilted and washed, I think they’re soft and snuggly.

In reality...as it was my first quilt ever...took me longer that 3 hours for the top and ... as for making it an actual quilt...about a week. I admit though, if it wasn't for not having even sufficient cutting and measuring tools, it would have been a much less time consuming project. But it was a great project to do first as the skills learned just made it all make sense! My second quilt will be so much easier and hopefully come out even better.
