1. I don't think you'll regret switching out the nano texture with a the normal iPad and going down to 512 GB. A £500 savings is substantial. 2. As an ardent macOS user I *do not* want macOS on an iPad. All they really have to do is implement a better file manager and better app and window management. 3. Many reviewers have said that the ipad gets you to 90% of being able to replace your Mac, but there are quirks that stops is from replacing a Mac - Apple still wants to sell Macs so I think iPadOS will always fall behind. 4. Excellent video, David. I'm glad you took the full week to use and review. You answered all of my questions and I am stoked you got the M4 so it should last you for years. It's not for me as iPadOS is what's holding me back. Have an excellent week,

The only things I couldn't do on my iPad Pro instead of on my Mac is macros in Excel and for my astrophoto editing you really need a strong desktop computer, to stack hundreds of single 49 mb photos. Most astroediting software is for desktop PC's, but the iPad is strong enough to do single astrophoto editing (fits files), but we don't have the right apps/software for that (yet).

Excellent M4 iPad Pro “new user” review: I watched your initial video on the M4 iPad Pro when you ordered it. I was hoping you’d use it for a few days to understand and fully appreciate what an iPad Pro can do. And you did 🙌 I’ve been an iPad user since the iPad 2. Traveled the US and the world with it doing business seminars, writing books, and writing a weekly blog post. Always loved the platform. Upgraded from an M1 iPad Pro 12.9 to M4 13”. M4 is amazing beyond words. Yes, I have an M1 14” MacBook Pro when needed … but work almost exclusively on my iPad. Just wanted to say how much I appreciated your review. It was nice to not watching another video bashing iPadOS. iPadOS gets better each year. Enjoy your new M4 iPad Pro.

hi there Neil - what a great response. I can tell you are a fellow writer. I write on Medium about my Apple life… I think part of the appeal of the iPad to me was coming at it fresh. I wanted to be unbiased and speak as I find. Yes, I have had a few problems, but they have either been my making or I’ve found ways to overcome them. This need to bash iPadOS seems a little off to me. Sure, it’s different to macOS, but then again I think it’s intended to be. So far, so good…
@erikalmqvist6 ай бұрын
The main point with the 1 TB storage model is neither the extra storage nor the extra CPU core, but the double ram size. 16 instead of 8 GB ram might make a big difference longterm when iPadOS is evolving and becoming more powerful and when App Store offers more and more full feature apps.
@DavidLewisTech6 ай бұрын
Yes, Erik - thats my thinking since making the video too. I know you can never say for certain what’s coming downstream, but in these rapidly evolving AI times, that extra RAM may finally come in useful!
@erikalmqvist6 ай бұрын
@@DavidLewisTech To be frank the 8 GB ram might already be a limitation. Take for example Baldurs gate 3 - the game runs great on an M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB ram. With 8 GB ram however it drops frames, stutters and isn't really playable. Since BG3 runs on M1, M2 and M3 Macs it would of course tun on iPads too... if it wasn't for the ram. When the baseline iPad Pros and iPad Airs start shipping with 16 GB ram in 2-3 years we will see a lot of new apps and games making use of the extra ram. So anyone who buys an iPad Pro today to keep for more than 2-3 years should go for the 1 TB version IMO.

"Why would you want a MacOS on an iPad" is the question with the most obvious answer ever: to become your working machine. The form factor, hardware, and weight are phenomenal, but the OS nerfs it and wastes its potential. I am not a Mac user, but if knew I could fire up any of my mainline tools like I can on my Windows laptop I would have bought the previous one immediately, and then I would have replaced it with this new one equally fast. Now everything about it becomes a scenario like "I will have this with me out to my 3D printers... But can I edit a file if I have to before printing it? Oh, I can't..." and then repeat that over and over, just replacing the task. If it can't do what my 2013 Surface Pro can take care of without hassle, then its just a toy. And that Surface Pro proves desktop apps work just fine on a machine in this format. A bit clunky without a pen or trackpad? Yes. Works just fine with a pen or trackpad, and even if a bit clunky, having the real tools available is far superior to not having them. In any scenario, any location, any time and any place. Always. It doesn't really need to run full fat MacOS either, but it needs to be able to run the desktop apps within iPad OS. "Just buy a Mac!" I hear someone say. If I can't draw on it, its useless to me. So, no.

Great suggestions and a nice presentation Dave. Even so there is no way can I agree with you on buying two machines to complete the tasks one machine should perform? I use Dwarflab for telescope control and SkySafari Pro for checking targets. What do you mean with lucky imaging. Just pointing the telescope somewhere?
@chelsea1004855 ай бұрын
Lucky imaging is when you take a video instead of a photo and then you use some software to find the best frames from the video to combine the “luckiest” frames (the ones with least atmospheric distortion). Good for imaging the planets. I use some tools on my PC for this if you’ve got something similar on iPad that would be awesome!
@BommeltjeNL5 ай бұрын
No, there no automated app for that on iPadOS. Instead of video we use multiple individual photos and in for example Siril (on PC or Mac) you can choose which files to use for stacking. So stacking on an iPad is not really working. You really need a beast of a PC for that to work good. But editing single file photos (already stacked) should be possible on the iPad, although we are still waiting for an app to be able to read and edit fits files. The iPads are getting better and better, stronger each year, but the waiting is for a software engeneer to create such an app.

Black, white, all shades of gray and r+g+b combinations are color-balanced and do not evoke a significant mental response like other colors and do not tire, black is also a calming color and evening wear is black. This is not visible in the video, which indicates their low quality, but in reality the frames are dark blue due to the standard anti-reflective coating and accordingly match the black and blue color of the body. Since mid-2019, the side frames of the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air have become pleasantly narrow. On one of the TV models, LG added a tapering small transparent frame on all sides to the black frame, which is very harmonious for stationary devices. Some reviewers believe that the wide black frames promote deep diving. For you personally, the narrow frames of the iPad Pro are the same as those of your phone, laptop, monitor, and TV, and this means a very pleasant, constantly pleasing harmony. Almost narrow frames allow you to reduce the size of the device without reducing the screen size.

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and it’s time to upgrade my tech. Thinking of switching to the iPad Pro, but worried I will be limited to iPadOS. Waiting until WWDC before I decide between buying the new iPad Pro or a new MacBook. I’ve never had an iPad but the form factor seems so great when paired with the Magic Keyboard. Do you think we’ll see any major improvements to iPadOS at WWDC? Would love to see a video on what you’re expecting to come to iPadOS at WWDC.

Excellent video. The iPad Pro w/keyboard and pencil is the ultimate daily driver. Does so many things that a MacBook cannot do. On the flip side, the MacBook does very little that an iPad cannot do and for most of us, those few things are meaningless. I don’t get why so many people opt for a MacBook over an iPad these days. I understand for very specific applications, there is no substitute for a Mac. But for the rest of us, the iPad offers so much more. And completely agree with your opinion on MacOS coming to iPads… why??? Please don’t ever do that Apple. iPadOS is just way too good. MacOS on an iPad would be a crime.

Nice. Great video as always. Glad you’re not finding iPadOS too limiting. I do struggle with multitasking on it as a system admin/developer. I also struggle with scaling on my widescreen display, and the way audio gets stolen from a background app like Music when the foreground app makes a sound. Also accessing external mics and cameras on a Thunderbolt Display is very temperamental. On a MacBook Air everything just works. And I can’t just plug in a webcam direct to the iPad with external display as it only has a single usb connector. As a professional IT worker, I can go to a client site with a MacBook with confidence, but with an iPad there is a far greater risk they’ll be something I can’t do. So yeah, if I’m dropping 1500 plus on a device like this, I’d like the option to boot into a fully functional OS for when that makes sense. Because the hardware can do what I want spinning on its head. I hope WWDC brings some radical change to iPadOS when it’s in ‘laptop mode’.

Hi there Paul - wonderful to hear from you again. You make some great points and some that I should probably cover - such as using my Canon with it. I think thats something I’ll cover…great idea. Overall, switching to mainly using the iPad this week has been far more pain free than I’d have expected. I have had some user specific issues. Ulysses is a pain to write in and the Medium app is far from perfect. Some of these problems are down to the app rather than the iPad. I’ve used the Studio Display a few times and it adds a new dimension and makes it a far more desk-like experience. I’ll keep an eye out on the window re-sizing. Thanks for a great response. Today I’m heading to Battersea to make a final call on the display….

As it became clear from Apple WWDC 2024 Keynote, the capabilities of the “Files” program have not increased and work with files will be carried out using the same rather complex methods. In the case of HDD, an increase in disk capacity meant an increase in the internal disk cache, although the operating system rationally uses free memory to buffer I/O, the longitudinal recording density on cylinders also increased, as well as the number of cylinders, which, with an almost constant rotation speed due to the above factors, meant a much higher speed operation of a larger capacity disk. In the case of an SSD, there is no transition from cylinder to cylinder and the time spent on this, but there is no direct effect from the presence of simultaneously working magnetic heads in the HDD. We can assume that higher-capacity drives use more advanced technologies that also provide higher performance. If data is stored in the Cloud, in case there is no connection to it, a copy of the Cloud data is created on disk for reading the record and synchronizing if there is a connection. Since the volume of Cloud data can be large, it also requires a significant amount of space on the computer’s SSD, and now there is an 8 terabyte option. In this case, both the cost of the computer’s SSD and the additional Cloud capacity are paid.

The reason people want Mac OS on it I is because it has incredible hardware but it's basically a big phone. All the apps on it can be run on the M1. So apple is really charging you way too much if you can't like take advantage of it with any of the software. Ipad pro is supposed to be for professionals, but there's really hardly any professional apps. the video editing apps that it has, it's better to do that stuff on PC because It's just way slower. Editing a video on iPad because there's no keyboard. Shortcuts and you waste a lot of time pressing with the pencil or your finger
@DavidLewisTech6 ай бұрын
Hi there William - as you may know, I’m new to iPad life so it has been an interesting experiment for me to find out how the two OS compare. If I reach for my iPad, I’m not looking for it to be a Mac - I know which device suits the task I have in mind the best, so I don’t mind that iPadOS differs from macOS. I will wait to try editing in Final Cut until I’ve had that training I mentioned, but from what I’ve seen of it this week Apple seems to have optimised screen real estate for FCP on iPad.
@williammclean65946 ай бұрын
@@DavidLewisTech I've never tried an iPad either. This will be my first one. But that's what I hear. Everybody complains about professionals like it because it's easy to get a lot of stuff done. And they would like to replace their laptop with it. But the bad file management and being really clunky doing certain PC. Things isn't there yet. They would just have to make iPad OS better. Like how Samsung does with Samsung Dex It mimics a PC way better than what Apple does with stage manager. Android has a overall better file manager than iPad. It's more close to Windows. You can save things to certain places. And the complaints with iPad is It saves all your photos and things to like photo apps even though they're files. And if you're saving video sometimes it won't even open the file. You have to download like a video viewing app and then open the file that you're looking for from that app. That can be a real hassle if you're like a professional photographer or something like that I'm sure that Apple wants you to have both but with the limitations to iPad They're really overcharging you. Because a macbook is way cheaper than an iPad. I'd be upset to spend like $4,000 on iPad but couldn't do everything my MacBook could.

"boot" is something Apple doesnt like. Apple will try to remove mac in the next generation. The future is ipad esp kids and high school students now are more familiar to iPhone than complex mac or windows. The future is cloudbased files, AI, and apps that doesnt allow piracy and those are only possible to iPads. That's why no netflix on macs. iPad OS just need to polish file management with AI that detects piracy for ebooks, pdfs, videos etc. Same how youtube detects copyright
