The '58 Impala was the best in my opinion, such class and elegance. When I was a kid my dad had a '57 and the guy across the street got a new '58 in a cream color and it was stunning. I have always like the looks of the "58 and this black example has to be one of the best I have ever seen. Thanks for bringing this one to us Lou !

Thanks Lou for getting Dennis to show us this spectacular piece of automotive sculpture and 1950's design. I can appreciate Dennis' concerns about people losing all sense of place when they see this gleaming ride as they go about their business driving by. Dennis would feel vulnerable in such situations. The interior with the beautiful faux tri-colour upholstery bucket seats in the rear looked spectacular as did the various coloured, looked like anodised aluminium door trims with the contrasting aluminium dash trim. As Dennis said...those door panels would not be cheap to make. The paint, chrome, the 2 door coupe design, the Impala badging... breathtaking. The engine sound and presentation...100%. Any wonder he bought it in the car park before the car went to auction...

To think these cars were made on an assembly line, yet today looking at this car, it has a one-off, hand made-custom feel to it. It would be impossible for the GM of today to build a car like what they did here in '58. Think of all those small bits of stainless, aluminum and chrome, that compound curved back window. That was all done by a company who helped to win a world war. A corporation that had dedicated factories to make that trim, alone! A corporation that built cars like this brilliant example, also had a game changing hand in building locomotives that conquered the steam locomotive, buses for our cities and towns, refrigerators and air conditioners for our homes, trucks, airplanes to aerospace. Lou, I think we're close enough in age to remember what GM was, to look forward as a child to each coming September and the new car releases in the 1960's to early 70's. This car represents to me the optimism for the future ahead; but somewhere in the mid-seventies, that optimism as well as the GM we remembered, was fading out.

Another great car! An older friend of mine had one, when I drove it, I felt sure inside like I was in a sherman tank! I really like the styling on these, as well. I think 1958 was the first year for quad headlights on cars, as well. My dad had a 1958 Nomad wagon, four door, blue and white two tone as well. You are correct. 1958 was first year that quad headlights were legal in all 48 states. That’s why so many cars had them in 58. The Plymouth Fury was going to have them in 1957 but there were some states where they weren’t allowed. That’s why the 57 Plymouth Fury had parking lights right next to the headlights. I think that looks kinda funny. I don’t know if any states had 57 Plymouth Furys with quad headlights or not. I think it was just easier to make them all the same. Then in 58 Christine came out. She was the only red one though. Sorry, I went off on a tangent there. 😏

Another beauty Lou. I was really surprised to see turquois in the interior instead of red. When I was younger I help a neighbor partially redo one for a customer. He had a nice shop and paint booth in his garage. We repainted the body white and changed the interior metal and steering wheel from blue to bright red. We also installed the continetal kit and painted the ring white and the center the same red as the interior. We put an LED third brake light in the fake vent on the back of the roof. One of my jobs was to polish all of the stainless trim. Let me tell you it felt like I would never get done. There is so much brightwork on the outside of the cars. They are really cool cars.

@@loucostabile :This is a beauty, pure art one of the legendary designs of Harley Earl. Speaking of the first big block, the cylinder heads were referred to as the "porcupine " heads. Any "fuelie" as GM called the fuel injection system cars is worth a fortune. They're just so rare due to the fact they were very expensive. The fuel injection system added roughly $400-$600 to price of the car which is why most people went with carbs instead. I've seen a few of the fuelie equipped cars, if I remember correctly they were Corvette's. Anyway Lou please stay safe and a gr8 God bless day to you and the owner.

Beautiful '58 Impala. Silver-blue was a nice color that year, but you can't go wrong with onyx black. It's funny, back in the '70's when the '57 Bel Air was a "Holy Grail" collector car, the '58's were totally ignored. They seemed so gaudy and heavy in comparison. Many years later, when they became appreciated and well restored, collectors became aware how beautiful they really were. Now they often surpass the '57 in value!

Lou this car was really clean. The engine bay was immaculate and had the big block 348 resting in it. I'm not a big fan of continental kits. They really detract from the beauty of the car's lines. His car did have the dual antennas which is cool. I wish you would spend less time on mundane things like tire jack directions which would give more time for the owner to share their car story. Same with trunk and treats. This was the first year of the Impala which was the feature car but you got off on a tangent with belaire and lesser models in the brochure. The 58 was a one year body style. Nothing before or after resembled it. Also you could really load these cars up with options The feature car seems very spartan. No power windows, seat, or A/C. I made a point to watch your video to the end and I was disappointed that you didn't ask what it was about the 58 Impala that he had to have it. Some of the owners of the cars you feature are extroverts and are able to tell their car story without prompting. Others not so and that is where you come in. Again I encourage you to have a crib sheet of questions and prompts to make your videos all that they can be. You do a great job of videoing the cars and an amazing job of finding them. Keep your videos coming Lou.

Beautiful car Lou, my aunt had one baby blue, I always liked the chrome the curves of the 58, I wish I would of been older when she sold it to buy it back then prolly dirt cheap I’m sure… I think it looks it best in the black or burgundy, thank you for video this must of been when you would do a ride along…

I love the 58 Impala. It reminds me of what the Corvette might have looked like if Chevrolet had done to that what Ford did to the T Bird. So it’s kinda like a big Corvette. I’m glad they did it the way they did though. Now we have both. They actually had a concept car that they called the Corvette Impala and it looked a little bit like this. When these first came out they were called the Bel Air Impala. This is one of my all time favorite cars. 58, 59 and 61 are my favorites. I remember the first time I saw a 58 Impala. It was a pretty new car at the time. I must have been about ten. I’ve wanted one ever since. I turned one down one time because it had a 283 and I wanted a 348. That was a mistake. I was looking for a 58 when I found my 64 convertible and decided to buy it instead. Everyone thinks that the reason the 348 and the 409 is called the W Block is because the valve covers are shaped like a W. That’s not it though. It was just a code that GM had for the engines they were experimenting with. The X and the Y were small blocks. They kept the W because it had more displacement and the name stuck. www.hotrod.com/articles/chevrolets-w-engine-348/ www.chevyhardcore.com/news/throwback-thursday-when-the-corvette-and-impala-were-one-car/ auto.howstuffworks.com/chevrolet-impala.htm
