Actually the 16" barrel will waste a pile of powder, great muzzle flash but not very efficient.
@ronjones1414
@ronjones1414 5 күн бұрын
@panthermartin7784 there's ways to fix that. You just change powder burn rate and capacity.

@@ronjones1414 yes sir I understand that but to get that bullet to expand and punch a hole you need fps and thats not gonna happen with a 16" barrel, I have several carbines with this barrel length and theres a reason the factory tests were never done with a 16". If you have a magic potion please share.
@ronjones1414

@panthermartin7784 it starts at 2275. Interlock round nose is dead soft, expands to 1800 fps. No black bear alive is going to enjoy that within 50 yards; and a grizzly wouldn't be happy about it either. He's only looking at 25 yards. Even at 100, you're still beating a 300 whisper.

A small test to see lands might be able to see you make them a tad bit longer if they fit the magazine and get a little more oomph ourlt of them. My .308 has a 2.850" magazine and the throat is a tad long, so it likes bullets heavier than it might otherwise. Love that you did this video.

Fmj spitzer bullets will often tumble or be deflected when striking heavy bone, not reaching the vitals of heavy game or passing straight through making a pencil size hole for a very slow kill. The round nose or flat point will penitrate in a straighter line with more energy transfer. Take note what kind of cartridges and bullets work best on heavy dangerous game. The 220 grain bullet was the best available 30 cal in the old days before premium controlled expansion bullets like Nosler partitions. Plain cup and core bullets performance best in the 2200 - 2700 fps range with the high sectional density bullets penitrating best. Take note the slower 30-30 will out penitrate the 308 and 30-06 with all loaded with a 150 grain bullet because the higher velocity will cause rapid expansion and thus lesser penitration. That can give faster kills on lighter came but not necessarily on heavier game. A bullet needs to bust the shoulder bone to damage heart lung area of game animals. 223 and 243 have been known to fail to do that even on deer size game on occasion. Bullet wounding is not consistent or predictable. Premium bullets will occasionally fail.

I cast the lee 200 1R and the 230 5R for my 308 win with a 1 in 10" twist. Never shot with full power loads but have gel tested both at 1,000fps and 1,600fps. They dont dump energy like traditional loads but instead yaw at around the 6" mark, leaving a very long and nasty cut through the gel. About 5 to 6" of permanent cavitation, about 1.5" wide. Similar to that of a broad head. I saw full penetration with 20" of block. I wasn't happy with the clarity of the block, so the video never got posted. I should give it another go one day with fresh blocks.

At slower velocities, the bullets will not be as stabile. Thanks for watching!
@raysbudgetslowmo
@raysbudgetslowmo 7 күн бұрын
@30-06john They are still stable in flight at least from a 1 in 10" about half and inch at 50yds and about 2-3" at 100yds, I can't comment on a 1 in 12" barrel. But once inside of the gel, it quickly becomes unstable and makes a nasty wound channel with more than 20" of penetration. A great choice for larger (not dangerous) game despite a lack of muzzle energy. I believe old school round nosed are under estimated when compared to the explosiveness of modern expanding bullets. They create a massive amount of blood loss without all the copper fragments, but they do not look as impressive

At that velocity it should hold together quite well. I have used them in my 30-06, but never shot anything with them. Frankly, they are essentially obsolete today. I use Nosler Partitions exclusively for hunting living game now. I think 180's in a 308 would be a very good balance between velocity and penetration. The short neck on the 308 and long boolitz cause a loss of powder capacity above 180 grains from the necessary deep seating to make 2.8" OAL. Dunt git et!! Jerry
@30-06john
@30-06john 15 күн бұрын
180s in a 308 are probably the best balance. But a 220 going 2275 is serious stopping power. Nosler does make a .308 220gr semi spitzer Partition bullet. Thanks for watching!

If you're trying to prevent a grizzly from entering your tent, I wonder how that bullet would work if you seated it backwards. It might puncture the skull more readily as a flat meplat solid than a relatively soft, soft-point bullet. However, a lot of rifles won't feed rounds like that from magazine to chamber. I know this from experiments with certain flat nose cast lead slugs. Might make a good subject for a video. Thanks John!

At tent range, im not sure if it would matter if you used 150, 180, or 220 grain bullets. 😂

I have read of hunters in Africa doing that in an emergency! Barnes Busters are a heavy jacket flat nose bullet, I use then in my 450 Marlin and 450 Bushmaster. I'll have to think about a video! Take care!

I think anything heavier than 180 grain in .308 is not efficient use of your case capacity.
