Swiss rail is truly a world leader in engineering. I'm in awe at the smoothness and calmness of the system. The banked curves and the lack of annoying alarms, bells, dings, clacks, rattles and train horns or whistles just leaves room for a smooth hum. I wished we had this in the USA Seeing the ride from the front is also a nice treat. So much beautiful scenery.

I spent a few weeks in Fribourg/Freiburg in 1973 with a bunch of people from Norway, Finland, Yugoslavia, Greece, Egypt, UK, etc. doing a data communications programming course. The instructor was a South African and it was taught in English. It must have been difficult for one of the Finns who couldn't speak a word of English. He was a very good drinker, but, and taught us a few drinking songs. The reason that I'm commenting here is that there was a very good restaurant at the railway station. Silver service, white linen table cloths and napkins, waiters in formal waiter dress, the sommelier and the maitre d wore suits. Very good food at reasonable prices. I'm told that all the railway station fine dining restaurants are gone. That's very sad.
@briancooper5624 жыл бұрын
Excellent. Is Rose' the 'summit' of the line? there seems to be a large railway workshop there possibly for servicing helper engines in the past uncoupled here at the top of the hill? Is the very long platforms at Bern to allow for two trains to use the platform at once? Similar to the two trains on the same track in a station seen later on. There looks like 'Thunder in the mountains' (song) as we get close to our destination.
@brucewilliams87144 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for a great journey. I just love the relaxed approach you Swiss have to lineside fences, (or absence thereof). Even in high speed sections there are foot/cycle paths just a few metres from the track. You are a very cool people. I'm reminded of first arriving in Lucerne from Rome. Having learned there to survive the chaos of marked pedestrian crossings by waiting, then plunging into a gap, when outside the Lucerne station, I paused momentarily at the crossing, and was astounded to see all traffic glide to a halt. Wonderful!
@lorirocks7774 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really appreciate that about Switzerland too.. that many places that would be fenced off and closed to the public in other countries are open and there is just a general trust that people will do the right thing. I hope that trust won't be abused in the future.

At certain points along the entire route we enter short zones labeled "Neutral Section/Open Circuit breaker" followed shortly by "End Neutral Section/Close Circuit breaker." What does this signify? My apologies in advance if you've already explained this elsewhere. I just don't recall having ever seen it before in any other videos. Fantastic trip, as usual! First time I recall a trip from Bern to Luzern.
@lorirocks7774 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Trains in Switzerland run on altering current (AC) power, at a frequency of 16⅔ Hz. The network has multiple power sources and it's not always possible to synchronise the frequency perfectly. If you picture a sinewave that is in the upper region meeting one in the lower region - this would cause a short circuit and at 15'000 volts - tremendous damage. That is why neutral sections are placed between 2 unmatched power sources, where the engineer needs to turn off the main switch for a brief moment and with 2 locomotives sometimes lower the pantographs. If 2 pantographs were at the exact start and end of a neutral section at the same time, it also causes a short, which could leave the area without power until the damaged components are replaced.
@scottevans26854 жыл бұрын
@@lorirocks777 Thank you! I hadn't thought of that before, but it makes sense. So in those few meters of "neutral space"between power sources is the train running on "battery power," or has the momentum of speed built up to the point where movement can continue for a minute or two without receiving continuous current?

Do Swiss Railways use 2x15 kV power supply? In other countries using 25 kV as a standard, they use 2x25 kV Volt standard. Meaning power transferred to Catenary is 50 kV but trains only received 25 kV. I'm wondering if Swiss railway do the same method, but at different voltage (and frequency)
@lorirocks7772 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you mean catenary lines in those countries are 25kV but feeder lines are 50kV? Because giving locomotives anything more than they're rated for causes major problems. The high lines around train lines are generally higher voltage. These are 66kV & 132kV, for distributing power around the network.
