NOCTUA. NF-A4x10. and. NF-A4x20 This is a great video. I Purchased replacement from Amazon using the NOCTUA NF-A 4×20 and NF-A4×10 to replace the two fans on the CCTV DVR. I also cut the screen on the thinner fan, 4 x 10, which didn’t make a significant difference. I have not put a screen on this yet as recommended on this video. The replacement fans were a perfect fit, I did purchase the three wire, which I had to cut and splice using the original connectors, disregarding the yellow wire which is used for a variable speed connection. After plugging it back in it it made a great difference. I no longer hear the DVR on top of the cabinet.

Very helpful video, agree completely with your assessment. I have removed the metal cover and added a plywood cover to the top - killed the noise by 95%. My system was an Annie.

Standard size so a silent fan is easy to find and removing the honeycomb will also make a huge difference. I'm about to try doing the same with a DBPower RD810 cheap projector.

Were you able to make any headway with this? Have you tried removing the honeycomb and leaving the original fan? And what about a new fan? Any improvement?

Same issue and conclusion with Lorex NVR system I'm currently setting up. Ordered a newer fan last week, allegedly quieter, but it sounds the same as the stock fan with the case off (very quiet). The case venting holes are the culprit, so will be Dremeling out an open hole in front of fan body to minimize the air turbulence. ........ 30 minutes later, 1-5/8 in diameter hole drilled though case to match fan diameter and it's still just as loud with case back on. So still scratching my head. This is a plastic case NVR.

Thanks cpo. I used a Dremel with abrasive cutting wheel to cleanly cut out the the honeycomb grill and finished up with a metal file. Overall fan noise is cut. Still too loud if the unit is in a bedroom or you're sitting nearby. Both the power supply fan and the case fan run continuously in these NVRs and I can still hear the PSU fan but not as loudly. The board and components inside were as filthy with dust as my PC gets without regular dusting ( I carefully use my compressor). Although the fan noise is less, it's still loud enough to be annoying and I'm considering replacing the fans.

I never replaced the fans, just moved the NVR to an unoccupied room. Still too loud. I'm soon replacing it with a Reolink system and hoping it won't be as loud.@@goata007

I recon in most cases it can run without the fan at all. Surly the fan is there to cater for the hottest environment whereas in the uk I doubt it gets hot enough. I’d like to know exactly what the max temperature is it’s happy to work at Nd perhaps put a thermostat in the case to switch on should it get too warm. ???

Connect the fan to the 5 volt and ground of the hard drive, sorted me out fan runs alot slower enough to still cool

Does your DVR's fan stay on after you shutdown the system from the operating system software? My DVR fan only goes off when I pull the power supply plug out of the mains socket, is this normal?
@LogitexIT4 жыл бұрын
I watched this, used a dremel to cut out the honeycomb grill and it's now virtually silent. I can hear the hard drive above the fan for the first time.

I wish I saw this video before buying the lorex. I'm absolutely returning in. Seriously its so loud ...they might as well have attached a Harley Davidson exhaust to it! ...and this is 2021 people! I assure you this is not useable in any home. It is LOUD!!!

Have you thought about spacing the fan back away from the fan a little, also utilise the upper mountings to help stop and vibrations.

Yes! I was about to comment this. I do HVAC and this is what I would do as well. Might try it myself.

I had the same issue with my Lorex NVR. I changed the fan to a Noctua and it made no difference. Next I used an electrician's hole punch tool and punched out a 1-1/2 inch hole that completely removed the honeycomb holes. Still no significant noise reduction. Ultimately I decided to leave the cover off, install the NVR in a closet and built a shelf above the NVR to protect the NVR internals. In the office closet the NVR is quiet as a mouse. I use a USB extension cable to get the mouse to work from my desk.

I bought the 16 channel N862 , motherboard fan is quiet enough but the noise from the power supply fan is annoying loud. Literally winds up and stays loud. The only place to put this is in the attic or its own room if you have a big house. measured at 70dB,
@xr280xr5 жыл бұрын
It is really bad. I put mine out of sight to try to protect it in a break-in but it's so loud, you would still locate it instantly. Also super annoying. The running toilet thing was a perfect description. Just have to be sure not to void the warranty.

I have this same Costco unit and bought a noctua fan to replace the one that came with, it turned out noctua fan is making same amount of noise as the original, so obviously it's a design flaw of the case, right now I have the fan disconnected since it's not that hot where I live, so far it's not overheating, how ever I will still need to think of a way to relocate the fan so it will not sound like a jet engine.
@vassell865 жыл бұрын
Update, looking through the noctua fan package and found a "low noise adaptor" which allow the fan to perform at lower speed, with that hooked up, the unit is now much quieter.
@tilgaztizi91635 жыл бұрын
@@vassell86 The fan in the power supply is the really noisy one. Did you go by the total noise of the unit or the noise of the side fan only and did you do something about the power supply fan? There seem to be conflicting reports about the effectiveness of the Noctua fans. Some saying they make no difference some saying the NVR is quiet now. Again, the side fan seems to be the least of the problem.

@@vassell86 Wow. I had the same noise issue and looked over the low noise adapter also. Thanks for the update, saved me bringing a dremmel to the unit and audio damping foam. +1 low noise adapter.

A lot of DVR manufacturers designed it like that nowadays so the noise is kinda of unavoidable unless you do some DIY

Hi I recently installed my dvr purchased from costco but the fan is pretty loud at least for me it is especially since the dvr is in the living room and not even my desktop computer tower is as loud as this dvr. The brand I bought is Nightowl 5.0 wired cameras. I know the fan I need is 40x10mm but I’m not sure if its the 4 or 3 pin fan since I haven’t opened it but if anyone could help me out with that it would be greatly appreciated since I want to purchase it and install it asap. Can’t stand these loud fan noises.
@tilgaztizi91635 жыл бұрын
So, what did you actually do to reduce the noise? Not a word about that. Did you come up with a solution? Also, the fan on the power supply is the REALLY noisy one. Did you come up with any solution for that?

See my comment above to learn what I did. The grill on the PSU is a lot finer and further away from its fan blades than the situation with the case fan. Short of replacing the power supply with something else, I don't think doing a mod on the power supply will make any difference. I'm settling for the substantial noise reduction in just modifying the case.

All I did on my Costco 4K was flip the fan over so it's blowing in and sniped the grid out of the hole, much better with something like a 60 - 70% reduction.
