2021 wasn't my best year to be honest because i kept feeling underaccomplished, i started falling behind on grades and I kept comparing myself to people who had achieved more than me at a younger age. But the best highlight of 2021 was finding your channel in October. The streams, Why I Work So Hard video and How I Studied For 12 Hours A Day video re-enflamed my passion of tech and finance that had developed mid-2019 and had been drowned by the start of 2021 out by burnout, overly ambitious goals and a fixed mindset that I already was smart. You said one of your goals was to help people by showing what skills you need to be the best of the best and you've helped me by doing exactly that. Looking forward to any future vlogs/streams my guy :]

My shift to minimalism was also a fundamental internal shift. I dealt with a lot of inner work, kinda like therapy, and realized I don't need all the stuff I was gathering. I realized the stuff I had was a safety net which was actually holding me down and preventing me from transforming into a new, better me. Loving these vlogs bro, all the best.

I think that minimalism is a bit overrated, and recently it became "trendy", being a minimalist is a good thing but i don't like the idea of being a 100% minimalist because some stuff bring you joy even if you don't need them, old trophies, antiques, paintings, papers and books, it all add value joy and beauty to your place, at the same time making the things you use less can make your life much more easier, umm so you gotta balance that out

As a practicing minimalist, or I try to be, I notice how social media or pop culture media uses the term minimalism different or I'd say toxic in a way it become another form of consumerism. In pop culture theyd define minimalist as someone who has their lifestyle to look elegant or monochrome or having minimal decor; people would now then consume alot of those things but this also where the pressure comes from. minimalism isn't supposed to be like that, it's about sustainability and consciousness and growth. it's a reminder that to be conscious of what we put out in our environment, of what we take or do is also a way of looking out for the people around us. it's about making conscious decisions by asking to yourself "do I need this" or "do I need to buy more" "do I have to have this"- it's also dwelling onto quality over quantity mindset. I also do think this type of lifestyle shouldnt make you feel pressured or restricted, if you think minimalism doesn't aligned to you yet, maybe try reading about essentialism. I also suggest watching Matt D'Avella, he's a minimalist KZbinr. Hope this helps minimalism is quite a heated topic btw hahaha, also you don't have to throw all of your stuff, then youd consume more then that discloses the idea of minimalism, it's really more on avoiding the unnecessary stuff. :) I hope uni is going well! Can't wait for your next vlog :D

In high school I got really into minimalism and read the same books you're reading now. However, as you talked about, it requires an internal drive in order to truly detach your sense of materialism. For me personally, as I began to immerse myself in minimalistic content, I grew overwhelmed with the loads of stuff surrounding me. I grew tired of all the things cluttering my room and this motivated me to get rid of what didn't bring me joy. I recommend finding sources of inspiration that encourage you to declutter. As for buying new things. I once heard some good advice that said you should only buy something new if it removes a negative from your life, not just builds up a positive.

@@Rie_Bot No. Any relationship is meant to be mutually beneficial.
@bernakulieva85172 жыл бұрын
@@ethanjsc Hey Ethan 😇 normally I do not interact with people on YB unless it bothers me or unless I have the feeling that I need to explain myself (this is the case) because I believe (this is an opinion) that most people have not the right mindset (yeah I konw I am a little bit straightforward). The reason I apply this method on people is because "I do not accept any bullshit in my life.~ BK" I choose to be happy and I choose to not feel bad nor guilty when I decline politley someones friendschip or any kind of relationship. Because I believe from the bottom of my heart (and experiencing a lot of bullshit) that a relationship, no matter what kind of a relationship, should be mutual beneficial. If I give 100% of myself and the person in front of me doesn't... the time that I have , the life that I share and the love that I give are precious to me and I don't want to have regrets and complain to myself that I should have ended things sooner. Put value into yourself. And love yourself before you even try to love someone else or before you accept someone into your life. So be a little bit selfish because being selfish doesn't mean that it is a bad thing. Sometimes we need to be selfish in order to make the right decision. Lets say there is this young man who wants to be succesful, and he works every single day very hard to achieve his dream. This young man is very dedicated and ambitious about his dream. But his friends aren't. They don't work as hard as this young man does. Instead they prefer to go party, and to live their daily live. I hope that you can see what I am trying to say and that you can see that both parties involved are not on the same level of mindset. So that's my reason why I said what I said. God, I can't believe I've typed so much😂. But don't get me wrong: I totally understand why you are reacting that way, because I would have probably said the same thing 2 years ago. I wish you a nice day Ethan, and ofcourse for anyone who is reading this🤗

not a minimalist by any means but when I do "spring cleaning" and go through my things I ask myself "Have I used this in the past 6 months?" and "Did I miss this thing?" If the answer to the first question is yes, then it stays because I use it frequently enough. If the answer is no but I have missed it, I try to carve out a space for it where it can be used or admired more often. And if I haven't used it or missed it that much, I make plans to donate/sell/recycle.

I feel you on the minimalism. I used to have things spilling all over my room and I let go of a good majority. I just kept thinking how hard it would be to uproot with everything I own. HOWEVER, the intrinsic need for me to BUY BUY BUY comes back and end of every day, I'm closing 50 tabs of things I want to buy. To help combat that, I started focusing on budgeting using Dave Ramsay's method of cash envelopes aka yoink money out of your account and set irl mini savings accounts for specific needs (events, eating out, new car, makeup, etc) to prevent impulsive swiping because it's another ball game handing over a wad of $200 vs swiping. It's also fun to see money accumulate for those specific wants/needs. I have 3 different shopping savings: Fashion (frivolous spending), Needs (replacing clothing items I use everyday), & Crafting (all my creative ventures) & if I don't have the cash in those envelopes, I don't buy it. Lessens the guilt of overspending/giving time to really consider "do I REALLY want it?" And often times, I don't and social media told me I wanted it lol. I still have to fight with it, but new items will never make me truly happier. I'm sure it's stemmed from growing up poor & never being able to own anything nice and cool and overcompensating as an adult, but dat innerwork? Necessary to move onto better things 👉😎👉

Oh Lord - Sorry for rambling: I definitely struggle with the way I keep my possessions, like when I go to stores I buy things impulsively just because I want them. I’m also a materialistic person and at times I don’t mind it. I need objects and things to make my happy and it’s hard to feel good without them. I always try to put myself first, and assess why I want something before I get it. Like why do I want this new iPad? Because it’s a pretty color, or because it’ll help me with my school work? Well can’t I just use the computer I already have? What’s wrong with it? Why do I need a new shirt? There’s nothing wrong with the shirts I already have. The shoes I have take me everywhere, so unless there falling apart there’s no need to replace them. Also I try not to think superficially about things too often. Sometimes I buy candles because their a pretty color even if they don’t smell good, then I think to myself, do I really - truly want this candle? If I don’t get this candle - will I drop dead? If so - then I’ll let myself buy it - if not, I can go on without it.

some people commented here on their approach of minimalism and it's actually interesting to read cause it just holds different value for each of us depending on our lives so i'll take part in that, too D for me it's a lot about honesty and self-awareness i keep things that are not 100% useful but they bring me memories I truly do not want to ever forget and I also got rid of something useful just because i didn't have any positive connection to it learning to listen to myself in this way was a bit of a process and that's the best thing it gave me i guess the overall goal for me was to be able to maintain my surroundings easily whilst being naturally grateful for having what i have so i didn't gave up on joy that things can give you from esthetic or other reasons but i carefully weigh whether the source of it is 100% connected within myself and if i even want to be someone who uses/likes this piece of matter

hey james, just wanted to say i've considered myself a minimalist for a few years now, but it's very stressful to focus so hard on "man i can't be a minimalist till i get rid of all my stuff". instead i like to think of it as an ongoing process, or like a mindset more than anything. slowly i sold things i didn't use or need, and when i do buy things, i like to really think about whether it'll benefit me. that's it i guess. but it's been enjoyable for me, i like to think of it as a method to achieving mental clarity, because my mind is so cluttered all the time. so many things i want to do/learn/try, and having excess "things" around, both physical things and mental things, prevents me from doing things that matter. ok cya. i love these vlogs, more pls

For the clock, it is indeed European adapter however if I am not wrong you cant do much if the voltage and the frequency are different in US. You would need to use a up converter(or down) if it is the voltage is low and also you would need a frequency modulator if the frequency is different. For up converter you would need a DC signal which you dont have from the outlet. In other words you need a full wave rectifier, so it might be a bit hard to make it work.

I really like 99% Invisible hosted by Roman Mars. I started hating owning things after moving to different countries a few times. I think I maintained the habit because as I got older I started to prefer buying from companies that are committed to social responsibility. I've read some minimalism-related books in the past. I thought they contained interesting experiences and concerns that didn't move me enough for lasting change. Minimalists seem to end up doing the same things for very different reasons & you just need to know if there's a compelling enough reason for you.

I was trying to shift to minimalism about two years ago, but it wasn't making me happy. I totally understand your feeling of not being ready to give up things that spark joy. For me, personally that was bad advice. I ended up miserable trying to part ways with my dearly loved hand made cups, each of them unique, and replacing them with white ones to achieve the 'minimalist aesthetic' etc. Or trying to sell my 80s motorbike from Czechoslovakia just because I didn't really have time riding it around at that time. I don't know if I came to the right conclusion, but right I now I do not think minimalism the way we see it portrayed online is for everyone. I'm very aesthetic-driven person and I choose the things to surround myself with with great care. I believe that if we surround ourselves with beautiful things that make us happy, like art etc, it heightens the quality of our life. To me, what was important was to lessen the dopamine response to buying all kinds of new stuff and just buy what was really important to me and of use. To live in a 'sterile' place wasn't making me happy , but I understand why and I'm happy to see that minimalism works for so many people and makes their lives better. Thanks for the vlog James!

ive also read the "life changing magic of tidying up" and the notion that we should only keep the things that spark joy as well as letting go of things that has already served their *actual* purpose really worked for me. I guess the reason why i accumulate stuff is bc when i want something but cant get/afford it yet, i tend to buy things related to that. I had to rewire me self to only buy what i actually want even if it takes longer (aka need to save more) 🦖
