Pressure washing nearly 70 years of dirt, muck and oil off a Fordson Major E1A tractor. This tractor will soon be 70 years old so it deserves a clean !
Another old barn find but no need for a Will It Start this time as it actually does !
Is it worth saving ? Is it too far gone ? Watch to find out.

New to your channel, first thing you do is show me a Fordson Major. The first toy I ever paid for out of my own pocket was a toy version of a Fordson Major. To answer your question: Preservation, get it up to it's best, mechanically then preserve as much of that "patina" as possible. Oh and drive it around at every opportunity I got!😷😉👍

Nice work. Very interesting to see the vintage grime that accumulates. My preference on these old machines is to keep it as is with good mechanical conditions and safe operations. I agree with you on the rust - I'd try to stop it from advancing further but leave as is. To me a machine that gets restored loses its soul.

You spoke those words about the way it looks and history like moses reading the ten commandments. Couldn't of been any better, what a great moment. Looks good like that, never seen someone burn molasses off before that was gold. One good thing about pressure washing after its started and running is you can look at the whole machine thoroughly as you degrease and wash and look for other problems and flowering weeds as your washing. Great video enjoyed watching👍👍

This is why I love old tractors over old cars. They built the world we live in today and like you said, tell so many story’s. I’m actually in the process of restoring my great grandfathers 1951 Farmall cub that he bought new. If that was mine and I bought it that way, I’d preserve it the way it is. It’s only truly original once it looks too good to make better.

Good evening your Lordship, this tractor 🚜 the Fordson Major actually brings back some fond memories for me as I got to drive one ☝️ when I was at agricultural college at Hartpury near Gloucester back in 1986 and boy that was a very good tractor 🚜 to drive and thoroughly comfortable too, however my answer to your great question is that I would go with option B but the only thing that I would do is to give a clear coat spray over to keep it’s story for a long time and of course give the mechanicals a good going over, other than that I wouldn’t touch a thing apart from the usual basic daily routine stuff (oil, fuel, coolant).

Personally I'd restore the Major to her former glory , I used them in the sixties, we still had three of them right up to the late 70's but they ended their day as irrigation boom carriers don't know the correct name for them but they were like a massive helicopter rotor mounted on top of the tractor, none of them had cabs, so you had to wade through a foot of mud to climb on to the tractor to move it along another 150 yards or so to irrigate the next bit, I remember having mud on the foot plates above the height of both the clutch and brake pedals, keep up the good work, I'm learning a lot from you, thanks.

I love this old Fordson! It was my first tactor that I bought. It was Fordson super major -52. In the beginning a petrol engine in it but was converted to a diesel in beginning of -60. It was realy reably worked in all wether. Only one time the engine run away for me. It was the returnline from the injektors that have been a hoole and diesel ran down of the side of the aircliner and fill it up. Then it get diesel direktly in to the inlet and the engine start running in heavy speed. But the engine did not get eny damage! Keep going with the good work and hope to seen you soon!

Well this is a tough one m'lord, I fully understand everyone that think you should preserve it and let it keep it's rough but honest exterior, and I too think this approach has it's charm. However I am also a total sucker for full OEM restorations. I just love seeing old warn out equipment getting fixed up by loving and experienced hands (anything from an old rusty bench vice to clapped out tractors...). The worse off it is at the start, the more satisfying I find the end result (if it's done right of course). Main thing though is that it doesn't just sit in a hedge row rotting anymore, so a rough looking but well sorted piece of equipment that get some regular use is also very nice to see...

Have a 1958 major here on the farm. Been here from new and had 20 years off and now back to work for light duties. Kept original as every bit of damage has a story which the owner can remember happening. The restored shiny ones have their place and so do the honest working machines that tell their story. Yours looks perfect as it is. An honest hard working old machine

I love it the way it is , just go through it mechanically , check and service and enjoy its history. Maybe might just repair the original nose cone, weld in some repair patches, but wouldn’t paint it. And try find an original pair of head lamps for it , so the old girl can see. Possibly throw on a decent seat cushion? You do good work , all the best .

I love Fortson Majors! They aren't as common over here in USA however we do have them. Mine is a 1957 MKII. I absolutely love preserving patina it gives an old machine such a cool look that they have earned as you say. Unfortunately my major has already lost its originality years ago it was painted Ford white and blue and its got damage to the nose cone so my tractor will eventually get a restoration. However my B414 International will remain in its working clothes. Great video its nice to see others who appreciate original machines and preserving history

My uncle has a dairy in Modesto, CA. I spent my summers there as a teenager, free labor. He had a wash station set up and when there was any downtime, I was over there steam cleaning the equipment. He liked his equipment reasonably clean, for a dairy, and the tractors were pretty quick to clean since they got a cleaning at least once a month. The cow crap and dirt came off really easy and the oil/grease never got a chance to harden up over time. My youth, spent steam cleaning farm equipment. Justification for higher education...

Excellent video. Over here (USA), too many old original tractors got prettied up in the 35 years I've been alive in a substandard way. It's always good to see the tractors at the shows and auctions that are just simply honest. Those are the ones that get attention from the guys that grew up running them. I say bolster what needs it, fix the more annoying leaks, and enjoy it.

When I was a nipper my uncle had a Major that he used for odd jobs like collecting firewood, but I used to live for those rides in the link box, and he used to let me steer it on occasion. It must have made an impression as I went to work for my grandfather's agricultural engineering business when I was 17 and one of my first jobs was rebuilding the engine on a lovely old Major. Power washing customers tractors outside in the middle of winter was never a task I look forward to though. I think I'd have a go at repairing that nose as don't like razor sharp rusty bits, but it would be a bloody shame to bin it off for a better one and lose an original part that's been with that machine for the better part of 70 years.
