Happy to hear you enjoyed visiting my home town, Stockholm! I just love watching non-Scandinavians try licorice with salmiak! It's so funny! Salmiak is the "salt", it's not ordinary table salt (Sodium chloride), but ammonium chloride. Yeah, it's really an aquired taste, I really like it

Im glad you enjoyed Stockholm. The Mushroom had payphones around its "stem" before, but payphones disappeared many years ago. So now it is just a big mushroom left.

haha that face was priceless :), managed to get my sisters boyfriend who is French Canadian to also consume one of those last Christmas (myself I can eat a whole can). Fun fact is that the salt is not table salt but ammonium chloride, a compound that the EU wanted to put harsh limits on to protect food from being contaminated with a limit of 3grams per kg while Swedish liquorice have around 70grams per kg (and ofc the Svenskjävlar that you tested have a bit more than that), in the end Sweden got an exception since the consumption of liquorice was seen as so small that it should have no health impact on a nationwide basis.

@livingphase2 Back in my late twenties I invented my own variety if you're brave. You take a cooked hot dog, wrap it in a few slices of deli roast beef, and top it with a little sour cream. I even made a little jingle: Hot Dogs and roast beef living in harmony Some say it's funny I say it's yummy. Hot Dogs and roast beef living in harmony.

Have to admit loving my Icelandic salt licorice but it was not the saltiest and I ate it in tiny bites. One of our favorite excursions is a food tour with a local.

Aquavit is a flavored liqueur made from grain or potatoes, usually containing cumin, dill, anis, and fänkål. Many different variants exist in herb/spice vise, and how they are stored. Very popular during Scandinavian holidays like midsummer, crayfish season, new year etc.

The salt covrered licorice is salmiak (ammonium chloride), which is on the rise of actually becoming the sitxth basic flavor. Salmiak is humongous in Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands. It sure is a palate divider just like Marmite and Vegemite. I llloooove salmiak and have a jar of it I dip dates in. I'm glad you enjoyed the food. Do try the svenska nubbar with fatty fish, or creamy food. We use it at feasts like Midsummer's, Crayfish festival, and Surströmming happenings as well. It really should be accompanied with a nubbe song, but no pressure... 😅 As for "fee-ka" (not "ficka" which means "pocket" in Swedish) I' m team cardamon roll, and the hot dog really should have been a "tunnbrödsrulle" which is a couple of thin hot dogs stuffed down a soft wheat tortilla type wrap (tunnbröd=thin bread) along with mashed potatoes, relish, and shrimp salad. A classic people eat after a night on the town waiting for the bus or subway back home. You only scratched the surfa e, so do come back if you get the chance. Great video.

Actually all liquor stores (Systembolaget, despite being owned by the government) are not all the same in Sweden. Most of them have the same items for sale however, there are local variations. Some spirit producers only release their products locally and so.... You can find unique products in a lot of this stores (usually under the label "småskaligt och lokalt"... This means "small scale and local"). Ask the workers there and they can help you find this section in the store.

That makes a lot of sense the people working the stores were very knowledgeable

Haha, the Finns have an alcoholic beverage version of salmiakki (that salty licorice).. it is by far the worse thing I ever did put in my mouth! xD Think Jagermeister, but thicker and salty... 🤮 I'd try and eat corned beef again before I touch salmiakki! xD

@@livingphase2 Haha! To each their own... for me, I'm 40 and there are only two foods-/drinks I wasn't able to keep down in my whole life: my grandma's corned beef stew (RIP), and a shot of salmiakki liqueur. 😂 I'm sure corned beef can be good if prepared differently, and I'm just traumatized from my one bad experience... but nothing will save the liqueur. Just horrible. 🤣
