Hello! I'm Andy - a semi-professional singer-songwriter from the UK, based in Germany. I'm a solo artist as well as vocalist of a rock band. I also teach English Language at university level.
Due to covid-19 restrictions forcing an online semester on us, I recently held a special online version of my course "The Language of Songwriting." Part of the final project included the option of making a reaction/review video to a song that my students particularly enjoy, discussing what elements of the song(writing) are special to them. I never give out tasks I'm not willing to do myself, so I recorded one of my own (Ghost Love Score by Nightwish, also on my channel).
I put it on KZbin for fun to see whether there was interest in this kind of video, and I was really pleasantly surprised at the positive responses! So I've gone ahead and made some more! The line with "Come, surf the clouds" is particularly special to me, as on one of the few occasions I was able to fly under instrument rules (with an instrument instructor) I was able to do exactly that - surf through the cloudtops with a rare sensation of speed (you don't feel the speed in an aircraft in clear air unless you are very close to something that isn't moving). We spend nearly an hour just playing in the cloudtops, twisting and turning through the gaps like an exhilarating downhill ski run in a canyon, but with none of the danger associated with falling of or hitting the side. The best memory I have of my flying days. Normally under visual flight rules you aren't supposed to get as close to cloud as that. Of course, at Buenos Aires Marco calls out to the audience to ride the shooting star with them (maybe why is is a favourite of so many)! His bass playing may be replaceable, but his voice is unique and will be sorely missed, along with his quirky sense of humour. It is amazing that in Buenos Aires Floor was still recovering from tearing her throat up performing with serious laryngitis and flu in Bogota - I think I can just hear her voice crack slightly once in the whole show. This one was special or her because it was the first time her parents had attended a Nightwish concert including songs written specifically for her voice, and she had to be careful to avoid looking at them because, in her words "It's hard to sing properly with a lump in your throat. It's real, you know, as your throat tightens right up when you get emotional and presses the cartilage in". I knew the reality from experience but only learned the reason when she said that. Just more evidence that she knows her craft so well! And Troy - what can't he play? Nobody knows, and I'm pretty sure that he is capable of rapidly becoming proficient on almost any instrument, although brass might take a bit longer than the others, as it is a whole class that he has never been seen using. If Marco does not return, I suspect he will be Tuomas' new first call in tweaking his music for making demos for the rest of the band, as he is a composer and producer already.
