I wouldn't call them a different version. This was when they were in their prime. And they hired Bob Rock who convinced them to stop making heavy metal and instead make a rock album(The Black Album) and then he convinced them to conform with the times and make alternative music and wear makeup. I prefer the old Metallica any day myself. They said metal was dead but Pantera came out full force and picked up the slack that Metallica left behind.

I saw this tour at RPI Fieldhouse in Troy, NY...1989. One thing I remember is how loud Jason's bass was. The reason why, is because my jeans (as tight as they were) were vibrating around my ankles. I've actually never felt anything like that since then. The whole bottom part of my jeans near the ankles were vibrating because of the bass Hz bouncing off of them. It was something I've never forgotten.

@@DaEpicTable I was thinking the same thing. I hate to see when people compare the 2 for a couple reasons. One being they're both extremely talented bass players. 2, they have their own respective playing styles and sound that they adhere to because for each it works well for them. 3, it was never a competition, or shouldnt have been, and for that reason I have a lot of respect for Jason sticking it out and proving himself worthy even though he shouldn't have had to. I also have a lot of respect for what Cliff brought to the table and how his vast knowledge of music theory helped tremendously in making Metallica more of a cohesive unit in general. I only speak from my perspective through the first 5 albums, the progress is undeniable and I think a lot of that started with Cliff passing on some of what he knew of music theory, making a really good band an absolutely iconic one that not only knew what they were doing, but knew exactly how to do it as well. It's unfortunate really, the loss of Cliff, the circumstances in which Jason became the bass player for Metallica, and the animosity directed at him by the fans and his bandmates. I don't think it was always intentional, but I don't think it always wasn't either. He did fucking awesome for someone who must have struggled with the realization that no matter how good he was, even if he was 10 fold better than Cliff ever could have been, it wouldn't matter because he wasn't and never would be him. Over time he proved himself, the fans and his bandmates started to see him as a member of the band and a talented musician. I feel like Rob had it pretty easy in that respect. He would never have to go above and beyond to prove himself or feel awkward about his place in the band. Obviously he's a great bass player as well, but was lucky to have come in behind all of the hard feelings and such and only had to be what they needed in a bass player rather than measure up to someone held in high regard and still being freshly grieved. It seems to me it would be hard to be in that situation because on the one hand, naturally you want to give it 110% and show them what you're capable of, but on the other you don't want to appear disrespectful like you're trying to outdo or discredit the previous guys contributions up to that point. Cliff was fuckin awesome, no doubt, but I'm kind of a Newstead era fan to be honest. A lot of it just comes down to respect for how he handled himself and the progress he made in his own musical journey.

This VIDEO footage (audio obviously recorded separately and added by an amateur & not live Metallica on this day) was, I believe at the Miami Orange Bowl Stadium on the Summer Of '88, Monsters Of Rock Tour. I was right there at the front & center up against the retainer wall of the field, as close as anyone could be to James in the audience directly in front of him. it was just before the release of the fourth album, "...And Justice For All" and Jasons first full length album recording with the band. It was about a month prior to my 16th b-day, and it was probably the best day of my life so far at the time! great time & great, unforgettable memories! I dont care what anybody says about Metallica now, at that time, they truly ruled the metal world. Of course there were so many killer bands besides them though (not the other bands on that bill)

Jason and producer Bob Rob got rid of that thin weak mix and brought the bass back! For the life of me, I can never imagine how draining the bass out ever seemed to be a good move! I think Lars and James just had PTSD after Cliff died!

AFJA should’ve had more bass than any other Metallica album in honor of cliff but no, baby Lars has to get his way all of the time. Lars has made some of the dumbest career decisions (no snare on st. Anger, for instance) just because of his ego.

The loudest bass was AJFA album. The bass was so loud that it exceeded over 20,000Hz and became an ultrasound, that's why we couldn't hear the bass.
