If you watch closely, you can see that Greg Morris who plays Mr Peters is trying not to laugh for real when he hands the the tray to Rob. THAT's the hallmark of a truly funny sitcom scene!
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 Жыл бұрын
Totally in character, however. The Greg Morris character knew full well that Rob was making a ridiculous mistake. The natural reaction would have been to try not to laugh too hard. Later on in the scene, Rob asks him sheepishly, "Why didn't you tell me over the phone?," to which he responds, "And miss the look on your face?"

What truly wonderful acting and writing. One sees in the sitcoms of that era how fully human the characters were, as much so as would be in a realistic drama. I'm afraid something has been lost since then as today the acting style leans toward a kind of cartoon reality, you know, with parody like comedic exaggeration. The Dick Van Dyke cast were people you felt you could really get to know...The bond between the audience and the characters at that time must have been much stronger...

Well said! With Rob and Laura and even other characters on the show we knew something about their lives before. They were believable characters. I've seen some sitcoms here and there where people sounded like they were just saying what was memorized, not really talking. The people on the "Dick Van Dyke Show" were people you could have met in real life. Maybe not quite as much but I also found the characters on "Roseanne" to be very much like people from my own life.

The studio moguls feared about the outcome when the idea was originally pitched to them but Producer Sheldon Leonard (that bartender Nick in It's A Wonderful Life) convinced them that there would be absolutely no offense to the black people in the storyline, but quite the opposite, the joke is on Rob Petrie's character. Thanks to Tubi I am able to watch all 5 seasons of this great show, not only was the writing superb and the pacing sometimes at a manic hilarious level but also Dick Van Dykes dancing and physical comedy was the best I have ever seen, much better and inventive than John Ritter on "Threes Company".

I think the funniest one was when Rob thought Laura was an alien and she come out the closet on a million nuts. ahahaa OMG that is funny just thinking about it, then she had her back to him and said I can see you because she was supposed to have eyes in the back of her head. THAT was too funny.

I actually found this show by accident. I don't remember anybody in my family, not even my Dad, watching the reruns. I didn't see this show till Nick at Nite in the early '90s. Fortunately, at the time I was watching Bullwinkle every day right before NAN and oftentimes I'd be too lazy to get up and I'd watch Get Smart too, and after that would be Dick Van Dyke. Which in turn led to me watching the Mary Tyler Moore show too!

And this 1963 was before the civil rights/voting rights acts of 64-65. Leave it to those crazy liberal new York Jews to show a well dressed well spoken middle class black family to millions of viewers who had never seen blacks like this before. I always look at old films and clips in the context of the times they were made. Beautiful
@shaneturner500

I am afraid you may be mistaken. It was quite rare in the day for a black, or any, person not to be well dressed and decently educated. Even musicians like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Chuck berry, and virtually all the rest always looked immaculately dressed in proper suits. Bad dress and lack of education was frowned upon from what I can see, because they viewed it as tantamount as going back to slavery. Education was very different then. Education began to decline in the 70s. Until then it was a sad thing for a person to be ignorant. Even the ghetto gangster moniker wasn't prevalent until the 80s when rap made it popular. Before that, gangster meant mob. To be quite simple, before the late 60s it was pretty much wierd to not be dressed in a suit on a regular basis, just like the hundred years previous. Casual and blue collar clothes had its place. My information may be horribly wrong, so if you find any discrepancies within my comment, please let me know. Other than that, your marvel is very much appropriate. According to the creator of the dvd show, Carl Reiner, the dvd show was the first to say the word pregnant. The show is a classic.

+Matthew Coyne I agree with you in that back then Americans did NOT view the average Black couple as equals, as proudly seen here I believe that is also what you are implying The writers were showing that a Black couple can be the same as the Petres and that they were welcomed into their home as if it were common to have middle classed Black families visiting whites in a white neighborhood

The Dark Angel this was new York City, not Georgia. In new York City in the early sixties, the Bronx was more diverse, segregation was almost non existent with the exception of restricted country clubs and incorporated prefab areas like Levittown, and even the Democrats saw the blacks as equals. It is essential to understand that segregation was mainly a southern problem, as the south were the ones defending slavery with a childlike manner. While racism was prevalent, new York in general was and is extremely liberal. So it is of no surprise to me that the dick van dyke show, a new York show, showed a black family as equal to the petrie family.
@thejupiter2574
@thejupiter2574 8 жыл бұрын
***** segregation was not just a southern problem or should i really say discrimination you are wrong democrats in the 60's didn't see Blacks as equals, they were still fighting for rights in different ways and still discriminated against even at the voting poles many instances. you speak from what you know in the large cities like NY that have melting pots of over crowded people's thrown together I am speaking about all the other cities and towns and in the 60's in most places you did not find a Black well educated middle class Black family in or near a White middle class neighborhood Blacks certainly were not making enough money to be in that economic bracket ALSO in my reference should have been that the representation of educated non stereotyped Black people was virtually non existent on American TV cept for maybe Bill Cosby on I Spy who recvd tons of bigoted hate mail each week and Nat King Cole

From the opening episode of season three, "That's My Boy??" [September 25, 1963]; Greg Morris is the father. Executive producer Sheldon Leonard and producer Carl Reiner had to convince CBS to let them film this climax, because the network was wary of how viewers might react to the "surprise"....
