BOOK A LIGHTHOUSE MENTOR
Are you or someone you know doubting Islam? Do you find yourself struggling to find answers? Do you have a hard time speaking to someone about Islam? Are you considering Islam but are unsure about certain concepts? Are you an activist, Imam or community leader who is unsure about how to handle questions related to science, philosophy, the Islamic moral code, etc.?
You are not alone. Over the course of the last decade or more there has been a rapid proliferation of content online and in academic institutions that has eroded the faith of some people.
Seeing the rise of this phenomenon , Sapience Institute is introducing a One to One mentoring service called LIGHTHOUSE.

Assalamu Alaikum to my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, and hello to everyone else watching this video. I've just finished watching the video and I wanted to share a summary of the key points discussed. In this video, Mohammed Hijab discusses naturalism, materialism, and physicalism, as well as the hard problem of consciousness and the differentiation between human beings and robots. He also delves into the philosophical implications of materialism, particularly in relation to morality, intentionality, and the limitations of a purely physicalist worldview. The video provides a comprehensive overview of these philosophical concepts and their implications. 00:03: Exploring Materialism, Naturalism, and Physicalism 00:07: Discussion on materialism, naturalism, and physicalism in relation to consciousness and AI. 03:16: Differentiation between ontological and methodological naturalism in scientific approaches. 05:56: Understanding the Difference Between Methodological and Ontological Naturalism 05:58: Demarcation between methodological and ontological naturalism is crucial in science. 06:00: Methodological naturalism allows for scientific inquiry without commitment to metaphysical naturalism. 06:45: John Lennox highlighted the distinction between mechanism and agency in evolutionary biology. 11:50: Exploring Different Types of Materialism and Positivism in Philosophy 11:51: Materialism asserts a knowledge gap between physical processes and subjective contributions. 12:00: Different types of materialism include eliminative, functionalism, and emergent materialism. 16:09: Positivism in philosophy emphasizes the principle of verification for meaningful statements. 17:41: Logical Positivism and the Evolution of Scientific Method 17:41: Logical positivism rejected non-measurable concepts in science, leading to a shift in scientific thought. 21:56: The scientific method is an assumption of science, not a discovery, evolving through history. 23:36: Exploring the Nature of Ideas and Consciousness 23:36: Abstract ideas are not physical and cannot be empirically proven. 24:16: Logical positivists' views on consciousness and materialism are discussed. 28:25: Descartes' dualism theory and the separation of mind and body are explained. 29:28: Exploring Philosophical Theories on Existence and Consciousness 29:31: Descartes' 'I think therefore I am' concept challenges existence doubts. 32:07: Different philosophical theories include dualism, materialism, and idealism. 34:55: Science struggles to explain first-person subjective experiences with third-person methods. 35:20: Challenges in Understanding Consciousness and AI 35:20: Challenges in explaining first-person experiences and the existence of consciousness. 35:56: The limitations of science in explaining emotions and subjective experiences. 40:41: Debating the possibility of consciousness in AI and the nature of human consciousness. 47:07: Challenges of Materialism and Morality 47:15: Materialism cannot explain consciousness due to its third-person nature. 48:00: The replacement of cells challenges the idea of a consistent self in materialism. 49:24: Materialism struggles to justify morality, leading to potential inconsistencies in beliefs. 53:00: Debunking Morality Illusion in Materialism and Naturalism 53:04: Morality is considered illusory in materialism and naturalism. 54:12: Materialists struggle to explain morality without a priori distinctions. 56:12: Understanding distinctions in materialism aids in addressing moral arguments with atheists

The criteria for success in Islam are divided into two things, namely: 1. Success in the world 2. Success in the afterlife In conclusion, Allah SWT instructs his people to try harder in the world because the revolution will not happen without effort. I can give examples of successful figures in today's world. 1. Khabib Nurmagomedov 2. Mohamed Salah 3. Irfan Hakim 4.Raffi Ahmad 5.Jusuf Hamka Wealth does not make them negligent, instead they are closer to Allah, loving family and parents.

I am not sure I understand your point.are you saying the success in dunya is equal to success in akhira? Because that's not how Islam is... Islam teaches us to work hard in this life and become successful TO SERVE our Akhira. So intentions matters... And te fact that Islam is a way of life matters... If someone desires success in business, they must do their best to implement shariah compliant finance transactions. Praying. Or bring close to family, parents. Is not enough... If someone seeks to be a successful athlete, then they must use intend to use their platform for message of Islam... Praying is not enough From your list, I only know of Khabib N. who is like this. May Allah (ﷻ) reward him for his hard work.

@Akh1990 i agree-- i replied to that brother with the same thing. If you become rich, there is more burden on you-- you have to make sure your wealth is halal-- so you must avoid Riba+ increase your Sadaqah. So success in this world and success in the akhira ARE NOT 2 halves of the same coin. Or if you become famous, you must use your platform to promote Islam like Khabib N. . Being nice to your family or merely praying after attaining success is not enough. You are required to do more to serve Islam so that you may attain success in Akhirah

Materialism and Physicalism: Everything in this world can be explained through physical processes. Or there are only physical things that exist in this world- there is no room for supernaturalism or divine powers . Further types of Materialism: I)Eleminative : eliminates anything other than what is material ( usually reply that we do not know yet ) II)Emerging : consicouness emerges thru material world III) reductive : admit there is a knowledge gap between physical processes/subjective experiences and our consciousness so if you are a materialist , you dont have access to morals- how will u put it under a microscope? so there cant come a person who is a positivist or materialist and attack islam on moral grounds- how dare he? positvist to him morality is meaningless because it can not be measured for a materialist he can say subjective morality but how can he verfiy it - how can it be as real as the physical processess in the world . Naturalism (David papineau) i- **Ontological/metaphysical naturalism:** nothing nonphysical can intervene in the physical world Every thing in this world can be explained through physical processes and supernatural things don't exist. ( they deny the supernatural - obv he is an atheist) ii) **Methodological Naturalism** Scientific/physical experiments can be done or in other words scientific methods can be used *without putting God/supernatural beings into this discussion* ( - you dont have to be an ontological naturalist in order to use methodological naturalism/ do science ) -science was referred to as *natural philosophy* Logical Positivism: Anything that is not verified empirically is ( measurable ) meaningless. replying to this^ : this sentence itself cant not be verified empirically , hence it is false ! (this philosophy has already been dealt with but good to know so you can refute easily when someone presents this- the founding fathers softened their position or abondoned this method aslan) -scientific method is presupposed by science , not discovered by it -theories must be falsifiable - must be able to disprove it- if not then it is not scientifically rigorous Dualism (Rene descartes) : conciousness is separate from body i think therefor i am - the only thing you cant doubt is existence but i mean if someone is hallucinating they also know they exist - thats the most fundamental thing Mind and body are distinct and separable. *science is a 3rd person enterprise mind and body are different b daleel every cell of your body gets replaced so you are technically a diff body / Ship of Theseus so basically ; materialism = everything is physical dualism = mind & body are separate idealism = everything is in the mind ( shabah solpcism which says we live in matrix) syntax : the words u use semantics : the meaning you convey , what u intend when a robot says i love u it is different than when i say it robot has input ( binary computer) we have an **intentionality** but a robot can never have an intention because it can not generate it autonomosly , it will always need an input and churn out an output but this intentionality is an aspect of consciousness

I don't think you can refer to the robot code as input when talking about AI. The input would be a learning set e.g. the alphabet if your training it to recognise the characters. Similarly humans have inputs which are the senses.

If you suggest that neurons cause consciousness then we should be able to pinpoint the how? Not only that, but we should be able to produce consciousness ourselves if it is only physical material and we should be able to recreate life if it is a physical substance that could be pointed to and manipulated, just like all other physical matter.

Just wondering what everyone thinks about what happens to people who have had a corpus callosotomy and seem to have 2 consciousnesses afterwards. Here is a 5 minute video that explains it and shows some examples of it. Now just to add a bit more to the video, there was a guy who was beating his wife while with the other hand trying to stop himself from beating his wife. There is also a person who one side of the brain is atheist and the other side theist. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZe8k5qapJ2YY5o So my question is to anyone who is not a materialist. How do they explain what happens to people who have had a corpus callosotomy?

@@furioustacowarrior1489 >>It could by just a part of your entire consciousness. like that your entire consciousness is made out of different parts and not all of them can be expressed by your body…by doing the surgery it brakes the physical barrier allowing the other part work. I don’t think the vid says anything about the other part having. Beliefs…idk"" The example of the guy beating his wife with one hand and trying to stop himself with the other and the atheist one side and theist on the other are not in the video. That is why I said now just to add a bit more to the video. Please explain how one soul has this conflict only after that operation is done? That makes 0 sense that 1 soul with disagree with itself. makes perfect sense if consciousness is just brain processes and the cutting of that wire between them stops the communication between them.

@@furioustacowarrior1489 >>second we don’t even know fully know the other side even in the video it was being speculative"" You did not see each side get asked its favorite color and and each side giving a different answer? You did not see where he grabbed a snack bar and the other hand slaps it out of that hand and grabs a different one? These are affects of split brain patients. Guy won the nobel prize for his research on this. >>you are a physicalist you have the hard problem of consciousness…"" Consciousness is from the brain, that is simple. Ever seen consciousness without a brain? If you are a substance dualist, you have the problem of explaining this, it makes perfect sense from the consciousness is from the brain, makes 0 sense is consciousness is from a soul.

@@furioustacowarrior1489 >>I should have typed that sentence better….I meant is that side Able do think like or follow the same logic as the other side…"" It pretty much seems like it but there are some things that are only able to be done on one side, like verbal speech for example. >>The question is how from a physicalist standpoint."" ????? By evolution of the brain. Chemical and electrical impulses running through neurons. >>See, how do you see consciousness…consciousness isn’t a physical thing you can’t see consciousness."" I cant see air but I can see the affects of air. I cant see energy but I can see the affects of the energy on matter. I cant see consciousness but I can see that people act consciously and are self aware. I can tell you have a consciousness as you are responding and I am pretty sure you can think just like most other people can. Obviously I dont mean visually see it. I will rephrase the question. Have you ever perceived something without a brain being conscious? >>It would if you were able to show or logically explain how consciousness can arise from non living things like atoms etc.."" Evolution of the brain as its beneficial to survival, chemical and electrical impulses using neurons. Let me turn this on you. Please explain how the soul works and give us consciousness? I want to know the processes and give me usable information, can you? >>As of now brains are the only thing that can express consciousness in the physical world but that doesn’t mean a brain is necessary…depending on your view…."" Ummm pretty sure it give a lot of probability that yes a brain is necessary for consciousness.
