If you notice a similarity in the slide guitar tone of Bonnie Raitt and Lowell George, it's because when she used to sing backup vocals on early L.Feat albums, Lowell George showed her how to daisy chain 2 compressor units to create infinite sustain ( as long as you were moving the slide.) On this album, be sure to check out "Apolitical Blues", with a guest appearance by Mick Taylor on guitar.

The Waiting for Columbus record is probably one of the great live records of all time and definitely Little Feat's best record with better performances than the studio and tremendous live sound for 1977... The drummer Richie Heyward was recruited by every rock act in the 80's because of this record, playing with Robert Plant on his many hits... Actually, Billy Payne, the keyboard player was asked by Zappa to join his group and play along side Lowell George, but they took off and formed Little Feat instead...

For us die-hard Little Feat fans, arguably one of the best RnR bands of all time. Guess you just had to be there...but keep in mind they were the backup band on Robert Palmer's Pressure Drop album, Led Zepplin's "favorite American band", and the funkiest shit to come down the pike since I don't know when. The combination of the two tracks on this album, this one "Fat Man in the Bathtub" and the next, "All that you Dream", played together, combine to represent the most glorious 7 minutes of American rock ever recorded. There's just too much to say about Little Feat, and their founder, the astounding Lowell George (still love you Lowell).

Yes, Lowell George did play for Zappa. There are 2 stories about why he left. One, told by George himself in concerts, is that he got fired because he wrote the song Willin', which refers to drugs, which Zappa was ardently against. Another story is that George wrote Willin' and showed it to Zappa and Zappa said, "Man you're too good to be playing for me, you need to start your own band." Maybe the truth was in the middle.
@mu99ins3 жыл бұрын
Lowell is a great talent. His voice is top shelf. Zappa demanded the most from his band. They had to be sharp to play how he wanted them to play. Pot is a soft core drug, but like the comedian said, you ain't your sharpest. And musicians are famed for smoking pot. It's a temptation during the monotony of hotel rooms. Zappa intended, no doubt, to nip the pot smoking on tour in the bud. Lowell was a great voice, but there were other voices. Zappa's drug of choice was tobacco, which cut him short eventually.

Glad you're doing the Feat ... I'd forgotten you'd covered Feats Don't Fail Me Now. But I still think the best albums are the first two, Dixie Chicken and Sailin' Shoes. This track came originally off Dixie Chicken - you should check out that album's title track, or Two Trains or Fool Yourself. I think the studio productions are better than the live versions, partly because recording live wasn't as advanced then as now (they all sound muddy to me), and because they could work harder on the production in the studio, of course. But just my two cents ...

Little Feat don't really fit into the southern rock genre with that jazzy, synthy, too many other instruments and sounds.... but I'm not stuck on labels.... opening for The Who is cool.
