Great video. I've had several voles in my garage. I do the catch release. If they stay outside in a certain area I will feed them by hand. I have become friends with a few of them over the years. I could go outside and knock on a garden edging and out it would come for some food. Really funny. I could call to them and they show up to get some food. I eventually was able to pet it while it would sit eating. I've also fed short tailed shrews, plenty of chipmunks and birds. Tonight I held one and I was petting it and it was nodding off. It got relaxed. Lots of silly stories, videos and pics. They are a cute critter. 😁

I had a vole get inside my house a few years ago. I saw it run inside when my husband opened the door when he came home from work one cold night. I thought it was a mouse, and I had a small teeter-totter live-catch mousetrap, and I set it up with peanut butter, but the vole's body was so long that it could stretch itself to lick the PB out of the trap. So I got the small HavaHart trap, the same one you're using in this video. (The vole made several attempts to get into food in the house. I trapped the vole, and I took the trap to a place where there are a lot of weeds growing, and let him go there.

I had a huge delivery of bulk mulch delivered for my yard. The soil was awful & a year of a mulch really enriched the soil. Then added a bulk load of top soil the next year. This developed into a serious vole problem because my cat was old & no longer was interested in hunting. Adopted a new cat & was amazed by how many vole offerings were layed on my front stoop. Definitely made a difference in the amount of destruction I saw with my plants. Everything flourished on all the property.

That vole was surprisingly friendly. He could have fled, or he could have bit Shawn, but didn't. Some rodents, such as hamsters, grind their teeth when they want you to go away. But, maybe with voles, teeth grinding means something different. Maybe he was saying, let's be friends?

A few years ago here at my home in California we had what I guess you would call a plague. Voles were so numerous that they didn't have enough to eat. They were chewing off the bark around my trees after they took out most of my greenery. There weren't enough holes in the ground for them to get into so they started invading my home.I could hear them in the walls with their vicious teeth chewing on the wood. They seem to be very similar to mice in that they like peanut butter. So they were fairly easy to trap. The comical thing is that a year or two later we had a another plague. It was grasshoppers. They came through and stripped out the greenery. Since then everything has to return to normal. Just a lot of holes in my lawn.

I just did some googling, and it turns out voles are scientifically classified as being in the family cricetidae. This is the same family of rodents that hamsters belong to. So, it's no coincidence that voles resemble hamsters. They even have a shorter tail. Also, what's interesting is that those other native North American animals that Shawn catches, like deer mice, wood rats, are in the family cricetidae. That means that those deer mice and wood rats are more closely related to hamsters than to Norwegian rats and house mice. Pretty interesting! Oh, and I love hamsters, too!

Very hard bastards to kill. Most poison don't kill them, but I catched many in traps. I even caught a few with my hands that year, with gloves I have to say. One almost bit me through a glove.

As a kid I used to catch voles by waiting for the grass to move in their runs and then quickly cupping my hand over it. Got bitten a few times too but no swelling. The easiest way to catch Bank Voles is a 12" tubular biscuit tin with grain at the bottom leaning up against a dry stone wall or bank. Unlike field mice voles cannot jump out. I used to catch them by the dozen. Much as they chew up my lawn and make holes everywhere I still think they are cute and as you say they don't come in doors. Hate mice, love voles.

I have a small family of voles living in my back porch area. I would consider this "indoors". We don't do any gardening, but we have noticed out bumpy lawn in front. These little guys that live in my porch will come out when they hear me singing. I give them fresh greens, seeds and fresh water. They aren't being too destructive, so we made a decision to let our little friends stay and keep us company. They are so cute 😍

I saw that fanart of you and my heart just melted. Could you put that on a t-shirt? I'd buy it, but only if it had the caption "Give it a little flip"-

I think this is what we found in our house tonight. Seemed to have a longer leaner body and shorter tail than a mouse. We do live right near a wild meadow and there are bird feeders all around our home. Somehow got into our house. It was dark grey and didnt have the big ears of a mouse.

We've caught two voles in our house. Two teeny juveniles caught & released, but momma is still rattling around in our basement ceiling.

My cats catch them often. They even brought one in once. It was a nightmare to catch with no traps.

Have you considered tagging the small animals you release and tracking where you release them to see if any turn up again? I’ve always wondered, how far away do you need to release small animals in order to keep them returning to the point of capture. If you release a mouse 100 yards away in a field, does he think “Ahhhh, where the heck am I!”, before settling down to his new life 100 yards away, or does he think “Ahhhh, where the heck am I! Wait, I know exactly where I am”, before starting the trek home?

Doors: closed Vole: ???? Also, I’d argue that shrews are more dangerous. They’re venomous; I was bitten by one, my thumb and soon while hand swelled up and the pain went right down my arm.
