Looking for sea shells at low tide on a Florida island is pretty spectacular. Looking for sea shells anywhere in Florida is pretty awesome, however islands are even more special and I'm always willing to try different places and different times to see what I'll find!
If you're thinking about taking this trip with Captiva Cruises, here is their website
captivacruises.com/
You can book online and in addition to a fun boat ride and time on the island, you'll learn about the area. Feel free to ask questions!

Thank you for giving us a little “beach time”. I keep a covered beach jar on my desk at work that contains sand, shells and a piece of seaweed from my favorite beach. I use it to relieve stress by taking a deep breath of the ocean/beach whenever needed.

Patiently waiting for your posting! So you had luck there! That water was to die for! it looked like you could walk out really far and still see the bottom. I am happy you got that alligator skin sand dollar, all those olives, pretty nice lightning whelks and a really good sized horse conch! Too bad it wasnt the big daddy but you did find the light olive which is super pretty with that sheen on it. Wow and some nice nutmegs of unusual size. I am happy you took my advice to check that island out but you really need to do a longer trip, go farther, cover more beach, the good ones were so far apart. Beautiful beach time watching the gulls play tag with the waves :)

Thank you for the video, prior to 2015 I visited Sanibel and Cayo Costa at least once a year, my fiance' passed away 2015 so I'm not really able to travel any longer. I live in cold Kansas City and am not excited about traveling alone... I wanted to say that Cayo Costa reminded me of the old Gilligan's Island TV show... like a deserted island. I gathered several cockle seashells as large as cereal bowls and used them to serve shrimp cocktail during my sister's birthday party. They were just perfect! Collecting seashells was my favorite hobby for many years. They are all so unique and gorgeous.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
What a fun idea - cockles can indeed make great bowls! It's ironic you thought the island was like Gilligan's Island. The tour was a "3-hour tour" and many other people mentioned the Gilligan reference too. Collecting seashells is good for the soul! Wandering around to the sound of the ocean, looking for beach treasures is the best. I thank you for taking the time to watch and to comment. I hope you choose to come along with me on future beach walks!

@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
It took me quite a while to really see the difference in those shark eyes. I needed to see a whole bunch of the shells before I could see that "dug out part" of the shell and finally had the "ah-ha" moment. Sanibel is August should be nice and sleepy still. You'll want to be in the water to find those shells and with the heat you'll probably want to be in the water anyway!

I am on the east coast and noticed a difference between 2 shark eyes. The differences in colour and shape are what I noticed. What I observed was that the false shark eyes are generally and the front of the false one protrudes more. I couldn't find an references to false shark eyes. Thanks for solving my mystery and affirming that I am not going crazy!

Get this, the biggest island has no beach! It's all mangroves and known for growing palms and mangos. Go figure right? I was in Florida on Christmas Day (we took a Christmas cruise with Royal Caribbean). We hopped a bus to Cocoa Beach to look for shells and possibly sea glass. The waves were high and the water cold and cloudy. But I went shelling anyway and had fun picking up some jems on the shore. I took some for home, but customs officials wouldn't let me take them on the ship. SADNESS! We are planning on coming back later in the year, so we will try again for treasures then.

Curious. I know there are some islands where you're not allowed to remove the shells (I'd still want to go find them anyway, even if I couldn't take them home) but I didn't know cruises wouldn't let you take them back on the ship. Happy New Year and thank you for your weekly videos. I’ve been wanting to leave a comment about the lettered olives. I was told on a shell tour by a shell guide that the lettered olive was named that not for the letters on them but for the letters they make in the sand. I meant to comment last week when there was a lettered olive doing just that in last week’s video. I could be wrong but that’s what I was told. Happy Shelling 😊🐚

I have never heard that about the lettered olive. Everything I've seen has indicated it's about the shell markings, but I like the idea that they make letters in the sand 🤗 Their shells are so beautiful and the live critters are so funny looking. I just love them!
