At around 12:00, where the diary notes that the letter is in “Lord Nelson’s hand”, I don’t think he meant that the handwriting was literally Nelson’s (although he may have transcribed it to copy his handwriting). What he probably meant was that the letter he received was in Nelson’s own handwriting, instead of having been written out by a secretary - which would have made the correspondence a lot more personal and important.

Alex! Can you make a video reading the entire journal & showing each page? Thank you for your friend showing us the binding, the pin, materials, etc.! This is an incredible find! I hope you share and preserve this! I would LOVE it if you shared this on video with everyone! What a great find!!! I think the author probably bound this himself, or his wife or a friend bound this for him. BTW, some of us still drink Dandelion tea & eat dandelion leaves! They are great in a salad! (As long as it's been moist & the plant is growing in a fairly shady area!) Thank you for sharing such a beautiful, historical book! Please make a video reading this & showing the art work! Museums generally put books like this away without many or any people seeing it, which is sad. Somerimes is for preservation, yet it's rare for them to make pictures of the pages available, and sadly the art, penmanship, binding, etc. is sadly put away and just as lost as it would be had it been destroyed. I hope you'll share it! Thanks for the video! Love it!

Just as a side light, back in the days before Xerox machines and the like, a person would travel to a Town centre and bring pen and ink or a book and ink and copy important documents for their own enjoyment or education. I worked in a land surveyor's office and the old surveyor told me that during the slow winter's, his uncle (also a surveyor) would take a horse and buggy or sleigh to the town hall or county seat. He would bring rolls of linen and ink and reproduce the important land documents and maps that he needed to research land titles. He would reproduce them so exactly to include flying eagles, running horses, pointing hands etc as depicted on the original.

Curiosity Incorporated Alex is there anyway to make copies of this book? I'm sure if there is any of his relatives still living they would cherish this book as part of their family history. There is a lot of people asking about getting a copy of it and willing to pay for the copy. Could it be copied and made into a coffee table book with references to the history and other things going on at the time that he mentioned maybe adding pictures to what he mentioned to the book. I'm not really sure how much the book would end up costing depending on how many orders that were taken and how much work went into it. Maybe if you put out the question about purchasing it and get a pre-order deposit it would make it worth it. I would still love to have a coffee table book of Mary's art and her life. It is strange to have never met you or Mary but feels so connected. When I was talking to some friends they were asking me if I was going to Mary's funeral because I had talked so much about Mary and her life and work they thought I really knew her. Even though I never met her I did cry about her passing she was one amazing woman and the art that she created will now be loved by Millions around the world through your KZbin channel. Now many talented artists have their KZbin channels exploding because of the work they did for you on The Potter's House it seems everyone that comes in contact with you have received nothing but good luck and you and return. You have a beautiful wife, three amazing children and now you have your hundred year old General Store. You also have a KZbin channel that can't be beat by anything else that's out there. I think you were a God send to Mary and now you are being blessed for your good deeds have been returned to you tenfold. Ignore the trolls and continue to have a genuine loving and giving heart as you do. I think it's time for you to publish a CD in time for Christmas. I love how much you do remind me of Johnny Cash when you sing his songs. I used to drive my family crazy with the nickel jukebox at the cafe and play "A Boy Named Sue" over and over again LOL and the song "A Burning Ring of Fire". I'd be the first person to put my name on a pre-order list and send you money for that CD. Sending love to you and your family from Texas 💕🌵🙏🍀

I am a genealogist, so I have a few tidbits you might enjoy. Hermer Spratt married Martha Foote in 1778, and upon this marriage Martha inherited Pencil Hill. They remodeled a smaller Tudor era home into a grand house and in 1780--the year your journal starts--they moved in. Their only child, Thomas Edward was born in 1782. When your Hermer died in 1830, Thomas inherited everything, including Pencil Hill. His first born son was named Hermer Deveraux Spratt (born 1815) and was the author of a book on 16th century Irish history called Juverna. Hermer D. might have used his grandpa's notes as a part of his research!

I wonder if you know the story behind the name Jack Sprat? Prince John, Richard the Lionheart and the Ransom! In 1189 John (Jack Sprat) married Joan, the ambitious and greedy daughter and heiress of the Earl of Gloucester ("Joan ate all the fat"). When King Richard went on Crusade, from 1190 to 1194, John attempted to take the crown of England - a ruthless and treacherous usurper). On his return from the Crusades King Richard was taken hostage by Duke Leopold demanding a ransom of 150,000 marks. John reluctantly had to raise the ransom, leaving the country destitute for years and reducing John's inheritance ("They picked it clean"). The ransom was paid and Richard was released. John was crowned King of England following the death of Richard in 1199. He had his marriage to Joan annulled, she was never acknowledged as queen. She then married again to Geoffrey de Mandeville and her third husband was Hubert de Burgh. Jack Sprat rhyme aka Jack Spratt Jack Sprat could eat no fat His wife could eat no lean And so betwixt the two of them They licked the platter clean Jack ate all the lean, Joan ate all the fat. The bone they picked it clean, Then gave it to the cat Jack Sprat was wheeling, His wife by the ditch. The barrow turned over, And in she did pitch. Says Jack, "She'll be drowned!" But Joan did reply, "I don't think I shall, For the ditch is quite dry."

Hello Alex, what you have there is an incredibly rare and valuable journal. Valuable in cash terms to a certain extent but more valuable for its historical importance. I believe it would fetch a considerable sum at a specialist book auction such as held by Sotheby’s or Christie’s etc. Major libraries like the British Library, Smithsonian, Canada National Library in Ottawa would welcome it. It would also attract great interest from collectors of Nelson memorabilia and if proved to have his own handwriting in it then you might be looking at tens of thousands in financial value. As well as collectors of Washington, Wellington, Napoleon, Franklin etc. Contact one of the top auction houses, not a local one, for the best advice on it. Also keep it in a dry, clean location wrapped in acid free tissue and cloth in a box and make sure it is secure without telling everybody where it is! It was normal for journals or note books to be started from both ends, so this is just another indication of its authenticity. Good luck with it, if you do decide to sell it you will be able to put the money to good use in many ways as you already do.

I think this is what the Elizabethans called an "Occasional Book." People would buy blank books and fill them with useful information. Hi Alex, just thought you might like to know that the word Consumption in the text of the journal. This I think was a reference to the killer disease now know as Tuberculosis. In the early 1800's the disease was rampant in both England and America. It claimed 1 in 4 deaths, it would fit the time period of the Journal. It had no known cure at the time and was very contagious, it was called Consumption because of the nature of the illness and the way the lungs were affected followed by fever which then 'consumed' the whole body. I loved seeing the Journal what a wonderful find. It was waiting for you to come along all those years amazing. Thanks for sharing your treasure with us all. Love from UK

Before the stapler, it was common to use a "bank pin" to hold papers together in a file. I've handled files from 1890-1900 and have learned that lesson! Bank pins are usually made of brass, sometimes nickel- plated, and are thinner than dressmakers pins. Steel ones rust and stain the paper brown; brass ones stain the paper green, of course.

My mother was born in 1911. I often think of all the 20th century history she lived through. I'm 67; pretty soon I'll be able to say the same about myself! 😉

My great-grandmother was born in 1864 during the Civil War and died in 1942 during WWII, it's weird to think how much the world changed in that timespan.

Carol, you really don't think about it. Space flight, the first man on the moon, Vietnam war, color television, private telephone lines, the microwave, electric lawn mowers, robots (think roomba), the personal computer, the personal portable telephone, and so much more. Just part of the life that we grew up, lived, and grew old with. To think! We are not even "senior citizens" any more, we are just "mature".

What an awesome find. I have been following your chant for a number of months now. What initially caught my attention was your potter’s old house renovations and followed you and your families travels. Yes, especially your trip to Canada’s Maritime provinces. So much history here ( so you don’t need to guess where I’m from.) I love antiques and history. So your channel meets the requirements. Good luck finding a good home for your book. Certainly it looks authentic to me as I have spent much time doing my genealogy research at the various archives.

Without the personal recorded perspective on history, all we have are common facts, dates and a consensus of the events. It may be more valuable to a historian, or a professor of history, than to any other person. That is the only means now to see new illuminations of a time. Thanks to you for having a true appreciation for the past.

Without television and worse, mobile phones. Damn, never thought of it that way but kind of no wonder the past brought forth some many people who achieved so much work, research, inventions, scientific discoveries, art etc. in a (often shorter) lifetime. Sometimes it seems impossible but yeah, unlike us they didn't spend most of their free time on the phone or in front of the telly.

The Incomparable Alex does it again. Unbelievable and unbeatable. A magical halo of shimmering goodness seems to precede your touch. I’m honestly becoming in ‘awe’ of your finds and discoveries. As the song goes, “You must have done something very very good, and not too long ago,” - or something like that. Anyway, on to the next one. (Of course with a follow up on this amazing adventure). Best to you and your family, and as always, stay, strong, safe and sure.
