I've since listened to hundreds if not thousands of hours of them. Their music is such a primal, visceral thing, it's pure dark and mysterious beauty. 100% For me it's a song that takes all these negative feelings about the world - hopelessness, frustration, the sense that shit wont get better, laughs at the absurd nature of it all (not in a "haha" way, but in a "that's fucked up" way) - and turns it into this big, angry, powerful release of raw emotion. It's music from a dark place mentally. It's gives a voice to the mix of depression, nihilism, absurdism and utter hopelessness I've felt at some of my lowest points and it's an incredibly cathartic experience. The way it falls apart a little plays into all that too - it just fits the lyrical themes brilliantly. That said, I wasn't sure what to make of it the first few times I heard it either. George is spot on with his take on it. And I definitely sympathize with where Ryan's coming from, it's a lot to take in.

@@NihilistCrab Spot on. I feel with music like this, your personality is a big indicator for your enjoyment of it. Im a HUGE Electric Wizard fan. That being said, your experience is 100% warranted. This song was made to hurt, on an emotional level. I personally feel like its intention was to give you that impending sense of doom for the eventual death of our planet and an extinguishing of our way of life. Its not meant to be an learning experience but more like a "shaking-you-awake" moment. Most of Electric Wizards other albums are MUCH more accessible. This track and album were really Electric Wizard at their most extreme. Think back to Dream Theater: remember how you guys heard Metropolis first? Well, that was kinda DT at their most extreme too. These are the tracks that either made people hate these bands or fall in love with them. Electric Wizard, especially, is all about that SOUND. You're meant to get high as shit, crank the music, and just drown in the overpowering aesthetic and forget about everything else. That said, Electric Wizard definitely toned it down a bit after this and released a lot of stuff that was far more accessible. Something like See You In Hell or Black Mass or Flowers of Evil are far easier listens. Not saying you'd love any of those, but if you like the heaviness but are just turned off by how it's too much, you might dig those more.

This band was definitely a tough one for me at first, too. Definitely one to ease into in order to really understand what’s going on. I think this was a little too much for them so early in their doom exploration. I think they should’ve listened to Wizard Bloody Wizard first, or really sat with some less intense doom for a while before jumping into Dopethrone. Maybe they’ll revisit one day...would be interesting to see the change in perspective once a bit more immersed in the purpose of the music, which is to embrace the emotional ride rather than to combat it with how you want to feel in the moment.

A huge part of doom/stoner metal vocals that is very different production-wise than other types of metal vocals, is the breathing. Doom vocals especially get the heavy inhale to heavy exhale in the mic, that adds to the sharpness of taking in a breath to warn the listener to the sigh of damnation afterwards. It's a really key, common feature in this genre of music and adds to the unsettling nature of things. It's not something that you'd pick out right away, but once you notice it makes a lot of sense.

One thing that I would like to say here about doom metal and stuff: some people, me included, like to divide doom metal into smaller subgenres. So, except of course Black Sabbath, who gave a doom blueprint, "traditional" doom metal was born in the 80s with bands like Pentagram, Candlemass and Saint Vitus. Bands like Electric Wizard or Sleep are very often called "stoner doom": they're much heavier than those traditional bands, louder and have much more distorted sound.
@pablochacon6663 жыл бұрын
So. Electric Wizard is a classic, but it's more of a stoner doom classic, not just doom classic.

Funeralopolis (and "Dopethrone" in general) is definitely at the deep end of the doom/sludge/stoner corner (maybe not the deepest of the deep) and I would not be surprised if if turns people off from Electric Wizard all together. It really is one of the heaviest, most distorted and noisiest music of the apocalypse in the darkest sense (especially since it was made over 20 years ago). But that is also the beauty of it: if you are the kind of person who is looking for the extremes, looking for that fix in heaviness, distortion and repetitiveness then "Dopethrone" is, to my mind at least, of the milestones along with "...Come My Fanatics". It basically is "heavy" for the people who are into heavy music. If you are interested in more accessible Electric Wizard, "Witchcult Today" or "Black Masses" are probably better bets. They are still very heavy but the production is way less noisier and more in the "retro" type (I think at least "Witchcult Today" was recorded with authentic 70's equipment). The vocals are also a bit more approachable although they are still buried in the mix and I think they are meant to be taken more as an instrument than just singing. I would recommend the following songs: "Witchcult Today", "Dunwich" or "Satanic Rites of Drugula". They are all from "Witchcult Today" and that is actually my favourite album from the band.

Lots of respect for giving this a shot! The older I get, the more I am drawn to music that is totally uncompromising. I’m a big fan of electric wizard. I get what Ryan is saying about creativity just for the sake of it, but I don’t think that applies here. This is expressing very distilled misanthropy and nihilism. Obviously that’s not a very good way of living your life on a daily basis but those feelings exist, and for me there’s something very satisfying hearing music express those emotions in a very pure way. Also they are amazing live.
@thestoo83283 жыл бұрын
Come my fanatics and Dopethrone were intended to fill the room, a big swarming, pulsating dose of heavy. Really think they are geared towards live performance and they are outstanding live. That tone is the the scuzziest, greasiest, most rage inducing cacophony of over-distorted fuzz ever recorded, and makes most doom sound more like a bad day than the end of the world lol. The guitars fuzz and the bass's fuzz are so grimey and don't match, and that's unsettling enough, but absolutely sick!! But when the vocals come in just as distorted, but also not matching up really with the rest, the 3 different distorted tones slightly off of each other plays with your head, and makes it ache if you're not used to it.. it's an acquired taste, I don't think anyone would go from radio rock to electric wizard and be able to stand it, but it makes you feel something, and crap rock is devoid of that fire and emotion.. that said, if the vocals had been cleaner, more melodic, and coherent, I think this song would've been huge, because musically it's undeniable, but the added distortion of the vocals on top is like an FU to the mainstream, and just a manifesto of their whole "legalize drugs and murder" ethos. If you want cleaner vocals, check out dunwich, or any of the stuff when Liz joined the band.. chosen few, Torquemada 71, satanic rites of drugula.. much more melody, but still doomy AF. But funeralopolis is THE pinnacle of crushing tones, they don't need to go fast to compete with Slayer and other bands known to bring out the aggression in the listener.. when that riff kicks the fuzz on, or turns up the guitars volume knob, whatever, it absolutely hypes me up to the point I could smash someone's nose into powder, much like payback by Slayer, only MORE crushing because it's almost in slow motion adding to the tension and angst.. I listen to the song at least 1-3 times a week, and force coworkers to hear it at earsplitting dbs along with me! They'll learn to love it, it's the perfect soundtrack to the hellscape I work at.. lol 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Haha I love that reaction. I love Electric Wizard, and kinda get a kick of seeing other people being shocked and disgusted by them. The whole Dopethrone album (along with Come My Fanatics) is truly some of the rawest, heaviest stuff out there. Nihilistic, bleak, drug-fueled, wild, heavy. I don't agree with Ryan about it not being musical, though. From my experience, musicality can take many shapes and forms, and can get very extreme at times (hell, there's some weird, WEIRD stuff when you dig in to modern classical music!). You should try some Sunn O))), Earth or Boris to find bands that are really pushing the boundries of what heavy music is with their Drone stuff. Oh, and if you thought this was unsettling, musically and lyrically, you should try out their song ''We Hate You'' from the same album. Pretty dark and fucked up!
