Is well-being best achieved in accepting what is, or in passionately engaging in what is yet to be? Technology lawyer and writer Fred Pinto links counterintuitive findings from philosophy, wisdom studies, and psychology to tease out the idea that finding ourselves comes as a result of losing our firmly held ideas of ourselves first. In a modern world that encourages self-obsession, this talk is for everyone who wants to achieve more authentic forms of acceptance and transcendence. Fred Pinto is a technology and venture lawyer, author, and the host of The Fred Pinto Podcast. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"Find what you love and let it kill you" [2:01 minute marker] I've not heard that before and yet it resonated deeply with me.

It's really interesting how we have seen a shift in each generation over time and how we have naturally progressed to such a holistic perspective, breaking cycles and letting go of ideals. Great talk!!

Wow so much of this talk really resonates with me. Our paths are often winding and full of contradictions. Seeking out philosophical ideas and integrating them in our lives can provide a lot of solace!

The concept of wisdom being like a dial between acceptance and action is intriguing. I guess it's all about knowing when to let go and when to push forward.

This raises a valid point about attachment being a precursor to suffering and yes, I agree with him but as mothers we are wired to attach to our babies. Chaos would result if we weren't.

I love food and have to agree that it will kill me if I continue to have an unhealthy attachment to it.

I like the Dalai Lama's idea about losing attachments... finding inner peace seems like a pretty worthy goal.

Oh, yes, to the 3:17 mark. And that isn't something that's often spoken about is it?

Many dead artists prove Bukowski's statement that what you love will kill you. Case in point the 27 club.

Being a man also there would be chaos if every man detach themselves from their responsibilities. So we shouldn't ever take all points directly from them as their lives and perspectives are different than us. If everyone starts celebacy like them and leave the worldly affairs there would be no love, no bonds and no humans on earth. It's better we revise their teachings then take it. Like we can say we need to identify the unhealthy attachments and detach ourselves and for healthy attachments we can still be passionate about it and still detach ourselves from the output. So it doesn't bother us too much if the outcome is not as we desired
