I was in my parents garage fixing up my car when I heard Tom Petty passed away. I couldn’t finish my car I was in tears. This is awesome seeing how the youth of that generation responded to this music.

It was an awful day. I remember they reported he’d died then retracted it and said he was on life support which made it worse because we all knew he was gone. I had his song Walls cranked on my radio on my drive into work that morning. The words “ part of me you carry, part me is gone” will stay with me forever. I was turned onto his music by my older brother and was 13 the year of Live Aid. Tom was forever my favorite artist. The day he died I remember the countless remembrances he got from performers of all ages and celebrities. He touched so many people with his music and he was such a beautifully humble man and adoring father. We truly lost a legend when he died.

I was there. Age 17, just graduated high school up near Wilkes-Barre. For $35, we had nosebleed seats that we left, and made our way onto the field and ended up about 25 yards from the stage. It was hot as hell that day, and Petty was one of our favorites. I had just bought “Damn the Torpedoes” at the record store. It came out a few years before I learned about rock albums… ha. Such an amazing day, I always look for us in the crowd, but this one doesn’t show our area. What a day. Hard to believe, and so glad I shelled out the $35. To be 17 again…

The very first concert I went to was Tom Petty in 1990. I went with my lovely mum who pushed me and her all the way to the front. It was amazing and I still remember it 32 years later. I've been to many concerts since but unfortunately I never seen Tom again. My mum loved him, sadly she is no longer with us but I'll remember that night forever, I was 15 and it was just amazing, he gave such a great show, he was running around the stage, he had his knee bandaged over his jeans. He seemed like such a lovely man. I watched the travelling wibury's documentary and they all seemed so happy together. I miss you Tom

My mom took me to see Tom Petty too, probably in the early-mid 2000’s. I remember even at the time noticing what a spread of type of people were there. There were other people my mom’s age and older of course, the crowd you’d expect for someone like Tom Petty, but more than that there were just people of all ages. Tom Petty’s music is so accessible listening wise, that it didn’t surprise me to see people my age, younger, my moms age, older, and everywhere in between there, but it just really cements how easy it is to listen to and love Tom Petty’s music

@EvelynBaron
@EvelynBaron 5 ай бұрын
My idiotic sister went to AA meetings with Benmont Tench in LA an undisputed keyboard genius. Love? Not so much he caused a lot of trouble in the band, blamed Tom for Howie's death while he was fucking off somewhere himself and fomented ... rubbish during a rough year with Stan Lynch having a hissy fit because Mike Campbell wanted to take his wife on tour and was not into groupies. I have no time for that kind of back biting. Tom wasn't a patriarch or anything but he was the backbone of the band and shouldered the responsibility. There was no reason to undermine him. Get real.

Yes good info from people. Runnin Down a Dream on Netflix but you can rent on youtube. For fun Storytellers VHS youtube he's hilarious. The making of Wildflowers not so much just me it was posthumous and engineered by Rick Rubin who is a shit in my books and Tom;s older daughter Adria who produces Beyonce and elbowed his widow out of creative control over unpublished material so Dana .... just walked out of the machinery. She was only ever there for love I got a chance to meet her and their dog backstage due to a friend on his last tour unforgettable. Reading: I really liked Conversations with Tom Petty Paul Zollo and the official bio Warren Zane author, which had a huge effect on me this man one of the world's great transcenders his father a monster ... ok let's not get carried away. On-line interviews (I write for a living and that's why I know all this stuff) CBC Q Tom Petty Interview it's cut into 2 parts just after Hypnotic Eye came out a really measured and thoughtful reflection on his part he was a brilliant guy.

I wasn't there, but I totally remember this concert. FACTOID: Unlike how most artists record in the studio using various takes, tracks parts and weave them all together, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers recorded most all of their songs in one take with all the band members playing at once. "Refugee" took something like over 100 takes but the song you hear on the album was recorded live in the studio in a single take!

his band was tight as fuck.. And you have to put him right there with the performers, considered 'rock royalty'. He just got it...he figured out how to stick around thru different musical shifts...industry shifts...hip hop....'new wave', etc. And it started with these incredible songs. Him and Stevie Nicks, are two of the all time great lyricists. When i hear Tom's voice, I go back to great times in my adolescence...running the streets...pool halls...house parties...going to the beach..road trips...sex...jobs...friends moving away...friends/family dying, etc. He covered all the bases for me. RIP, Legend.

I waited until after my therapy session went off the grounds of the center totally breaking the rules!! went into the cathedral one block over went into an Alcove and cried for hours😢 they were about to send the cops out looking for me when I came back and was asked where I had been I didn't say anything just that I had lost a friend, because that is truly what it felt like. I never met him yet I felt like I did, his music took my heart and soul and never gave it back! I escaped to that Cathedral every day the whole time I was there😢 I still miss him so much!

It was a glorious time for real rock that shook you to the bone and everyone was young, life was being discovered and music was unfolding in its creative magic. There will never be such a time ever, the population was "booming" with an overflow of kids and young adults, hungry for the rifs that took them to where they had never been. Was listening to “Purple Haze” wondering where Tom is these days. He’s where he wants to be in case anybody else is wondering. 🙏👁💎👁🌞🌈🦋🌻❤️🎺🦢💜

He wore it every night on the Southern Accents tour. Saw that tour at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin and Poplar Creek in Chicago.

That isn't a sport coat, likely came from Nudie's Rodeo Tailor or Manuel over on Lankershim.

If only he had written I Won't Back Down at this point, it would've been perfect for their set and the concert as a whole. Excellent performance, regardless, just would've been the cherry on top
