This is part two of the visit to Bordon and we go out on to the training ground to see how the Army carries out vehicle recovery. It was a great day and our thanks go to our kind host. In the part one video we have a close look at their collection of Recovery Vehicles

I did the abbreviated Armament Artificer course at Borden in 1956 and drove a Centurian over the course as part of that course. Tony.B 56:10

I trained as a gunfitter there in early 1958, did 6 weeks at the Command Workshop in West Derby, Liverpool and went with very little notice to Cyprus for nearly a year.

Hello Mike. My course at Bordon was the VM course. From Borden I was posted to Tripoli and served with 19 Armoured Workshops, 10th Arm'd Division who previously had been on Musketeer in Egypt. Later I went to 5 Medium Workshops in Tripoli District (Different shoulder flash) which morped into Station Workshops Tripoli in 1958. During my time with 19 Armd I was temporarily detached to to supplement the LAD at The Queen's Bays at Sabratha while they made the film No Time to Die starring Victor Mature, Antony Newley, Leo Genn and Bonar Colleano. Hello - I should think there's not much left to see at Bordon now. Went to Sidmouth some years ago now and passed what was left of Honiton Camp which wasn't much. Went about three years ago to the REME Museum at Arborfield but most of the stuff there was from the 1960's onwards - not from the time I was there. Believe all of that has now closed and moved to a former RAF base.

Hi Mike. I did basic training at Blandford and some years ago attempted to locate my old billet which was in the old Royal Naval Division lines, mine was Howe Line. I could not find the least trace of anything I recognised at all. I was only briefly at Arborfield (Depot REME) for the isue of tropical kit in October 1956 and subsequent demob in May 1958. Cheers. Tony

thanks Tony - I went to Honiton with a pal who I had met at college in Doncaster and we both got called up together. After our six weeks square bashing there he went to Blandford to train as a drill instructor and did all his NS there - he was called Maurice Watkinson. We got in touch again some years ago and still keep in contact.

I learned to drive a Centurion ARV at SEME Bordon in 1970. We then loaded all the Centurions onto railway flats for shipment to Israel. The British Army bought lovely brand new Chieftains. The vehicle being recovered here is an FV 432 troop carrier.Cheers! Pete ex-VMA, REME

Well thats funny. In Canada, our RCEME training school is CFB Borden. I always thought it was named after the parent ship but , apparently , it was named after one of our PM`s. Strange how things come together. Anyone else get pissed at people calling an APC a tank????

There's a big difference in weight between a tank and a 432 apc

It's not stealing! It's 'recovery' ;) If it gets a vehicle moving it's a job well done. There's some tough spots out on the area.

Strange enough for a modern Army,no one wear helmet. The only hope for trainees is the tedious "instructer" in camouflage fatigue who like so much stands beside the steel cables, will be soon wrapped in it.
