People with sound judgment do not romanticize it. They see it what it is - tragedy. Nabokov makes it clear, so does Adrian Lyne. That is why both the book and Lyne's versions are disturbing. They should be. Adults can admire beautiful teenagers from a distance, but they must not touch them. With the time he had (it was not a series), Lyne did quite well to show what happens when the line gets crossed. Everybody dies at the end. How romantic is that?

They need to make a remake with Lolita's point of view. Here's free idea for Hollywood - pregnant Lolita and her husband are desperate for money and she's afraid for her baby to end up like her. As she sits down to write a letter to her 'father' Humbert Humbert to ask for money, she reflects on her childhood and how she ended up in situation like this. As she strokes her belly she silently promises her baby that she will never be like her own mother and soon they will move to Alaska and the life will get better. The scene cuts to Lolita's childhood where her father can afford good life (maid and beautiful house) but her mom's attitude, mainly pretending to be cultured while having terrible explosive temper, keeps the family from advancing in the society. Things take much worse turn when Lolita's father dies and her mom is desperate to maintain the appearances of a socialite, despite never being invited to anything big and having very few friends. We get to see few fighting scenes between Lolita and Charlotte, how Charlotte is getting jealous of her daughter's beauty and attention she gets from her friend Quilty. Quilty becomes Lolita's first sexual experience and even though he's impotent, Lolita actually enjoys 'his magic fingers' and she develops naive crush on older men, especially Quilty. Charlotte tries to entice him very much like she tried with Humbert but fails and her anger with everything Lolita does only intensifies. We get to see how Lolita admits she tried to use Humbert to get from her mother more attention and how that backfired. When Humbert moves in, the only person to warn Lolita against him is the maid but Lolita brushes it off. We see the events in the movie from her perspective after Humbert takes her from the summer camp, how Lolita is persuaded by Humbert to sleep together and gets drugged and is still dizzy the morning he drugs her and how he uses her confusion to sleep with her. How terrified she is in the gas station and calls Quilty for help as he's the only other person with means who could help her and how Quilty manipulates her to play along Humbert's wishes. We get to see how miserable Lolita is at nights, crying and desperate but too afraid to run away and during the day, she pretends it's all nightmares and goes being the vivacious child she is. At the same time, each evening she is scared sick and one time she really gets sick. At the hospital Lolita realizes she will die if she continues with Humbert and calls Quilty to 'get her out'. We get to see what happened in Quilty's mansion and how Lolita tries to get help from the staff but they all just ignore her, she's shocked to see that even female stuff members only care about money and ignore the terrible things that happen in there. She still wants Quilty but he's only interested into making porno movies with her so they have a fight and she escapes. We cut to the present how she met her husband and how he seemed like this night in shining armor to save her but reality of poverty kicks in and Lolita's pregnancy makes her realize how she wants better life for her baby.

@@Petbootique I'm a bit daft and definitely missed the mark here. What is that last bit about lions and jelly meant to imply about HH's character?
@g.h.lovecraft40974 жыл бұрын
@@Petbootique Okay, so I just wrote a whole thing and lost it. I'm gonna retype but try to keep it short this time. If I'm understanding correctly, what that meant is that HH has romanticized himself as a vigorous 'lion' while in reality he is an infinitesimal, microscopic organism like that of a blob of jelly. I definitely agree, HH has a nasty habit of romanticism but doesn't only project his delusions onto poor Dolly but himself and his world also. (It seems the only thing he clings to is his ego, really.) He grows very frustrated when his projections of grandeur crumble and he sees situations for what they really are (as much as a deranged man like him can, at least) like when he sees that his America is actually quite 'boring' among many other negative descriptors. He describes himself with what reads like contradicting statements but actually they are all apart of the same illusion ("handsome" and "intelligent" yet "rotting" and "pentapod monster.") that contribute to this idea of a powerful, intelligent man having an unfortunate dark secret, that, he relishes in hiding "very well." He attempts to construct a victimhood for himself but it's painfully obvious that it's apart of his narcissism, while in reality, he is just a shallow germ. I think my favorite aspect of the novel is that Dolly herself never tells him THAT, but does refer to how he destroyed her whole life. She blames his actions and never really attempts to attack his character, yet the narrative makes it painfully clear how shitty Humbert is. Nabokov doesn't even have to use the words, you just read between the lines and 'pathetic' comes to mind. Great writing. That was my experience at least. Thank you for explaining that bit, I was having trouble understanding, but it was very thought-provoking.

@@swagbeast6944 it doesn't glorify pedophilia. It's a movie from the point of view of the predator, or else Humbert. Obviously he sees everything as a love story but there are few scenes where you can see Dolores is in actual pain from it. Humbert sees everything as a sweet love story, the story of his dreams, but in some parts you can see he also regrets everything and feels like a monster for manipulating Lo. There's a way more deep meaning to this film that everybody gives off, look at the book and the film twice.

@samantha: it would be very interesting, in fact! I hope they do !! it would be interesting a new movie that tells the story from the point of view of lolita! but I must say that in this film, the character of lolita is not neglected at all ... it outlines very well .. she is a very temperamental girl, sanguine, fiery, curious and with a strong will. she also has a conflictual relationship with her mother with whom she also establishes a certain competition. she is also quite opportunistic, she uses seduction to achieve her goals as an adult woman and is very precocious in this. in this film I would not identify her as a victim ... the only time she reveals her weakness is when she cries for the death of her mother or when she has those moments of depression, which humbert does not seem to understand or is indifferent to ... this is one of my favorite movies, i find it shot very well, the music is wonderful and as for the actress who played lolita for me she should have won an oscar, because i found it absolutely perfect, as well as beautiful

@@annalou9176 Even if they've made the movie showing her point of view, and it showed that she had fellings for him it would still had a story about a pedophile abusing a child, because Humbert took avantage of the fact that Dolores had "daddy issues" because she didn't had a father. Plus a child does not know what "falling in love is" because their brains aren't fully developed (Yes, even at age 15).

I really feel sorry for the character Humbert. His character makes me feel sad when I watch this movie, this movie really touched me with many emotions like you know you will never get that person, even though that person is right in front of your eyes. She is so beautiful and you just want to look at her and never want or let anyone hurt her. Because you know her feelings are temporary and youthful, and you know that one day she will leave you, so you want to tie her to you. And then Domi's acting so good and natural it's a shame she wasn't a star

why do you feel sorry for a pedophilic man who seems to be well aware throughout the movie that what he's doing is wrong, yet still does it, with a 14 year old girl who can only turn to a dangerous grown ass man.

The author said his book was inspired from a true story. From what I can remember an old man caught this 12 year old girl shoplifting and said if she didn’t come with her he would tell the authorities. Being naive she went along with him and was kidnapped, she wasn’t rescued until a few years later and later on died a car crash with a boy when she was 15. I believe the kidnapper also died in jail.
