WCW World War 3 1997 took place in Auburn Hills, Michigan on November 23rd 1997. The event was headlined by the WCW World War 3 battle royal where 60 superstars (WCW and nWo) competed in a 3 ring battle royal, the winner of the World War 3 match would then receive a WCW Championship match at SuperBrawl VIII in 1998.
With the company looking ahead to the big Starrcade 97 show and the Sting vs Hollywood Hogan main event, the World War 3 match felt more like an afterthought. nWo guys Buff Bagwell, Scott Hall, Randy Savage, Curt Hennig and more are trying to secure that title shot in the event that Sting wins at Starrcade, while WCW guys such as DDP, The Giant, and Lex Luger want to earn the title shot to keep the title away from the nWo at all costs.
Other matches on the show include Ultimo Dragon vs Yuji Nagata, Ric Flair vs Curt Hennig and Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero.
00:00 - Intro
01:06 - Faces of Fear vs Glacier & Ernest Miller
03:03 - Disco Inferno vs Saturn
05:25 - Ultimo Dragon vs Yuji Nagata
07:53 - The Steiners vs The Blue Bloods
08:43 - Scotty Riggs vs Raven
11:27 - Steve McMichael Promo
12:01 - Steve McMichael vs Alex Wright
13:20 - Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio
15:49 - Curt Hennig vs Ric Flair
18:51 - World War 3 Battle Royal
24:27 - Final Thoughts / Credits

Curt Hennig didn't have that many great matches in WCW and even he and Bret Hart couldn't re-capture their old magic when they fought in early 1998. However, this bout with Flair is legitimately really solid and I like the fact he won without interference, even as a heel. I also quite enjoy his upcoming match with DDP at Starcade.

WCW's WW3 matches really suffered from the technology available at the time. They would have been so much easier to watch in the HD or 4K 16:9 widescreen of today. Three rings is just too much to fit into the SD 4:3 of 1997. A great idea and it would have been awesome for the crowd in the arena but yeah didn't translate well to TV.

I remember when I was watching through the Nitro episodes on WWE Network, at the time, they didn't have any Thunder or Saturday Night episodes at the time, but whenever I reached a point when an episode of Clash of the Champions, or a WCW PPV happened, I'll watch those. Always dreaded every time World War 3 event was coming up, because like you pointed out, very difficult to follow until they move the action to one ring. Hats off to you, did as good of a job recapping this as anyone could. Thank you.

Another awesome upload from the greatest wrestling channel on the planet! This was WCWs yearly equivalent to the Royal Rumble. The WW3 match, was such a clusterfuck, no one could keep up and there was no real stand out moments in the match, in the few years that they did host the PPV. Where as the Rumble was always entertaining. This was just a mess. Perhaps it was one of those match ideas which looked better on paper.

I thought the same thing too. Take this scenario: In the final moments the nwo eliminate Luger DDP giant and both Steiner's, this all nwo members. But forget that 59 we're accounted, so Hogan takes #60 just when the members eliminate themselves Sting appears as #60. Takes out and eliminates everyone with his bat. Hogan runs away Sting wins world war 3 and faces Hogan at starrcade. Nash competes still, Sting appearing at the end covers his ring rust and the bat is symbolic of two weeks earlier where he dropped it and they beat him down. He doesn't make the same mistake twice.

Go back to the beginning of this series, and it was just a basic move by move review. You get about 40 episodes in, and you start getting a bit more personality. I'm going to assume that's about when Jay Hunter started getting in your ear, telling you to let loose a bit. I watched every week, but after that point, man, the humor thrown in has made this must watch. Have about 10 channels that I watch every upload from, and this is one of them of about 1000 I'm subbed to. Just glad I know I have about four more years of this to look forward to
