Raccoons are great when they are babies, but they don't stay young for long. They grow up fast, and when they do, they become very stubborn. This is because they are preparing to leave there mom when they are out in the wild. They are trying to figure things out for themselves because they will be on there own very soon.
Even at the three month mark raccoons are definitely considered babies, but this is when they start getting out of hand. They like to do what they want, and that usually means not doing what you want them to do. It is very important that you cut out any unwanted behaviors at this time because they are still small and impressionable. They won't be for very long, and if you let these behaviors go unchecked, when they are full grown adults it will become a massive problem. Things that are cute when they are little, such as ear biting, isn't as cute when they are adults. They can easily bite through your ear, lip, or fingers.
Raccoons are extremely strong animals so its important to have them behaving the way you would want them to when they are young so they will be more tame when they are older. If you have any questions feel free to message me at my email: TitoTheRaccoon@gmail.com

Living with a Raccoon: 1 Year Update
This is a do it yourself raccoon video, where I tell you how to take care of one and the things you should do while they are growing up. I also go over some frequently asked questions you might have about raccoons, and baby raccoons. Don't forget to check out my FAQ raccoon video as well! Its important to do as much research on these guys as you before getting one. They are a lot of work and are definitely not a pet most people should have. Also source your pet raccoon ethically and legally!

Exactly what I was thinking. I've had all kinds of different animals as pets and they all turn into jerks during puberty. Just like humans. The good news is the bad behavior doesn't last forever. Unlike some humans.

I had the same situation over 30 years ago as a young teenager, the baby’s mother was hit by a car and some friends rescued the babies and my family received one and we named him Bandit! And yes the golden months which was approximately two or three months were a lot of fun, a lot of playing and mischief lots of mischief! Bandit was a lot of fun especially when we used to go down to the local creeks and catch fishing bait, crawdads, madtoms/stonecats and hellgrammites. Bandit once was stung by a madTom/stonecat on his little paw while he was trying to reach in and take the little fish out of the bait pail, he screamed and ran across the rocks on the creek and shook his little paw back-and-forth! Bandit would sleep on my dad‘s head and neck on the couch as they would normally do after dinner watching TV. There was a period of time where fetching apples was the most hilarious with Bandit and climbing on the roof so we would look for him, he was quite a rascal! But eventually my dad decided that Bandit should live outside and as you said because his personality started changing and Bandit did eventually go back into the forest. Sometime later in the Fall he came back To us full-grown with a full coat of hair ready for winter and he allowed my dad to pull the burdocks out of his fur, we had a nice visit for about 15 minutes and he allowed me to pick him up, Then just has he had appeared he left us and went back into the woods never to be seen again.

It really depends on the raccoon. Some choose to leave the domesticated life when they grow up, others come and go but ultimately choose to stay with their human family.

I was flabbergasted. I felt like a had a linch mob living in our trees. For real. What is a raccoon going to do with a wallet? Go to subway because they cat food has lost its 🤯 Pizazz... Hey man I am an Urban Wildlife technician in Canada and I love this story. Although I would never recommend keeping a raccoon past its juvenile stage I do commend you for giving him a home and being a kind soul. I do have some tips for you that may make your time with Tito a bit easier. Giving him toys or obstacles in a closed area may stop him from getting into trouble but I understand the "let him be free mentality" problem with that is if he sees something he's really interested in (ie a female raccoon in heat) he's going to go after her and he could get hurt or worse (contact with diseases, rabies, distemper etc.) but that's up to you obviously. Second tip is using welding gloves and jackets when handling him can minimize scratches and bites! Especially if you need to grab him when he doesn't want you to. Getting him neutered may also help with some behaviour issues as Males have some serious testosterone levels during mating season and can smell females from a suprisingly large distance. If you make him a pen 16 gauge steel screening is 100% raccoon proof and you can get a substantial amount for a affordable price. Good luck hope this helps

I raise racoons in Canada. We immunize them all. They NEED a cat door to transition to the outside world. Everyone criticises that we socialize them. What even experts do not realize is that they return to their completely wild state after hibernating. They sometimes come in a few times for food in the spring, but then never again. (Unless injured.) They are wonderful animals and have raised 25+ successfully in the last 30 years.

@@shadeshiest22 Hello Nick, We have a few videos on our channel. kzbin.info/door/uuW6fL_jbXz-2ClTRDcK6w?view_as=subscriber I hope you can find it through the link. We do accept 1-4 orphans per year, and raise them to live with us, but are free to leave at any time. We never cage our animals. When they are young they are physically on me or with me 24/7 even when going to clients, restaurants or any where else. They would be under my shirt, or in a small cloth bag with my hand in the bag, so they are aware I am with them. As soon as they can follow me around, we walk away from the house towards the pond, and trees. Always walking from tree to tree for security. When a noise happens, we all run to a tree and then look around. I show fear from cars, and run away from any car or car noise. When I get orphans from the city, this is not necessary as they are already car aware. Every raccoon has naturally transitioned to an outdoor animal in the fall, and lived a natural life thereafter. They are socialized to us personally, but are afraid of other humans when we are not present. Only one raccoon, Cody, stayed one winter with us, as he was too small and sick to leave. He was near death from starvation when found in August. He hibernated in the crawl space of our home, 5-10 days at a time. He would come up and eat, and see if winter was gone every week or so and then go back into the crawl space. When spring came, we installed a "cat door" for him to come and go. He came and went for 3-4 further years, until a stray dog moved in. He was then too afraid to enter the house, and went to the outdoor animal feeder. We maintain an outdoor feeder all year long that only small animals can enter. Coyotes and such cannot fit in the opening at the bottom to enter the feeding station. We place about 10-20 pounds of cat food daily in the feeder. It is great to watch how they line up and wait for the prior animal to leave before approaching the feeder. I have seen a raccoon, Suzie in the feeder with our cat Athena years later eating together, shoulder to shoulder. (They were raised together.) Raccoons and skunks are apparently friendly and will literally sit on one another as they eat from the feeded. I started fostering raccoons in 1978 when a news program reported that exterminators had too many and were going to kill them. (Ontario CTV News.) We went and received four babies, and gave two to a neighbour. I was 12 years old. Raising these little clowns was amazing, and rewarding. We went to the University of Toronto to talk to the biology department on rehabilitating them for the wild. We were given a 400 page thesis on the subject, which included that they must NEVER see a human, and you had to feed them with a raccoon costume on. Teach them to "fish" which they do not do, while wearing the same costume. I would have been an outcast as some psycho "furry" had I ran about in a raccoon costume for months on end. While we did many things wrong with our first attempt, including using a cage, the end was one of the two survived the summer and returned to the wild. Future efforts have been almost 100% successful on socialiving them to live with us for the summer, and have them become independent. Many have died as a result of accidents, predation and such, but that is not a failure. When a baby raccoon falls from a tree, and dies, it is nature. It cannot be prevented except by imprisoning them. We live in a rural area with predators. Some fail to return in the morning, when too soon for hibernation or emancipation. While this is very sad, the animal we rescued was days or hours from death. Having provided a safe haven, and vaccinated them against the most common killers, they were given a second chance at a life. We do not need a "rehabilitators" permit, as our animals are NEVER in captivity. When young they stay on my body until they are able to run about. From that day on, they are free to come and go as they wish. They just choose to sleep in our bed next to my wife and I. You can email me at my southwinds engineering site. I use my legal name for every profile and account I have. We have no social media accounts due to our belief it is not a force for good. Thanks, Heiner Philipp

@Adam Jensen yes it is, every word I spoke is in the English dictionary. If it wasnt how would you have known I was trying to speak English in the first place. Yo and imma were the only slang but it's still English slang. Stay in your lane, trash.

@Adam Jensen I know I'm not a moron because I dont go around telling people clearly speaking English to learn how. Maybe you should focus on yourself and learn how to understand everyone has different speech patterns and habits. How did you get this far in life without being able to acknowledge that? Answer: it's because you're a shallow minded idiot that thinks your way is the only way.

I live in florida. One year a bad storm hit. When it finally passed i went for a walk to see all the damage in the neighborhood. I found two baby racoons at the base of a tree, i scooped them up and cradled them in my arms. I decided to walk them to a near by animal clinic. They were so adorable, i wish i had kept them. Im just glad i was able to help in time.

That part about their discipline changing as they age is so unbelievably true. I had a raccoon when I was in the 8th grade and it was awesome. Although, once he was about 5 months old, he got incredibly aggressive and non-attentive. It was disappointing and I missed his dog-like personality but we worked around it. Best experience of my life. RIP Joe.

This is a great video! I love hearing this guy describe his relationship with Tito. He's great at explaining. My dad and his brother had pet raccoons when they were kids. Their descendants still lived in my grandma's back yard when I was a kid, and we fed them crackers and peanut butter every night. My dad was always friends with the backyard raccoons at our house, too. They were always his favorite animal. He said that the main thing he would not do is leave his raccoon shut into the house with no escape while he was gone, because he would tear his way out of the house.

I am not recommending a raccoon as a pet but, here's my thoughts as a previous owner of 2 raccoons named Bandit and Millisa. They are very mischievous as they grow older, but part of that has do with hormones. Having a raccoon spaid or neutered makes them much better pets but, many don't plan to be raccoon owners...it just happens. Many people see babies unattended and think they are abandoned...But this is usually NOT true!! Mom is usually not far away and should be left alone to let Mom retrieve them. Raccoons in the wild, will naturally put on weight in fall for winter but, as Pets many let them get too heavy or do not follow a proper diet because of course, they love 'everything' and are not getting the exercise they require. Raccoons are very very smart!! They can be extremely loving and all have completely different personalities. But as one poster said it here...YOU are their pet! Like having any exotic animal or bird, it is not for everyone, requires much research and patience! You are a great Dad, keep up the great work and your education! Thanks for sharing your Videos, life with these Rascals!! 😁👍

Such a cute Racc. Thank you for saving him. Raccs usually find their own way at puberty. I volunteered at a rescue where we had 100s of racc kits each year. They are adorable ( and loud) when they are young. They are very independent as they get older.

Back in the late 90's, I crashed at my friend's house and his cat brought a baby mouse to the driveway in the morning. It was amazingly still alive. I immediately called my girl who worked at a vet office. I'd regretfully smash it if I had to, rather than let it die a prolonged death. She told me to keep it warm, but it will almost certainly die. If I were the one suffering, I'd like to be given a chance to come back. I had no expectation of the mouse's survival but wanted to at least try, so I got a plastic cup filled with cotton balls, gently packed the nude little thing in the cup with some breathing space and dried grass, did some skateboarding for a couple hours until noon with the mouse set gently on the passenger seat of my friend's car, and the mouse was still alive when we came back. I tried to feed it some water or at least wet it down to absorb moisture, since I know that people can survive for a while without food but only a couple days without hydration, and met up with my girl after work at 4pm. She used a milk solution and a tiny syringe without a needle, and the baby went bonkers on it. I did a 3 hour regimen for about a week, and the little mouse grew like crazy. After about two weeks it was still young enough to stick with me at all times but looked fully grown. He was totally happy in the pocket of my hoodie or up my sleeve, and he loved sunflower seeds. I was buying books one time when Barnes & Noble was still a mall anchor, he was sitting on my shoulder and a wound up having a pretty lengthy conversation with a couple of moms. I gues a guy with a mouse on his shoulder isn't something you see often. Long story short, the little fellow grew to young adulthood and I released it into the stone wall along my parents property line after he started chewing through his shoebox and plastic hamster homes my girl and I offered him. We said goodbye, best wishes and left him with a pile of sunflower seeds and a salute. My folks had a mouse problem in the kitchen the year after, so I assume he did ok for himself and had many offspring.
