"CBT feels like fancy gaslighting"--oh my gosh, yes! That's how I've felt about it. Therapists in my past will be like 'tell yourself the thought is illogical' or 'remind yourself you're okay' when you feel pain. Like I know that already...doesn't take away the thoughts or the anxiety though, especially when it comes to pain management and trauma surrounding chronic pain. If you ever find a workbook (apart from the DBT workbook you used a couple years ago) that fits better with neuro-spicy peeps, please let us know!!! Wishing you all the best! from, a fellow spoonie

I don't know enough about CBT to know if it's fancy gaslighting, but this book sounds like it's 100% toxic positivity. Clearly, it's written by someone who doesn't have chronic pain or any actual neurospiciness. Thanks for letting us know about it so I didn't accidentally buy $25 worth of paper kindling for the campfire.

i’m a psych major and took a counseling class in undergrad. even just learning about CBT, i was like this seems like bs? i later learned that CBT can be super helpful for some people, but it often does nothing for people with autism and/or ADHD because the self awareness is too real. it’s been game changing for me to realize CBT doesn’t work for me and searching out therapists who will try different methodologies with me. on this same note, i absolutely can’t do mindfulness or meditation stuff because it literally makes zero sense to my brain, but i know people who it works for!

CBT did wonders for my spiraling thoughts. My therapists told me to focus on truths and really helped my social anxiety. But it makes no sense to me for her pain. Pain does not just go away. I can't think how CBT would help with that. 🤷‍♀️

Hello! Fellow autistic training as a therapist here! I have been incredibly keen to stay the hell away from CBT for the exact reasons you said in this video. It takes the overthinking we do already and warps it in just not a fun time. I'm hoping to train in PCT (Person Centred / Client Centred Therapy) because the whole point is that the client chooses the direction and all of the literature focuses on helping the client find the way that works best for THEM regardless of whether you as the therapist agree. It's a really challenging way of working on the therapist end, but as I've experienced it as a client too, it's great. Bonus points that PCT therapists are discouraged from giving advice unless the client specifically asks for it, and even then you have to be careful, so no unsolicited chronic illness advice from therapists is a win
@theotherveronica

also autistic psych professional here! i’m not in the clinical field, but i did take a counseling class in undergrad. i remember being confused about why CBT was such a big deal. i’ve always been far more intrigued by PCT. i’ve been in therapy since i was 10. when i was 18, my therapist died. after that, i never really found one that worked for me again. until recently! my new therapist takes a PC approach and in her words “is a passenger in my car” she says she’ll “give direction if i get lost or ask for help, but i’m driving .” i’ve really made so many breakthroughs thanks for her! i say all of this because i respect and appreciate all that CBT does for some people, but it’s crucial for those in the field to explore other ways to treat neurodiverse brains.

Sometimes I'll feel down on myself when I watch these vlogs because they're so high quality, and so well put together, but then I remember that I only started making content on KZbin two months ago and I'm already improving a lot, and comparison is the thief of joy!! Therefore I can enjoy Ally's vlogs, and still work on my own at the same time!!

CBT /IS/ FANCY GASLIGHTING!!! I highly recommend DBT books (Dialectical Behavior Therapy.) I don't know if there's one for pain, but it's essentially a little bit of CBT but mostly mindfulness. CBT never worked for me and neither did regular therapy. The only thing with DBT is it's a lot of work and practice, but worth it imo. Hope you find a book that works

Migraines are definitely not a "one size fits all" with pain. I sometimes get vertigo and walking would not be good advice, but sometimes I also benefit from physical activity. Its definitely a personal journey with pain and what each individual can handle and what actually helps. For me, one migraine attack can be better after hydration or food, others I get to the end of my list of "helps" and just have to endure until its over.
