Bodhi used to be in an amazing building in the mid 90s. It was close to Central and it had wooden floorboards and big windows. It was like a gourmet sanctuary for me back then as it was hard to get lots of vegan things and I have been eating yum cha since I was young.... I stopped going once they changed to the new location (which I think was the one before the current location) as it just didn't have the ambience I liked and the food changed too, plus the prices. They definitely had lots of tea back then... A favourite place from back then that still is great is Mother Chu's vegetarian on Pitt St. Their soybean rolls with blackbean sauce are extra!

I believe the chef from the old Tian Ci in West Ryde is now working in Green Sprouts in Neutral Bay and they have Yum Cha

Brilliant, I also grew up eating dim sum in hong kong and miss it so much, next time I am home visiting sydney I am heading to carlingford as that looked amazing. Agree about Bodhi, great food, but more healthy and modern than I want my yum cha to be!

It looks like Tian Ci reopened in Darlington? Im so happy these places are here. I definitely don't miss meat... except yum cha. Thats the thing I still crave from my childhood memories. I will definitely try all these.

Carlingford has now closed permanently :( this is so sad, after seeing this video I was super keen... bummer. Any ideas why or where they may open up again? or if there are any other yum cha places besides green gourmet or bodhi?

They all look so good! Gotta try them when I go to Sydney one day. Here in Indonesia I tried a vegan rice dumpling with vegan salted egg! Not sure what it's made up of. Taste like salted egg without the eggy smell :D

janicejanisjan you can easily create the egg wash look with vegan products! :) While not all places may know the difference between vegan and vegetarian, the restaurants that are in this video are well versed in the difference and I’m 100% confident all the dishes in this vid are vegan. Bodhi is 100% vegan, Tian ci was vegetarian and is now 100% vegan in a new location and carlingford veg also recently made the change to a 100% vegan yum cha menu after being vegetarian for over a decade!

Update 2020: Carlingford is closed, but Tian Ci seems to have re-opened in a different location. Although I couldn't find the offer of yumcha on their website, and only a couple of dumplings. Bodhi is still open, overpriced and overrated.

It’s made of soy protein and flavoured with herbs and spices to taste similar to meat but it’s not meat 👌🏼
