The new metal detectors at all Broward public high schools caused chaos on the first day of school Monday, with long lines frustrating students and parents.

I went to school in the late 90’s. When a major incident occurred, clear/mesh see thru backpack were implemented. But since enough students DIDNT COMPLY, then the use of bags were forbidden during the school day. We had to carry it all and make frequent trips to our locker. Since it was prior to the smart device era..I used to play games on my gameboy color when appropriate.🤷♂️ Then Columbine happened and a bunch of fools around the city would make prank phone calls from the pay phones at the school and ruin the school day with the staff implementing safety measures and the police doing their investigations at various schools….then all the pay phones were removed. When a teacher tried to take my phone they got threatened with legal action by my dad and his doctor. Also the phone i had at the time was government issued so there's that. But there might be other cases similar to mine and they need to have a policy for that or lawyers might go to extremes.

In high school we had metal detectors for like 2 weeks because of a rumor that someone from another school was going to go around shooting students. Note no shooting at that high school has ever happened to date. With the security I would end up missing half of first period and my high school has a small population compare to other schools like my graduating class was of 111 students. Many kids just tell the teachers they don’t have phones for this reason. It’s stupid and with laptops having messaging/calling capabilities anyone who wants to be distracted during class is going to be cellphone ban or not. I’ll also add that in college phones are out 25/8. Teachers don’t care as long as you’re cool with whatever grade you get at the end of the semester. Dress codes are non existent as well. A lot of the high school “rules” are for show and don’t apply in the real world which means teachers could be focusing time on policies that actually matter like educating
