Bread is so satisfying and satiating to me. Especially potato bread. I'm always confused by the people who avoid white rice because they're scared of gaining weight but then they dump olive oil into all their food in massive quantities. 😒

I thought The McDougall Program for Maximum weight loss was an excellent book. He clearly mentions that "calorie counting" can lead to eating disorders, and to eat as much as you'd like.

For the people wanting to keep bread in their diets, I would highly recommend Ezekiel brand bread. It's organic, sprouted, whole grain bread (wheat, millet, barley, etc) and it's delicious!

Hmm I don't think I've ever tried Manna bread. Where do you find that? I generally buy the 'Low Sodium' kind but I like the original or the cinnamon raisin kind too! It's definitely a more hearty bread, but it makes for great avocado toast.

For me this worked: (starch solution) - mainly millet, buckwheat, potatoes, lentils and rice - flours (gluten free) only occasionally - loads of veggies like broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, garlic - 1 to 2 servings of fruit (mainly apples- my favourite- but also bananas, grapes, dates, figs, peaches etc) - 3-4 avokados a week But what matters the most is listening to your body. Waiting to eat your meal till you're physically hungry and eating till you're satisfied is the best in my opinion. As long as it's vegan and you don't hurt anyone it's awesome ;)

I have been on the starch solution for 3 weeks and love the freedom of it and it's so cheap to feed a family of 4. So easy to make ahead meals and I found frozen veggies and rice from the superstore today that my husband can take to work. I've lost 2" on the top half of my body and feel amazing! I want to scream from the mountain top that everyone should eat this way, but then I would be crazy.

My boyfriend lost 13 lbs just cutting out oil after we watched the Starch Solution. I lost 7. We haven't been actually sticking to the Starch Solution- just incorporating it and still eating some vegan junk food when we feel like it. But still- for not dieting, 13 lbs and 7 lbs is pretty good! Still eating the same AMOUNT, just better food. Oil sucks.

you're everything we've needed in this vegan community...I love that you are just as compassionate to us, humans, not just the animals...You constantly remind us (well me) to not stress out and be loving to myself. Thanks for putting things into perspective for me. In the grand scheme of things...It's body weight that I was *stressed* out about. Losing it at a rapid speed wouldn't have directly correlated to my overall happiness with life. I have other goals beyond weight loss. You've helped me focus on good health, loving myself daily and just enjoying the journey because I will get to where I want over time. Thanks so much

So glad I found your channel. New vegan here and really struggled to figure out what to eat that would really satisfy me. Love your recipes and food ideas!! My weight-loss isn't extreme, but definitely consistent. Years ago I would've gotten frustrated with the "slow" weight-loss and would have started a ridiculous diet to lose 30lbs in 30 days just to gain back 60lbs afterwards. Wish I would've tried this years ago!

Thanks for giving me the info on the starch solution diet and also moving me away from the 'smashing in the calories' thinking (past videos are brilliant), you gave me permission (as a lost dieting soul) to captain my own ship and not blame myself because I gained weight...I have been doing the low fat starch diet since September, lost 21 pounds and I am now plateauing, but I've not exercised (in a high temp. way) since the end of September (very busy schedule but I am still very active). For once in my life, I find this lifestyle very sustainable, nourishing, and I know with out doubt, that the weight I lose will never return. Slow and patient is the opposite of my other 'diets' undertaken but it feels right, feels healthy in body and mind.

Hannah, i wonder going from high fruit to high starch do you too have experienced increase of body odour as i did for sure? Also i feel a lot more tired on the starch solution and get more cravings for sugar - and salt of course... and i gain weight - mostly waterweight i guess but still scary....also my body builds more mucus which i do not like too...am i doing something wrong or is starch just not for my body?? Should i sneak in more raw foods? more greens? more veggies? it is so convenient and tasty so i would really love to make this work....

How tall are you Hannah? Great video by the way! I live in Shanghai and you can definitely see what Dr. McDougall is talking about in his presentations regarding the difference between the 1st and 3rd generations in an Asian family (size, weight, dietary choices, etc) since Shanghai is more Westernized than other areas in China, so I agree with you about looking at the 'big picture' instead of over-analyzing everything! Also, what's your opinion on vegan bodybuilders? They seem to be eating a lot more protein than non-bodybuilders to gain muscle, is it possible to do the same on an HCLF diet? Thanks (sorry this was long)!

this is a really good video. i started my transition to veganism about 4 months ago - 2months now entirely 100% vegan diet whoo! - and in one night i watched a zillion videos and for a hot minute i was convinced that rawtil4 was the way to go.. and then i watched earthinling nutrition's video (all 54 minutes of it) and it just made sense to look into starch based recipes. i dont notice that ive lost weight, but i feel so much better following your recipes and guidelines, and also every time i visit my mum she says "omg you're TINY" . anyways point of my comment mostly is that veganism is the way to go, ive never felt better, and thank you for making such amazing content that keeps me inspired to eat healthy :) xo

Mcdougall (starch solution author) says that if you really crave it you can add a teaspoon or two to your daily diet and always go for less refined products, so i guess brown is better. However from my experience and from what most doctors recommend for the most effective weightloss you should eat mostly whole plant foods with very little refined products.

Interesting. One of the most popular threads on "Mark's Daily Apple" is the "Potato Diet". Someone who had reached a plateau in their paleo weight loss went on it, lost weight and shared his story. The next thing you know there is an active thread of people doing the same thing! So I guess you could live on potatoes and lose weight (although I wouldn't recommend it long term!)

I started eating a whole foods plant based diet 3 weeks ago and I've gained 2 pounds. I don't get it :/ I'm sticking to whole foods, mostly fruit, rice, potatoes and green veggies, no oil, nuts and seeds as a condiment only. Any advice? I don't eat any processed food, so I don't know what I should cut out or reduce in my diet. As an aside, I don't understand why you'd mention the standard asian diet as an example for starch based weight loss, they consume a lot of fish and seafood, so if anything, an asian diet is an example of pescetarianism rather than veganism.
@juliea6095
@juliea6095 8 жыл бұрын
+ZoobaAruba A standard Asian diet obviously isn't vegan, but they don't consume as much meat as the standard American diet. Yes they eat fish and other meat, but in comparison to the amount of starches they eat (rice, veggies, etc), animal products are not the bulk of their diet like in America. Also, each generation is adopting a more westernize diet so the traditional Asian diet is disappearing overtime. Check out the China Study.
@garoofiya
@garoofiya 8 жыл бұрын
Julie P A traditional asian diet is high in animal protein, they eat the same amount of "meat" it's just sourced from fish, not cows. Using china as an example is advocating pescetarianism, not veganism. The china study itself reported statistics that showed a protective relationship between fish protein consumption and cardiovascular disease, the dr just chose not to highlight those findings because they didn't fit his agenda. These findings are similar to those found in the Kitava study, where the diet of the population was primarily fish, tubers, and fruit and they had virtually no heart disease or stroke. Personally, I don't consume seafood because I can't stomach it, not because I think it's unhealthy. Do you have any suggestions about what to do to stop gaining weight on this diet? I'm having something starchy and some greens with every meal, but I always use some type of sauce or condiment.
@sundarramanathan7275
@sundarramanathan7275 7 жыл бұрын
ZoobaAruba Dude you can't eat nuts and seeds. Dr Mcdougall states that clearly in his book that nuts and seeds are only for special occasions aka should be consumed sparingly. For people struggling with their weight, I imagine more so.

+Halle Shupinski I know this question is geared towards Hannah so I hope you don't mind my 2 cents :) Are you doing a lot of smoothies? Drinking a 10 banana smoothie vs eating 10 bananas is way different and you will probably not be able to finish all 10 bananas. Are you using oils to cook with? How much sodium are you taking in? How much water are you drinking each day? I'm just asking these questions because you may have over looked something in your diet. You may want to explore different types of vegan diets. Eating starches (grains, legumes, sweet potatoes, potatoes) will keep you fuller for longer periods of time vs eating fruit all day. Again I hope this helps you!

I follow Dr. McDougall very closely, and eat accordingly. He does frequent webinars, and I keep really updated that way with his Q & A's too. One point I'd like to make is that he does NOT approve of processed vegan foods at all. In fact, one question he answered was why do vegans wind up overweight and sick? He said the vegans that he treats are usually the ones that have strayed from the simple whole foods, starch-based, low fat foods like potatoes, rice, corn, legumes, etc. by eating processed vegan junk foods that frequently contain OILS which are VERY BAD for you. So, I respectfully disagree that we should just be able to choose between whole foods and processed plant based foods. It is MUCH better to keep it simple and UN processed. P.S. It's not just about weight loss. It's about maintaining maximum health, as well. Weight loss, if overweight to begin with, is just a part of the optimum diet for human health, which is starch-based with the addition of some fruits and veggies and occasional nuts, seeds, etc.
@HighCarbHannah
@HighCarbHannah 8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry U No definitley not processed vegan junk food I was referring to flours, breads, tortillas etc that are low fat. If you look at his recipes in The Starch Solution they all pretty much include one of those ingredients and usually tofu so they are pretty processed if you ask me. At least compared to a whole foods approach like we have in our recipe books.

With success comes responsibility and you should start being more responsible especially when it comes to sharing advices about health. You really need to start paying attention to every sentence you say because many of them make zero sense and lot of them contradict each other.
