Those 3 steps -- aviate, navigate and communicate -- are fundamental. I learned to fly light airplanes nearly 50 years ago and that was stressed by the FAA and every instructor I met. You didn't have to be a steely-eyed, square-jawed hero pilot to survive an emergency; you just needed to understand that best chance of survival -- and a surprisingly good one -- was to keep control of the airplane.

I honestly don't know why our airpower didn't make films like this back then. Other than the documentary type films. This is so beneficial in getting our youth involved back into air power. The more that try out, the greater the turnout. Thanks "Pail". I truly appreciate what you're doing.

Because we didn't have GoPros, mostly. I remember when NASCAR started allowing networks to put TV cameras in the cars in 1979, and the special video camera developed for it took up the entire passenger side of the cabin and weighed 50+ pounds. 😀 It wasn't until the early 2000s that cameras got small/light enough to stick in a cockpit without getting in the way.

Strongest cat shot I ever experienced was as a guest rider in the third seat in the "greenhouse" of a EA-3 Skywarrior (the Whale) around 1983 off the USS America CV-66. It was like being shot out of a canon. The Whale was the largest aircraft to do cats and traps in aircraft carrier history. Larger and heavier than the RA-5 Vigilante! When we banged off the cat, the pilot (a hell of a good stick) kept the aircraft at 100 foot altitude for several miles before climbing out. The trap was great fun as well. Right at evening time our first attempt was a bolter, and pivoting the seat, looking back at the receding bow of the carrier as we climbed out was a view you don't forget.. Our next time around was a successful trap. The Whale, when the main gear hit the deck, would bounce forward on to the nose gear, then bounce back on to the main gear. It was called "The Whale Dance." If you have never seen it, you would not believe it to be possible. The EA-3 Whales were abruptly retired from service soon thereafter when the fuselage of one split in half as the pilot was attempting an inside loop. One of the four Elint crew in the "bomb bay" survived bailing out and explained what happened. The slowest launch from a carrier was a deck roll down the angle deck in a C-1 Trader where the pilot lifted off at a really slow airspeed before we reached the round down. I was going home on emergency leave orders from the America to Roosey Roads to San Juan to New York after my father died while we were at sea on workups.

Pail, enjoyed the jam! My old flight instructor told me something similar three decades ago. With you it is charts, with me it was the pre take off checklist. Damn thing always got away from me after take off. After performing a clearing turn before “maneuvers”, that’s when it would fly back up in my face to say “how ya doin”. That’s when having the visor down on the brain bucket is a good thing. All the best! Mark- Fly Navy!

@@bmomjian Well, to be fair, we actually do take our time with emergencies, but that is on the ground, before there is an emergency. We memorize checklist, and learn what they actually mean. Smooooth….and hilarious! 😂 When I was still a student pilot, cleared for solos, I very confidently took off for some pattern work. I got about 200’ off the runway when my seat in the Cessna 150 slid ALL the way back! As I am 5’6”, I was completely stretched out trying to “Aviate”…which by some miracle, I was successful. Got my seat pulled back up. Went around the pattern and landed full stop. Told no one, but learned a very good lesson for preflight check of seat locked in position!

So I have a soft spot for America and more importantly the American people who unfortunately don't always present their best side because too the American speaking is the 1 in 100 who should NOT be allowed to speak. Don't panic every country does that including Australia. So I really appreciate American's like you who are far better at representing the America I know. Haha, nice one! Reminds me of something that would have happened to me on one of my quite the first glider solos, unless I denied it ever happening! During the initial climb under aerotow, I hit some (well known local) wind rotor hard and unprepared. I smacked my head against the canopy. Also, my water bottle and some assorted items launched straight up from the cockpit's side pocket, in which I totally did not stow such items. They ricocheted from the plexiglass and distributed themselves around my right shin area. Which you can't quite reach from the normal flying position, much less with your (normally) non-flying left hand. Of course, with any right rudder input, they progressed their way towards the pedal in question and its exposed linkage and cabling. I had to compromise between two options: preferring to fly left-toes-in, so that I could try to kick back the water bottle and the assorted items with my momentarily free right leg, and not to fly too... noticeably, as to not have the tow pilot to question my solo status. Great videos, thank you for making the stories behind available!

Yeah, all the stuff on the glare shield lands in your lap or goes to the back of the aircraft. We actually had control panels come out of our lower center console on the stroke of the hydraulic cats on the USS Randolph (CVS-15), go between the front seat aviators, past the two crewmen, bounce on an internal panel and wind up back past our lower radome and near the MAD boom controls (in an S-2E). The metal shop fashioned longer ears for equipment. Didn't have to do that when we went to the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) and the gentle steam cats.

I know of a guy in a helicopter that knocked his soda over while taking off. In the attempt to catch the soda, he struck the ground with his skid and bent it. Not something you want to explain to the CP, but hey he was honest.

I so miss my days on the boat. I was an Air Traffic Controller on the USS Constellation. Such great memories and when I wasn't working, you could usually find me on vultures row watching the action going on down on the flight deck and above the carrier.

Pail, nice one man 🤣! I saw that happen all the time with studs and it was always entertaining to see how they would react. I seem to recall saying on more than one occasion, “…I recommend flying your airplane first and getting us away from the ground.” We have speed cards on our airliner and occasionally they’ll come loose from their spot and fly backwards as we rotate 😆 always a fun time! Great vid man and uh…I saw nothing! 🤙🏼 Semper Fi!

"Deny it ever happened!" Fell outta my chair laughing!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for your service, Pail. And, "Anchors Aweigh" from the PROUD dad of a former Georgia Army National Guard Artilleryman. He originally wanted to join the Navy and serve on a battleship in the 16" gun turrrents. He's also a "retired" USNJROTC Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander (I've forgotten which) and was his unit's XO. I say he's "retired" because they made him graduate high school! See ya!

The name of this jam is really great and apt! 💯💯💯🔥🔥😂 It mirrors this Jam and your narration in it. They're both superfunny and hilarious, they couldn't get any better. 💛😂😂😂 I'm shaking my head and biting my lip...while laughing so sweet 💋💞💞 Thank you. 🍻 In my opinion, there should be much more views (also) in this jam! I don't get it why there isn't. I'll try to "help" algorithm a bit.

@GrowlerJams 50k per day? ~2000 times in an hour? It sounds impossible for me alone, sorry. But I'll try what I can do about it... I'll try. 😊 I was reading comments (the oldest are 11 months) on "See Why This PACKED Flight Deck Is So Dangerous". Two things came up in my mind. I've learned so, so huge from you. 💙 There are many things to be written down in the PD. I'm sure that in all Jams, also originals, have something new to add in the PD. A Big and Warm Thank You. 🤗 I hope you have a great week. 🌞

I'm so sorry that I'm giving up too soon on this 300k views "challenge". I'll own you around 299750 views. 😁 I don't like it at all to give up before the time is up or too easily, without trying my best and giving my all. This time it's just better to give up and "recharge my batteries" before a revenge on this or for a some other nice and new "challenge" or "task" on your channel. ❤ For continuing to do the PD, I'll need better batteries for me anyways. 😉💛 Have a nice weekend.

Great concentration. Pilots should have a 'critical list' of items that need action now - vs. others that can wait for later during each defined part of the flight. Thanks for posting - well handled.
