Ever considered the parallels between Santa and the Devil? Apart from being an anagram of Satan, Satan was derived from Saturn (again, Saturnalia, the feast of Saturn), then there's St Nicholas, while the Devil is also known as Old Nick. Goes deeper - there's the legend of Black Peter, the Santa figure for the naughty kids..But aside from that, they're both traditionally depicted wearing red.
@meganpata9033 Жыл бұрын
@@alistairogilvy7696a lot of people are traditionally depicted as wearing red. “Santa” means “saint” in Germanic languages. It is not an anagram of Satan lol 😂 Santa Klaus = Saint Nicholas. Nothing to do with Satan. But secular Santa also has almost nothing to do with St. Nick so there’s that
@alistairogilvy7696 Жыл бұрын
@meganpata9033 strictly speaking, it is an anagram. Take the 'n' from the end of Satan, drop it in the middle of the word - hey presto. Yes, Santa means 'saint' in the Teutonic languages - of which English is one, however Santa Claus is of very modern derivation - circa 1900. And it's Sinter Klaas, not Santa Klaas. I'm just pointing out the parallels. And Satan was derived from Saturn - which, astrologically holds you to the consequences of your actions, good or bad - paralleling the 'naughty vs nice' theme of Xmas, and the Black Peter flipside of the jolly fat man (modern invention, ofc), who punishes the naughty children. The archetypal resemblances are fairly clear, including the Saint Nick/Old Nick which I pointed out.

Both of these pieces were controversial and rejected by the people that commissioned them. He had more like that, but those are the most well known. It's easy to look at the pieces the Church commissioned and accepted and understand their meaning (though I'd argue there are images within the Sistine Chapel that don't seem to fit with the other figures) and just ignore his other works that are intentionally not so straightforward.

I just looked at her stranglely. I will continue to wish people a Merry Christmas in December and not give into the generic paganistic 'happy holidays' so many people say during the Christmas season.

That's what I think to. When Thanksgiving comes around it's called the "holiday season"... hence saying "happy holidays" doesn't bother me when I hear it from strangers. I love how Michael pointed out (around 02:40) that the Feast of Sol Invictus was likely created by the Pagans in direct response to Christianity. This reminds me of the modern day manufactured holidays of both Kwanzaa and Festivus (among so many others).
@jendoe94362 жыл бұрын
It is funny that anytime people see a pagan festivity or practice that is similar to a Christian festival or practice, automatically the Christians ‘stole’ it from pagans. Even if the timeline is way off, the similarities are very superficial and stretched to near falsehood. People really need to actually research claims and use common sense.

@truthedministry2 жыл бұрын
Saturnalia was celebrated on the winter solstice since well before 200 B.C. It was likely celebrated long before recorded history, but it is only around that time that we have writings describing changes made to the holiday. How it used to just be the single day on the solstice itself, but around 200 B.C. it became a week long celebration. If you look at the activities surrounding the solstice, you will find the exchanging of gifts, decorating trees, and feasts. The Feast of Sol Invictus is simply a renaming of these celebrations much like how the Feast of Dedication is now more commonly referred to as Hanukkah. If you look into it, Hanukkah didn't start to become popular until around the 1800s, but the Feast of Dedication is so old that Jesus himself participated in it. What Michael did here is akin to trying to claim that Hanukkah was created as an alternative to Christmas as well, when it is far more apt to say this goes the other way around.

Why are they so fixated on Paganism and adamant to defend it when Paganism was created to make a class divide. While Christianity preached equality, which is how it spread. It started with the lower class in Rome.
@truthedministry2 жыл бұрын
@@everyonesfavoritesejong What are you going on about? No one here is defending Paganism. I am criticizing Catholicism for doing exactly what Jesus criticized the Pharisees over, combining the teachings of men with the teachings of God and misleading His people. Catholicism is a bastardization of Christianity in that it tries to combine pagan teachings and customs with True Christian teachings from the Bible. And oddly enough many of those pagan teachings are exactly contrary to Biblical teachings.

5:45 Nope, not at all. The first reference to a Yule log actually comes from 1648 in Robert Herrick’s Hesperides poetry collection where he calls it a “Christmas log,” with it being referred to as a “Yule-log or Xtmass block” in John Aubrey’s Remaines of Gentilsme and Judaisme forty years later in 1686. The name change was because the term “Yule” was a term for the midwinter period in England and was not intended to harken back to an ancient, pagan festival in Norway.

There's no better way to learn about other people's cultures & histories than embrace & join in their celebrations. Yet we want to segregate or squash the traditions all together. I don't consider myself a Christian, but I celebrate Christmas. I've grown up with it, I love the story of the birth of a savior & redeemer & I love the spirit of generosity & charity around Christmas. I do see some crossover in the stories & myths - it's interesting & I love learning about those things, but it ultimately shouldn't matter how others believe or celebrate their own holidays or embrace their faith. This is America & people can celebrate the way they want and give whatever greeting they want. Michael! I'm surprised at your analogy! You must know--many Italians celebrate St. Josephs' Day with zeppoles and other baked goods set up on a (typically) three-tiered table and decorated with table clothes--like a altar. Sometimes set up in a church hall, sometimes in a home, the bottom line is that Nonna opens the basement kitchen and bakes her arthritic fingers off for this saint. (In case he stops by or something. God forbid there's nothing for him to eat.) So yes, St. Joseph's day is a minor holy day/holiday, but still--for some Catholics, it's a day of celebrating (and food preparation).
