@@LostWax - I was actually very surprised when I did the arm that it went a lot faster and was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I've yet to make the jetpack (which I'm still finding intimidating) it was on my list for this year, but I think I'm going to do this one first. I'm using PVC tube instead of the bits of pen. I found I could make the wire fit more snugly into the tube by adding a lining. I found some old coax cable and removed the inside - must be coax as the sleeve is round inside unlike mains cable. It was a little too big, so I sliced the sleeve lengthways and cut a couple mm off to reduce the diameter to the exact amount needed to fit inside the PVC tube.

I made this for a concert this past October and it turned out amazing! My only problem is, the paint rubbed off on the under-arm section of the body and one of the crossbody strap pieces fell off (though that was admittedly just a bad hot-glue job on my part). Therefore, I'd like to ask: What kind of acrylic sealer would you recommend to prevent this from happening again?
@LostWax
@LostWax 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I haven't found anything that would add enough abrasion resistance to make a big difference. The problem is that anything that goes on nice and hard is also going to crack easily because of it's brittleness. Another thing is that if you have just recently painted it, the paint won't have completely cured and might wear off quicker.
@davidhensley76
@davidhensley76 5 жыл бұрын
After you've made all these groovy things, does the hot glue continue to stick for a long time, or does it slowly release from the foam?
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
The hot glue stays stuck to the foam really well in the long term, just as long as you don't leave the costume somewhere where it will get really hot, like in direct sun on a really hot day, or in a hot car.
@ristopoho824
@ristopoho824 5 жыл бұрын
I just thought of something kinda weird. I have the tools and skills to craft metal, but foam has always been quite difficult for me. And, even though it takes a ton more time, this pattern may work with metallic parts too. Gon need to think about it first through, before i start trying anything out. It may be a dumb idea for some part and then i'm stuck with it if i just start doing.
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
I think it could work, depending on what you have for forming the metal. Funny, I came from a metalworking background- jewellery:)

Looking at the shoulder piece in the beginning compared to the end (or rather with the arm and without), it looks like part of the shoulder armor isn't included, is that correct? I believe it is the part that ends up attached with the hinges. If the arm is already built and this is going to be in addition to it, is that last piece not required?
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're absolutely right, with the mechanical arm the shoulder armour doesn't need the extra piece.

Hey there, do you recomend to seal the shoulder with plastidip?
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
If you have the money and a good place to spray where you aren't breathing in the fumes, go for it, plastidip gives a great surface finish. I personally don't think it's necessary unless you are going to be using a costume a lot.

Do you find that the Artist paint (Liquitex Basics) bonds to the EVA foam? Or if you scratch the foam (or flex it) after it’s painted, does the paint flake off?
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had problems with flaking using the artists paints (I did when using house paint). I think one of the reasons I get a good bond is that I don't generally heat seal my foam before painting, so there are lots of tiny holes in the foam for the paint to grip on to. As the paint gets older and more brittle, it will crack if you flex the foam too much, but I haven't had it flake off as a result of the cracking.
@nicoledeibert1150
@nicoledeibert1150 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I prime foam with an elastomeric paint, which bonds to the foam and then the paint bonds to the elastomeric, but I am trying to see if there are alternatives. I appreciate your information.
