I will categorically proclaim that Loop were one of very of the best psych bands of the mid-80's. they made psychedelia look and sound dark and heavy. Underrated.

this was the peak...loop always sounded like loop but this LP had the SOUND...honestly, a youtube upload is not going to give the same effect as the vinyl or even the CD...you can get LOST in this with the right source and equipment...trust me on that....this song especially, it is an orchestration of noise that is one of the top psych songs of all time...kinda sounds like an AM radio here on youtube thru laptop speakers %^)

I love when people try to put something into a genre or classify in a category when they weren't even around to hear it in the first place. No kiddies before KZbin, Spotify, Pandora, people actually read zines went to record stores and shows. We did our homework and didn't hit a button and say we were instant fans to earn street cred. We worked at out knowledge and were part of a scene. You posers! LOOP wasn't shoegaze. Fuck the bands that were in the so called shoegaze scene hated that bastard term! It was made up by the likes of Melody Maker and NME! Why all the categories? Can't you just say it's great music and go with it? LOOP are gods!

Day three, Reading Festival 1990. Two of us slept in a one-person tent and two of us in my 1976 Mini that was parked on an industrial estate nearby. I still remember the smell of my mate Mart's feet. The following year the big end of the same Mini went on the M4 down there and we were towed into Reading in splendour by the RAC. No shit.

Loop, Spacemen 3 were nowhere near the Shoegazing scene. They had their own Vibe going on and were more akin to Psych Garage punk bands of the 60's than the the likes of My Bloody Valentine and JAMC. Not that they weren't good, but I found Loop to be way above

the problem with shoegaze as a genre is there are about 3 bands in it that all sound different, and people's idea of shoegaze doesn't actually exist in any band that's why 'new shoegaze' sounds nothing like them.. This band are pretty post-punk(another stupid name that is too vague to mean anything), just immediately thought similarities with early Bunnymen, and The Wire...with a lot more reverb...first time listening though.
@palosverdes89059 жыл бұрын
jorgepeterbarton Lush?....
@sirperybLakeney9 жыл бұрын
jorgepeterbarton No, the problem is that 'Shoegaze' was not a genre or a 'scene'. Shoegazer was a term of abuse that was used by fans of people like the Mondays and the Roses for other indie kids regarding their miserable dancing style and general 'gooseberry at the school disco' demeanor. Fans of pre-Glider MBV would certainly be prime candidates for this, but all the stuff that lacked a funky backbeat could conceivably have shoegazers amongst its fanbase. I was apalled the first time I saw shoegazer listed as a genre on AMG (probably 15 years ago or more). The idea that 'Shoegazer' was a genre seems to have been created and perpetuated by AMG and subsequent music journos who apparently need labels to apply to create ludicrously small 'scenes' -well, you can never have enough half baked, ill fitting, generalizations can you.

Post-this psych-that shoe-you I'm telling you it all pisses me off the genres and classifications that are painted on with an awfully wide brush, when I go to AllMusic . com every artist I choose from hardcore punk , heavy metal and the newly revived psych-rock are all tagged POP , fuck pop and its fizz rather Fuzz , Pop Music is popular music IMO top forty even bubblegum, who dare I ask is the great Overlord that decides for all the sheeple what is what . I question . Shoegaze as I read some time ago , came about because the performers stared at the floor equipment (Fuzz and wha wha pedals) instead of dancing about like a Patsy .
@jorgepeterbarton8 жыл бұрын
percy blakeney yes, language evolves though and now no one uses it as an insult. Its used as a genre....and the only common denominator between those who argue about it seems to be MBV and a coupe of thmes valley bands that probably barely met eachother...definitely not a scene... But looking at lists of "best shoegaze" it comes to stuff being obscured by reverb nowadays, heck a recent pitchfork top 50 lists various bands I wouldn't call shoegaze...but then i'd mention bowery electric, loveliescrushing, and stuff from NYC after 'loveless' and someone would probably argue with me. Its kind of clear people have different ideas, quite often cocteau twins are described as some epitomy and loads would argue against that......... as with JMC etc. etc. whilst putting late ride albums that basically sound like oasis on it. Same with no-wave, post-punk, post-rock all have their obscurities of genre... trying to get some over-arching term to describe it all vaguely of this sector of music is one way to go but then like those before it would be used 'wrongly' again.

shoegaze, psych, garage, who cares what genre this is? genres are nothing but made up terms, anyway, and don't mean anything. loop might have a few things in common with, say, mbv or chapterhouse but they have their own sound that can't be categorized into any one genre, which is what makes them a great band.
