There's so many long time beginners I've noticed. I've been at it nonstop for 2 years and I'm definitely in the early advanced stages

That’s exciting that you’re progressing so quickly! Thanks for watching the video 👍

In my early 20s I started gigging every weekend. Worked in the local scene non-stop for 25 years until covid hit. All I ever did was prepare for the next gig. If I didn't need to learn any new material, I didn't touch the thing. Music became a job and all that motivation and determination to get better got tossed out the window. Fast forward to today, and after 35 years of playing, with easily $100k worth of high end gear and equipment, I suck balls. I almost fear being placed in a situation where I need to play. People will think I'm full of shit if they didn't know me personally and that I actually "was" a player at one point in my life.

Wise advice, Rusty. I am 9 months into learning and realised that equipment is not necessary. Now playing and not even struggling to reproduce others music. My fun music is better

There are a lot of channels on KZbin where the guys are middle aged and they've got gear out the wazoo, but their playing is relatively mediocre. Personally, I believe that some guys chase gear because it (consciously or subconsciously) gives them the idea that spending money is a substitute for practicing. "It's not my playing, this amp just doesn't have the sound I'm chasing" or "I'd nail this solo if I just had a better guitar with better playability and lower action." It's always the gear's fault for why they're not where they want to be.

Well said Tony! I am guilty of being obsessed with gear at times myself. But I definitely love to play the guitar more than chasing the gear! Thanks a lot for checking out the video.👍

In the video, I said that many long time beginners spend more time searching for gear than actually playing the guitar.

Do you start learning to play songs . or do you focus on techniques.?
@rustysguitar1Ай бұрын
Actually both. Learning songs is important but learning the techniques, note names and the basic theory concepts that go with the song is the most important. It’s not an easy task but it will make you a great guitarist. This is what I teach in most of my videos. Thanks for checking out the video and keep working on it 👍
