I think he has empathy and can put himself from Lenny's position and present it in a show. The Lenny's of the world actually are sometimes aware of their unlikable personalities and feel helpless trying to fix it.

"It shouldn't be a big surprise that somebody's having a hard time being around you" that's the insult equivalent of a ballistic missile. Honestly Louis ck has a good talent of being able to write harsh yet subtle insults that if you really thought about it would keep you up at night.

I don't think it's meant to be funny. They part that's supposed to make you laugh is to question how someone can go though life being that obnoxious and then wonder why they're not liked by anyone. This is meant to be more relatable than "funny".

@@johndoe9450 Are you dense? Lenny tells Louie he's not funny in the scene, that's what they meant by "I'd rather be told I'm not funny". I've read your comments up and down this wall and they are trash. All you do is tear others down and now you think you can correct others' takes when you have nothing to add and a middling understanding of the material. In short: YOU'RE Lenny. And you're no good.

Louis might be a sexual predator and abuser of women but I still think he should be given a second chance. He apologized for his behavior and I think most women will know not to be around him alone and would be smart enough to run away if he pulls our his penis and starts tugging at himself. We had a similar problem in the village I grew up in where there was a local man who would always tugg at his pecker in public in front of women we called him one eyed pete and all the kids knew to stay away from bit sometimes a few of the braver girls would watch him and I did once and it was scary because his face got beat red like a giant tomato. I'll never forget the sound he made when he burst it sounded like a balloon leaking.

If you take something dangerous away from a child who was playing with it, they may cry, but the pain is not caused by the intent, it was caused by how the action made them feel. The parent can't deny the child's pain, but they also can't be "blamed" for it. On the other hand, if a parent punched a kid's shoulder too hard and it hurt them, whether the pain was intentional or not the parent can be blamed for it. What's important about pain is the intent, responsibility, and having enough compassion to turn any combination into a positive change.

I love the complexity of their relationship. Lenny can't find ways to express himself without being mildly abusive and the only reason this relationship exists is because Louie is incredibly kind and a bit of a pushover. Despite how much Lenny challenges Louie's boundaries on a daily basis, Lenny completely collapses when Louis tries to do the same. Not only that, Lenny tries to paint himself as the victim despite how Louis has been taking all of the abusive load of the relationship. Really shows that some people honestly don't deserve friends because of how blind they are to how poorly they treat other people. Lenny may have had a history of extreme loneliness, but that doesn't just mean he gets to push Louie around at his leisure. There's a definitely a difference between some friendly, mutual horseplay and straight up abuse.

This is a really hard scene to act because the emotions are really subtle, this is not a huge dramatic scene, in this scene you have to make sure that you don't overact even slightly because you would hurt the reality of the scene. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't write down the entire dialogue, they just had a feeling of the scene and improvised because this is a very real situation. Lenny is not an enemy of Louis, he is just being very annoying and Louie has to say something. That is a very real situation.

Guy Person Realistic? That was far from realistic. In fact, I think what distinguishes Louie from many other TV shows is that he has the power to show how every human being would like to resolve personal issues with people. Most men, women, children, teenagers, whoever, wouldn't directly tell people what they honestly feel. They would find another way talking around it, avoiding it. Louie speaks from our very soul. At first you feel for Louie having to take this obnoxious guy's abuse and self-absorbed behavior, and then almost immediately it shows you the other side and you feel for this guy who is a well intentioned goofball but fails to impress or make friends with any of the people he meets by being too overbearing, which is something we can all sort of identify with at some point....and then you can see why Louie's words seem a bit hurtful. I’m Lenny. This episode always resonated with me. 37, never married, no kids. Firefighter for 15 years, never promoted. Always picked last in school, sat alone at lunch all through high school, never invited out with coworkers.... when he says “I know that I’m hard to be around” ... I felt that.

It is so interesting. Lenny's character is a good guy but he's suffer (and others) because no one ever told him honestly what is wrong with his behavior. People are scared to draw a line, preffer to avoid contact with someone physicaly stronger. So Lennies of the world never had opportunity to understand why what they did is upseting people. Something natural for one can be harmful to other. Why he is good guy? Because he said he is always excited to watch Louie's shows. Maybe he doesnt love Louie's acts (as he mentioned ;) ) but still admires him on his way.

this episode and the one with doug stanhope really left an impression on me, great acting
@MegaSnippezz5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Both have similar tones throughout. It almost gives us the sense that no matter how depressed Louie is, his life could be much worse. The ending of both contrast also. In the end of Doug, we have the question if he actually killed himself or not, but in this one the ending is positive as they both end up spending more time with each other. As they are both similar, they can also beautifully contrast each other also.

This scene resonates with me really well. Lenny is my father, and we get into fights like this all the time. Ultimately he chalks up his toxic behavior as killing time cuz hes old and has nothing else to do and its just harmless. It makes me feel bad cuz hes delegitimizing my feeling towards what he is doing. I often do feel bad cuz i wish i could just let him go on and on cuz hes right, he is old and he has no hobbies or friends. But at the sometimes, he cant expect me to be a punching bag for him forever. I dont really know what to do. At least if this was just some guy, u can just kick them out of your life. Its harder when its ur dad.
@fuzzy8593 Жыл бұрын
The way I approached it with my old school, passive aggressive, jab dishing dad was just by saying, “Dad, you know we can just talk right? We should be able to talk about anything, we love each other.” Things were never so one sided after that day, and I am glad I said it to him. Idk if this helps at all, but it worked for me. Wishing you the best.

So damn iconic. Louie was ten years ahead of everyone, sometimes too much. Rapaport was phenomenal, but louie and his writing are beyond incredible

What I find so great about this scene is that you can sympathize with both characters. You feel sorry for Michael Rapaport’s character and we all have been in Louis’s position at some point.

I think its his voice. I think he does great work with emotion and presenting them as authentic in even the simplest of dialogue. Like you can really see and hear the character processing the words in the moment. But that voice is so distinct to him. I think it's distracting for some people. Makes them see the actor not the character

Well, I find Rapaport to be really unlikable and this character is supposed to be really unlikable so it works
@througheverything Жыл бұрын
This is way too real for me. What a good dissection of human interaction. You side with Louie thinking he’s finally saying what we’re all thinking, then he presents us with the fact that dislikable people know that they’re dislikable, a fact that should be obvious but it still hits us by surprise.

The worst thing is when you have bad friends and acquaintances, and you have no choice but to keep them because you’re so lonely you’d rather suffer through them hurting you than suffer through more loneliness.

Louie is realistic in the sense that louie doesn’t just have the same group of friends he hangs out with all the time. Sometimes he hangs out with an old friend he bumped into. Sometimes it’s his brother. Sometimes it’s a different old friend. And then another different old friend. I’m not doing a great job at explaining what I mean but I hope you get the point
@davewatne33744 жыл бұрын
I do. It shows that nothing is stagnant and that he acts differently with different people, like everyone does. He was really trying to be nice and patient with Lenny like he always had to be before until he realized they dont have that tie that forces him to tolerate Lenny's obnoxiousness.
@yellowdog10785 жыл бұрын
The most amazing scene ... just everything ... the dialogue is so on point, and then the twist when Lenny goes off - and then the end. So clever.
