Join Andy Law & Loremaster of Sotek as they ride into the horrifying darkness that is Sylvania in pursuit of forbidden knowledge! Many legends and myths have spawned over the millennia about Vlad von Carstein, first to bear the name of that damned vampiric bloodline. Yet some rumors say his legend begins FAR earlier in a distant land to the south. Let's dig up some graves and see what we can uncover!

🤣 haha Thought tbh, I vew Warhammer vampires as closer to standard then many newer takes like Twilight. They are suppose to be UNDEAD! on top of that warhammer Vampires expands their domain from just controlling some beasts and transformation. And instead beeing born with natural affinity for Necromancy, as such magic naturally flows through their undead bodies. I love the warhammer combination of Vampirism & Necromancy! it really allivate the vampire monster to new heights imo. But having a vampire actully be quite ugly / dreadful and using magic/transformation to keep their allure is not new from Warhammer for vampires :)

@@loremasterofsotek Sorry for being late but can you tell me your sources especially about the bit with Vlad and Isabella, because other than the army books and the black library trilogy of the vampire wars, I have nothing. I am asking you this because in the trilogy Vlad is the one who is not 100% sure if he loves Isabella and she is the one who madly falls in love with him. In fact Vlad recognises that he is in love with her at the end of "the court of the crimson queen"
@rellek4053
@rellek4053 6 ай бұрын
Fascinating that Isabella is really characterized here as the opposite of how I’ve always heard her described elsewhere. I was always told that Isabella was a GOOD influence on Vlad. She kept him sane, kept him honest, she reined in his bouts of anger and madness because they were deeply in love. I loved that because despite them being a dark couple, they were a genuinely healthy relationship for each other. The only consequence of this is it makes Mannfred look like more of a bitter, jealous creature and frankly I’m okay with that. Mannfred sucks.
@loremasterofsotek
@loremasterofsotek 6 ай бұрын
I think both can be true! Isabella was able to temper Vlad's outbursts as his control over his more violent urges waned. She knows better than any how to control his moods and is able to wield Vlad's fury like a blade when she wishes to. I don't think Isabella is evil or even TRULY terrible for Vlad as an individual, but when she becomes a vampire the two of them begin to feed off of one another in a negative way. Prior to his love with Isabella, Vlad never exhibited the levels of rage and cruelty that he would become infamous for later on nor made the plays for power that would ultimately lead to his death. Isabella, however, also was not NEARLY as cruel and dangerous during life as she would become once she was given the Blood Kiss. Vlad avoided giving the Isabella the Blood Kiss for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE because he KNOWS that once she joins the Undead, the darker aspects of who she is will ultimately rise to the surface and begin to dominate. But he gives in and ultimately grants her wish in order to stay with the one he loves, although doing so dooms them both to a very dark future that ultimately ends in tragedy. Mannfred is a bitter and jealous creature no matter how you ultimately spin it. Even if you give him the MOST grace possible of killing Vlad because he's ultimately turned into a monster parody of his more noble past, Mannfred still personally benefits from it in his own ambition for power and is keenly aware of that. The story of Vlad and Isabella had moments and flashes of being a genuinely loving, healthy relationship. But that version of them was fleeting and rare after she became a Vampire and truly embraced what it is to become one. Some stories I think fall into the error of portraying her as a gentle and kind-hearted soul after she turns, completely ignoring that this is the same woman who cursed her family heirlooms to become eternal fonts of blood and hosted horrific Blood Feasts where innocents were tortured and fed upon. That being said, the joy of these stories is that it's completely valid to take your own interpretations of them and run with it! Warhammer is an eternally fuzzy world missing many details, so if you want to sculpt the Vlad and Isabella romance into more of a dark romance with a heart of gold that ends in tragedy, that's totally fair.
@loremasterofsotek
@loremasterofsotek 6 ай бұрын
I think it would bear mentioning that MannfredxVlad would not exist simultaneously with Mannfred seeing Vlad as a father. Those are two separate but equally viable interpretations of the relationship between them. Although I suppose it could be argued that if they're both thousands of years old then both COULD have happened but from a human perspective that certainly would be an eyebrow-raiser. Some cultures such as the Elves see no problems with that as they don't fear/dread the consequences of incest, which Vampires as being unable to sire children may fall into a similar category. That being said, if the idea just deeply bothers you there's no reason to keep it! Chuck it straight into the trash! It's just one possible version of the story among many. When it comes to Mannfred being the "good guy", that only matters if you think the Empire escaping the clutches of the Vampires is a "good" outcome. No matter how you look at the story, it's undeniable that Mannfred von Carstein saved the Empire from Vlad & Isabella. Period. Personally, I don't think that makes him a good guy though. He did it for purely selfish reasons, whether that was to attain power or to kill what Vlad had become. Mannfred had NO interest in saving anyone from the Vampires so in that sense I don't think what he did was particularly heroic, especially as he did it in such a way that he could avoid blame or personal sacrifice should his plans had gone awry.
@rellek4053

@@loremasterofsotek I totally respect that. I’m fine with multiple interpretations, and the version of events you present makes Mannfred a way more interesting character. I just think it’s the first time watching lorebeards where it just rubbed me the wrong way. I usually don’t like the “I’m a vampire but I’m actually a good person” trope in most media, but Vlad and Isabella are special to me because they were the exception to that. They might not be heroes, but I thought they had enough good traits and few enough bad ones that from a certain point of view they could almost be seen as preferable to the current rulers of the Empire. I had never heard of any huge blood feasts or father wife son love triangles or any of Vlad or Isabella’s corruption before, so it all came out of left field for me and tarnished some characters I thought I knew pretty well. Also I panic deleted one of my earlier comments when I saw that you hearted my original one. I was at work at the time and was worried I hadn’t been respectful enough.

Not only is Vlad's name based on Vlad Tepes, but the name dracula itself is based on Vlad Tepes III of Wallachia; His father was Vlad "The Dragon" tepes, which would be Dracul in romanian, and his son was thus "son of the dragon" - Vlad "Dracula" Tepes, The Impaler.

After watching this episode, I REALLY REALLY WANT A MANNFRED LOREBEARD. And now I see Mannfred' characterization on AoS in a new light. Like, one of the facts that is stuck with me is that Mannfred abandoned Neu-Sylvania when Nagash started the Realmgate Wars. And that in his throne room are statues of his greatest "rivals". And even the quote states that the reason of why he has those statues are unclear. Maybe he cannot look at Vladdy's Statue without thinking about what this new world is, and how far they (the vampire) are form being free. Because Mannfred is characterized oppossing Nagash because he knows that, when Nagash obtein his Necrotopia, the vampires will be killed because they won't be needed anymore. LIKE, MAAAAN, that is so cool.

I remember this bit in the Vampire Chronicles, where I think it’s the first time in the war campaign that Vlad got temporarily killed by cannonball, and Isabella is just curled up in his coffin with his shirt. Which is both cute yet also animalistic. And it goes further when basically the other vampires didn’t realise Vlad is going to eventually comeback, and they’re fighting over the army and eventually over possessing Isabella herself. And when the contender basically drags her out of Vlad’s coffin and she’s defiant, he finally reappears and effortlessly defeats the usurper. But then Isabella takes Vlad’s sword and cuts down the vampire who basically was going to rape her. And it was interesting just how animalistic the whole hierarchy and social system of the vampires is, even in Vlad’s line.

That is warhammer in a nutshell. It doesn't have a canon but is constantly evolving with new author adding and removing stuff. Yeah when it comes to warhammer lore, whether it be found in Black Library books, army books, roleplay books etc. is very often contradictory or have lots of different versions of the same events. Welcome to Warhammer! That's an unfortunate reality we have to deal with as fans/theorists/whatever. I personally DESPISE the Nagash trilogy because it fucked up SO MUCH LORE and just doesn't make any god damned sense outside of its own little story. Andy and I discussed it at length and many of its problems during the Nagash stream we did on Lorebeards. When discussing the lore and trying to craft themes and narratives, you're always going to be forced to pick and choose from the VAST amount of lore that is out there in world. I have developed my own system of determining what lore I consider "valid" and what lore goes in the trash which I've spoken about in the past. Andy has his own system as well! Black Library novels in particular are SUPER hit or miss as the authors are rarely given much, if any, context to what they'll be writing about and virtually never do any research to check for other lore written about the topic they're about to tackle. This leads to situations like Josh Reynolds Masters of Death books conflicting GREATLY with prior established Vampire lore, or the Nagash trilogy conflicting with the vast majority of prior (and later) written Nagash, Tomb King, and Vampire lore. Or how the Archaon novels portray him as an exceptionally different character who loses one of his eyes to be replaced with a giant chunk of warpstone while the main Archaon from everything else has both of his eyes. There's a TON of conflict and that's unavoidable because frankly Games Workshop is too lazy and cheap to pay an editor/curator to make sure things stay consistent.

We have Vlad during the vampire wars yes, but I mean a proper civilization based around this concept. Because with vampires going all around the world, it would be nice if it popped up somewhere again. There are many different dynamics and interesting story points which could be explored with this. I have read some interesting fan concepts in this regard as well.

He is my favourite character as well and the only one whose story I liked from the End Times. I've played more Vlad Total War campaigns than any other character. For a change now I usually play his campaign as the defender of Order, helping The Empire and Kislev and the Dwarfs rather than building an undead empire. Whole new type of challenge as it takes quite a lot to convince these nations that you are a good guy. Thanks for the great discussion. Vashanesh was always Vlad to me. I also prefer a mod (TW W1,2,3) as a more human "handsome" Vlad model to be fair to Isabella and to be more acceptable to the humans and dwarfs..

It was a mostly silly question, but I love that you replied. At a guess I imagine that Nehekharan marriages would absolutely persist past death, because of their infatuation with death and belief they'd return after it (or the highborn would). When the Tomb Kings raised up, did they honour previous marriages, or was it a fresh slate? The follow up question would be whether Vashanesh and Neferata were married after both were already undead? Neferata certainly was, but was Vlad?@@loremasterofsotek

One thing I loved about the beginning of the end times was showing the power scaling of the vampires, also showing vlad in a league of his own.throughout the whole story there is lesser vampires discussing how terrifying Manfred is, and doing anything to stay on his hood side. Vlad arrives and absolutely backhands Manfred in a fight. Also Nagash reaches down to touch Vlad and Vlad catches him by the wrist. To me that’s insane because Nagash is basically a god to them and vlad just grabs his hand like “don’t touch me”

Im planning a warhammer fantasy rpg 4e campaign, maybe writing some short stories centered around my homebrew city of Dieterspende. One of the supporting characters of the campaign is a vampire pirate named 'Jolly Rodger', or Rodrick von Carstein to his adopted family who want nothing to do with him. I had it in my notes that he was originally sired by Vlad back in the first vampire wars after Vlad made it to the Reik and found him as a mercenary captain who impressed him and he took a liking to, and was willing to betray the empire for the right price. The offer vlad made was immortality, and the opportunity to be an imperial admiral, maybe even grand admiral of the new imperial fleet after vlad won. After that fell through, he took to traversing the high seas, raiding and plundering, but always coming back to the empire. Rn, the merchants guild of Dieterspende pays him off to both leave the city and its immediate trade alone, but also intercept any norscan raids from across the sea of claws This video informing me about Vlad helps me flesh out the relationship Rodger and Vlad had before vlad bit it, so much appreciated 🤓

I don’t often go to fan fictions or rewrites, but if there is a story like that where we get that pay off, or another altogether, I would read that like nobody’s business

@27:20 Ah yes, Vlad the Anthropologist. Have any of his ancient treatise on human nature been passed down to us?

I wonder, do vampires in Warhammer have mirror reflections? I wonder if whether they do or not have an impact on their self perception

Mannfred was my favourite vampire, though I disliked his redesign. We need his episodes soon. You and Andy seem to have a really cool tale on him. What is the best source for Mannfred lore?

Honestly, Negash is already pretty comical. Edit: What would have happened if the elixir of life had used high magic as a base instead of dark magic? Edit 2: The abilities of the Von Charstine blood line are all linked to authority. Over themselves (shape shifting), over their subjects (enthrallment slash controlling animals), and their lands (manipulating the weather).

Ooooohhh, love that second edit! And yes, Nagash is hysterical from a safe distance. Had it used High Magic instead of Dark Magic, I suspect it would have heightened the user's soul into a gleaming beacon of potential and magical power. Essentially turning them into an Elf or something similar, but that would have come with a very different set of upsides and downsides. That's just a theory, though!

So Vlad is in love with Isabella because she is pretty, and Isabella is in love with him because he does what she wants... Man, Warhammer really doesn´t know how to do inter personal relationships at all.

I prefer Vladislav to Vladimir, each to their own.

I'm also on team Vladislav just to make Vlad less of a stereotype at a glance.

what hurts me so much about the end times even more then the butchering of so many characters and storylines is how much cool shit happens but is written and rushed so fast that all the cool stuff gets taineted.

Honestly not a fan of Vashanesh and Vlad being the same person. Just feels like two different characters that got squished together.

eh, people change. Hard to believe that someone that old wouldn't go through some rather dramatic character development over thousands of years to the point that he takes on a new name.
