I loved the Vasa museum, I had a day in Stockholm on a trip to Finland, and that's what I chose to do with my day! It was rainy, so perfect activity.

I was able to spend a few days exploring Stockholm as we stayed just an hours train ride away. We too enjoyed the Vasa. Wow! Hit the Abba gift shop but not the museum because I wanted to spend lots of time at the Skansen Open Air museum. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned lots about Nordic countries. Also enjoyed City Hall. I’m surprised how you were able to navigate on your own without issues. We got lost trying to find a place where we wanted to get Swedish meatballs (love the lingen berry sauce!) because we didn’t realize the city is built on so many different levels. We found ourselves two levels up from where we wanted to be. It was an interesting experience trying to find ways to get down the different levels.

We did a Baltic cruise last year and went to the amusement park, for about an hour until that big blue coaster derailed and shut the park down for a couple weeks. We were heading to get on that one with a FastPass, so that was my near death experience. Did like what we saw in Stockholm though.

We did the “ice bar” experience in Las Vegas. It was fun . I would love to go back to Sweden and experience Stockholm and other cities. We were so close by being in Copenhagen in Denmark.
@John_Locke_10820 күн бұрын
I never did the ice bar because my logic is that I've been outside drinking during January up here in New England plenty of times and it's not pleasant. But I could see how someone from a warm climate would enjoy the novelty of being in the freezing cold.

The Stockholm archipelago is hard to beat in calm weather. The waters become like a mirror. There are thousands of islands and lakes, Sweden has over a quarter million islands making it the country with the most islands in the world. I remember going to the open wet dock and to see the Vasa in its first museum it was placed in, still showered with waters mixed with wax. I haven't been to the final museum, but it is stunning and mindboggling to experience. I think I would prefer going to Den Gyldende Freden "the golden peace" which is a very very old and highly cultural restaurant/ inn which has hosted a host of different important cultural people through the centuries since it opened in 1722 at the same address. It was once owned by renowned painter Anders Zorn who willed it to the Swedish Academy (who in turn are responsible for the Nobel Prize in litterature) and they gather from time to time in their own suite, Bellman (after a very famous troubadour), at Freden to have traditional split pea soup with pork and pancakes and a glass of warm punsch (not the type served in the US, but a very, very sweet golden liqueur) , always on a Thursday since that is old tradition from when Sweden used to adhere to catholic tradition. Meaning, Friday you didn't eat meat according to tradition. Even to this day many schools use Thursdays as "soup days" on their menu (not necessarily pea soup) but sometimes they serve pancakes along with the soup. Swedish schools are required by law to serve free lunch to the students in compulsory school.

It's because of the brackish waters. Stockholm sits by lake Mälaren which meets the salt waters of the Baltic Ocean, and that mix has proven a great concoction of preserving wood because the waters aren't suitable for shipworms, and the deep sediments that covrered it helped reservation as well, keeping it away from oxidising as well. Just outside Stockholm is Birka (or Björkö) Island (literally Birch Island) which sports a very well preserved viking village and museum and viking ships (well, we'd call them boasts nowadays) have been found as well in these waters. Birka is about an hour by a very scenic boat ride which takes you past the Royal residence of Drottningholm which is a grorious nod to Versailles, boasting a vast park and the oldest still functioning Rokoko theatre that still puts on shows.
