Living In Indianapolis Indiana...is It Safe? This is a question I hear quite often from people looking to move to Indianapolis. This video will cover many aspects of this question. I'm not sure if you know but Indianapolis, Indiana is a large city. And, when you include all of the Indianapolis suburbs the number reaches close to 2 million people or so. Given that number it's likely you'll find some crime. Most big cities across the country have some level of violent and property crime. Indianapolis, Indiana is no different. However, living in Indianapolis is probably safer than you might think. I've lived in Indianapolis since 1997 and I have to say it's been quite a good experience. If you're thinking of moving to Indianapolis and have questions about the safety of living there... take a look at this video to see if you're questions are answered.

So far, there has been two drive-by shootings and two other shootings, just on my block! My neighbors are very nice but a bad element still exists here. There are lots of shootings and murders in Indy and if you are looking for trouble, you will find it!

It certainly seems that much of the truly random crime involves people connected to each other in some way, so who you associate with or where you hang out matters. On the far east-side, we seemed to attract a lot of economically and socially challenged people from the gentrification downtown in the past 10-15 years, so that hasn’t helped at all. The best stabilizing factor right now is homeownership, home price appreciation, small business growth and an increasing Hispanic two-parent family population. That’s not to sound racist, but the increase in Hispanic families has kept my neighborhood safe and stable. It’s an affordable area, but many single parent families just seem to struggle with homeownership here, especially if they don’t have good and stable income and a car. After living in Warren township almost three decades, I’ve seen that people can live well and safely in this area IF their lives are economically and socially stable, but people with unstable lives can have difficulty living here.

I'm considering a move from South Bend to Indy. I was told the best thing to know is that it's safest to live north of 38th. Most areas south of that are pretty sketchy. Is that true?
@WishfulThinkingArt
@WishfulThinkingArt 2 жыл бұрын
Mostly true in my experience. 38th street is where the ghetto really takes hold, and the difference between, say, 42nd street (where it starts to get KINDA sketchy) and 38th is STARK! You drive out of the historical district of Meridian Street, with these BEAUTIFUL old houses, and suddenly you see a street with several older, empty buildings, and the occasional drug addict contorting on the sidewalk (that's a rare sight, though, don't worry). However, it gets slightly better the closer you get to downtown, especially south of 10th street.
@bradatkins8777

I live on the east side near 10th & Emerson - my neighborhood is totally fine. The perception of those areas as dangerous is overblown in my opinion. Don't rule anything out until you've seen it - I'd advise avoiding housing on busier streets (like 10th, Rural, Sherman, etc.) and if you see a house of interest I'd recommend driving or walking around the neighborhood a bit just to get an idea of the vibe. A lot of the coolest areas of the city lie south of 38th (Fountain Square, Irvington, Near Northside, and of course downtown) and there are plenty of decent neighborhoods that are plenty affordable in that area.

One other point: most streets in Indy carry on a LONG ways, so to single out any one street and call it unsafe can cast a cloud over entire areas. Assuming things are similar now to when I lived there going back to 2014, 38th @ POST RD was the *hot* spot, between that and 46th. The other area some claim was rough was down around 21st and Post. But even with that, just some common sense and a bit of street wit will keep a person straight anywhere, particularly in Indy. I lived down on the south side, Meridian @ Southport, and spent a lot of time over off the 21st and Post area, and aside from some crackhead sawing off my catalytic converter once--and some knucklejack shooting up during the 2010 Black Expo downtown--I never experienced any issues or felt unsafe. (Then again I also don't freak out whenever I see what some would call "sketchy", either.) I'd highly recommend Indy to anyone interested in it. I was back recently, about a year and change ago, and was AMAZED at the growth and change going on there. I'm sure costs of living are going up all over, but I still rate Indy as a great value all things considered. (And before anyone goes there, there are PLENTY of good areas of town INSIDE 465 to live in...I say this because I've seen and known of several who try to steer folk to the outer suburbs as if to "escape the sketch". If one chooses and can afford Hamilton County then by all means handle that, but Marion County itself also is pretty well decent.)

Downtown safe? Are you serious? The main jail is located there and they release offenders at all times of the day and night. Street people are living in tents under over passes and several have addiction and mental illness challenges which may pose a risk to those walking around. Panhandling is not illegal here and it's apparent! I've had my apartment broke into 2 different times during broad daylight! Also had 3 vehicles stolen, only 1 was recovered. The last 6 months of 2021 crime has reached record highs. I'd recommend to anybody visiting or moving here, to be extremely careful. I have several police officer friends and I'm sure they would all agree, the safety of this city is getting worse.

We like Indianapolis, but I have to admit; the Saxony/high school area was just too much for us. The teacher killing story, the high school bomb threat from the church across the street, the constant traffic on Olio with terrible drivers. I think it's just too much of a congested area with all those schools on the same road.

Downtown Indy is not safe at night. The workers who work downtown get escorted to the cars because them getting robbed. Homeless people literally sleep in the mall. I’m a door dasher I go downtown to make my money so I often talk to workers. Mass Ave is a different story. I could just easily see someone being totally shocked going downtown at night.

Bad advice. Almost everything worthwhile in Indianapolis is inside the 465 loop. Lots of great neighborhoods. Just be smart about the neighborhoods you look into. The crime is way overblown and not a significant issue in 90% of the city (especially the near east side, where I live). If you want to live in the suburbs that's your choice, but if you're scared of EVERYTHING inside of 465 then you need a reality check.
