In order to raise profits and gain more revenue, Eric Bischoff and WCW decided to produce more monthly Pay Per Views during the mid 90s. One of these PPV events created by Bischoff was WCW World War 3.
The World War 3 match in WCW featured 60 superstars, 3 rings and only 1 winner. The huge battle royal, billed as the biggest battle royal in wrestling, sounded like a fantastic idea on paper. Superstars who entered the battle royal over the years include Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Sting, Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page, The Giant, Scott Hall and Macho Man Randy Savage.
So, how did it they turn out? This video takes a look at every WCW World War 3 match from 1995 to 1998.

A big problem with WW3 is that they made the first one so important. The first few Royal Rumble winners didn't get a title shot. The WWF had a few runs to make sure the match worked and worked out any kinks before making it the second most prestigious event of the year.

The mini-screens might work better now that most folks have big-screen TVs. Or if it's an online thing, they could maybe give fans the option to switch between views themselves, on-demand. And an overlay of all the wrestlers getting X'ed out as their eliminated might work as well (maybe like a border of thumbnails around the screen). Optional overhead views could help too.

World War 3 sounds great on paper but I agree it didn't work in practice. The Royal Rumble is great but I like Lucha Underground's Aztec Warfare best of all. You still start with two competitors and have wrestlers come out one-by-one at certain intervals, but it's not a battle royal. People are eliminated by pinfall or submission in the ring. It combines the cool parts of a multi-wrestler match (i.e. no DQs, constant action because wrestlers can rest while other people are doing big spots) with the storytelling possibilities of the Royal Rumble. It was AWESOME.

On one hand the 60 man battle royal was a good concept as it gave more stars a chance to get noticed and possibly earn a title shot. But to make it less confusing for live fans viewers at home and the announcers they should have started with 20 guys. Once 5 were left send out 20 more and again once 5 were left send the final 20 out. That would have given everybody one ring to concentrate on. Plus getting rid of 2 rings meant they could get probably another 4 or 500 fans in

WW3 would have worked if it started off as two individuals squaring off in each of the rings. These two wrestlers in each ring would fight it out for two mins.A new wrestler would enter the fray every minute or after an over the rope elimination. This wrestler would have a specific ring that they're assigned too. After the elimination of 15 from all three rings the remaining 5 from each 3 rings meet in the center ring for the battle of the final 15.The final 15 match is win by submission, pinfall, tko,or over the top.

You know I had another idea for AEW to use this for a Tag or Trios main event. If this was a PPV for a shot for the tag team or trios titles or win the titles it self if applicable. I would make a 6-12 team match using the three rings instead of a gauntlet or tournament. Just put 6 - 12 teams in one ring. You can start them all together at the same time or do it in intervals war games style. But the contest will be decided on pin fall and submission either on any ring or the ring where you originally started or the opponent your pinning or submitted originally started the match with. Which ever rules make sense or an interesting match is what I was thinking this morning. I think if AEW brings world war 3 3 ring concept as a PPV. They can do a lot of good stuff with it.

One huge ring would've been the smartest way to go. Intermission and have ring crew disable it back to one regular sized ring for the remaining matches or vice versa.

Failed to mention however that Hogan was supposed to be thrown over by the Giant but he himself changed it during the match and timed it perfectly to have himself pulled out just as Macho Man threw out One Man Gang. Giant was still green/new so of course did what Hogan told him to do.

The battle royal would have gone on for a *long time* with staggered entrants. Say 60s between entries guarantees at least an hour minimum. One way around that could have been to have pairs of wrestlers in each ring to start and proceed from there at 60s intervals. It did look crowded though we must admit.

WCW was far better than WWF back then. I did watch both but preferred WCW. I stopped watching about 2 months after WWF purchased ECW/WCW. I was not happy with the way they used any of the other wrestlers. Dudleys and maybe a hand full were alright in WWF. Rest were terrible there. It's a shame no one has come out with anything better.

Just to correct a detail, Hogan was the one who was boo'd and Savage was cheered. Hulk came off as a crybaby and this was kinda the start of the fans turning on him which would lead to him willing to turn heel and form the nWo.

It would have been so much better if they did 10 guys in each ring at the start. That way guys can do spots and people could actually pay attention. It would have been the same amount of wrestlers as the Royal Rumble, but the rings would be the difference

why they didn't have three different 20 man battle royals not at the same time. with a final battle royal puzzles me. Hogan tried to change the booking on the first world war 3 in the ring. Cnut Hogan tried to come champion when it was booked to be Macho Man.

maybe they should have done something like 3 qualifying battle royals where the final 5 from each would comeback for the championship 15 man battle royal. would have made it easier to follow idk.

It would easy for WWE to have one ring, 3 battle royals on the same night featuring the 3 seperate brands and all 3 winners go into a fatal 3 way on the same night. Piece of cake.

The thing is tho with a 60 man battle royal you really cant have a new entrant come down every 2 mins, it would take an hour and a half just to get all the entrants in.
