It's been a bit of a crazy week, with ducks getting into the garden, a bear in a hive, super hot weather and smoky skies. Thankfully, I've learned to roll with the punches better as I've gotten older and can find things to be grateful for, even when life is tough. I hope you enjoy coming along with me today

Spring can be trying to our souls, I always say the Spring winds are from the devil.... I was at the farmers market this morning with a beautiful table of greens and complaining about the lack of rain and not thankful for the blessings of a bountiful harvest in front of me. I think I need to take an inventory of my blessings and what I am thankful for....

A cougar could knock over a hive. But I don't see one being interested in a bee hive. Drip irrigation is low pressure. What about having a settling tank before the filter. IE. A tank that is constantly full with the particulates settling out and the top portion of the water continuing on to the rain fresh filter.

Chelsea, some of those brassica's look like the heart was not removed. Glad to hear you are gonna try leaving them. I have been battling silt and sand in my water for years - those filters I found just do not work. What I would suggest doing is to put two holding tanks, hooked in tandem half way up , so that as the first fills it automatically fills the second. The silt will settle out of both tanks so that you can drain it out. Calculate how much you will need to water so that you can ensure it has a chance to settle during the time you are not watering. Then put a pressure pump prior to the filter that draws out of the upper half only of the two tanks. Don't draw from the bottom half of the tanks. The silt will settle out in a few hours after filling so that the existing filter will help remove the rest. A number of filters will be a pain and cost a pretty penny. The other thing you can add is a burlap sack or towel over the fill opening of the first tank so that it is a first level filter as you fill the tanks and is removable to wash off. Very true that in days of old it would have be harsh, but they also would have just done with out...we are very blessed that we don't have to do that. So glad you are at a point where you can go "oh darn" and move on. I seen on another channel where they used clear square water jugs with a tap on the bottom - they poured milk into the jug, left in the fridge for 24 hours, then without moving, just turn the tap on and pour milk into another jug. The cream stays behind as it is at the top. I thought it was brilliant. You could probably carefully take out of the fridge too. Salad looked delicious! Good video Ma'am!

Back in the 1960s my grandmother had a cream separator that was basically a large metal can. There was a spigot down low and a narrow glass window from top to bottom. She poured the milk in and waited for it to separate. She would turn on the spigot and let the milk go into a large jar or can. She could see through the window and turned off the spigot when the cream got down to it. She then poured the cream into a separate container. No electricity needed.

We have had a few bad air quality days down here in Montana from those wildfires. No fun. We have quite a few bears on this property my son and his wife have had problems with the deer getting in garden and wiping everything out last year. They had to reinforce the fence. They planted an orchard last fall so better fencing and electric fence will be a must to keep deer elk and bears out. My son eventually wants bees but he will have to get the protection in place before he gets them. A few days ago the deer came into my patio and munched on my tomato plants, destroyed two but the rest will make it. I have the most trouble with deer and ground squirrels. Once my garden boxes are ready they will be fenced in. Until then I’ll bring tomatoes into shop at night and cover everything else. I think having another filter, bigger, will work to keep that silt out. You may find a bigger filtration at the source would be more efficient. Especially if you want to eventually have drip irrigation for all of garden.

If you have landscape fabric down then cover it with gravel weed seeds will germinate but their roots can't go through the barrier but the stirrup hoe runs on top of the landscape fabric and pulls up weeds, roots and all without moving your gravel. I had a small hand held one made using a one inch wide saw blade screwed into a wooden handle to use in my raised beds. Best garden tool ever!

We live by a pretty big park reserve and there are bears in the spring in people's yards getting into bird feeders and stuff. In the 13 years I've lived in this house and town there hasn't been anyone attacked or injured at all and only one dog was injured but we are more sure it was injured by a coyote than a bear. I am loving the baby bunnies. ❤❤ I live in the middle of Minnesota and we have been having lots of haze from the fires too. I'm sorry about your crappy day. I'm glad it wasn't a series of bad days and just the one but recovering from those bad days when it takes time can also be depressing. Taking it all in strides. I'm happy you guys are safe right now. I hope the fires can be contained soon so they don't spread more. The wildlife is likely also moving because of that.

Nala is a beautiful farm kitty. Love her colors! And beautiful blondie Skittles! She is a fluffer!! Wow, what a day you had, Chelsea. I sure hope your plants can recover, even if not all of them, maybe some of them will thrive. So lucky on the bees, what a great pup you have in Maple. I'm in the city, and we just re-did the fencing around our entire garden plot (5,000+ sq ft), to keep out our city deer that cruise through the neighborhood. I went out the other morning and had tracks in one of our beds. So... they jumped the fence. Did a look at the garden, and it doesn't appear they ate a thing! How in the world, I am not sure. Have a lovely weekend! :) Our goal this weekend is to get the water line set up for the tomatoes in the high tunnel, get the woodchips into the path and get some hay around the bottoms of them. Then I have seeds to plant, peppers and eggplant to get planted, and some more compost to get put into a few more beds. Been raining here, though, so hubs isn't sure he can get my beds turned over that I need incorporated. We've been working on some hard, compacted soil gradually. Guess we will see, just gotta muster all the energies to get a bunch done! It was great catching up with you! Everything is looking so great!
