Thanks Dr. Honda! When you said "yeah but she's not your therapist" I actually realised that many of the people I interact with require that level of patience and engagement from me. Lol, the way people are waiting for Dr Honda to comment on 'that scene' is hilarious to me 😅 Personally as a 'quiet' person, these videos between this couple have been really helpful and I've been saving them to refer back to later. Even though I think my communication skills have improved over the years, this has helped me look to reflect on my past and really look at how my behaviour has influenced situations in a way I didn't want because I was deathly scared of being rejected. You described it so well, outwardly I would seem calm, but on the inside, I would be panicking, desperately trying to figure out what to say. My heart would beat faster, I could hear the blood rushing through my ears, it would feel like my brain wasn't working because the words just wouldn't come out, sometimes my hands would start to shake. And if I managed to say something, I'd stumble over my words, or my voice would be shaky, than of course I'd feel stupid for saying anything and I'd shut down even more. I'm a lot better now but I still need a lot of work and having positive experiences (corrective experiences) has really helped to build my confidence. All this to say, I appreciate you Dr Honda for more than just 'reacting' to the show but in really share your knowledge and understanding. Not just with this show but your other commentaries too 😊

JP reminds me so much of my ex partner. He was exhausting. Totally clueless, could only hear himself talk, and blamed everyone around him so it was other peoples responsibility to manage his emotions. I stuck it out with my ex for over 10 years thinking if I just figured out the exact right thing to say and how to say it, he’d be capable of an emotionally intelligent conversation. Nope. We’d be in couples therapy and he’d just sit there. Our therapist would ask him questions and he’d say “I don’t know” and refuse to engage in any meaningful way unless he was trying to convince me I was wrong, a lot like JP. He got even more pissed when our therapist wanted to help me focus on learning to “hold my position” instead of just acquiescing to avoid a fight. He never told the therapist how mad he was though. I tired to bring it up but he just sat their blank like he had no idea what I was talking about. He felt totally comfortable just lying to the therapist’s face and then berating me on the drive home for not supporting his lie and being “too honest.” I’ve been single for 5 years now and it is GLORIOUS. I never realized how lonely I was feeling in my relationship until we broke up and I was actually alone but felt no more loneliness.
@Kaelush Жыл бұрын
Gosh, I am sorry you went through that and I feel you. My ex was a bit similar, but closer to Aussie's behaviour. We tried couples therapy until he refused because of something that the therapist allegedly said in a one-on-one session, and to this day, I still don't know what it was. If I may ask, how have you dealt with the aftermath? The relationship sounds like it would have been a lot to work through. Staying single does sound extremely appealing! ;-)
@Alayhoo Жыл бұрын
@@Kaelush Hhmm… that’s a good question. I’ve taken a lot of time to reflect on the big picture of our relationship. We got together when we were only 17 years old and I changed significantly during college and grad school in terms of my values whereas he dropped out of college, did not like to be challenged intellectually, liked to stay surface level and pretty much kept the same outlook he had in high school up until the day we broke up. He was very mature for his age when we first got together, it’s why I was attracted to him, but it was like he stayed in that headspace and didn’t grow with me as we aged. Coming to the realization that I actually didn’t need someone to validate my existence was a huge part of it. I also did a lot of self-exploration of my sexuality and thought about whether I actually wanted to be with someone or if i just felt obligated. All of that led me to find out I’m actually asexual! Sure, men are physically attractive, but I’d never date one again lol. My parents also got divorced a couple years before we split and seeing that shit show really impacted the break up because (and yes this is judgey of me) I did not under any circumstances want to act like mom did during the divorce. So I vowed to myself that when my ex and I split, I would not behave desperate for affection or his attention, never beg him to love me, and never say any of the messes up stuff my mom did about my father (like, he deserves to die and I wish he was dead because it would make it easier on me). I had never seen my mother so unhinged it terrified me. I will say that since he and I split, I’ve become significantly more on the avoidant side of attachment, struggle to maintain friendships and feel this intense pervasive drive for autonomy that seems to eclipse any desire I may have for a intimate relationship of any kind. Now I only feel lonely when I’m with other people. So, maybe I haven’t dealt with it the aftermath so well… 😂 But that’s why I’m in therapy twice a week. I need all the “corrective experiences” I can get!

When people are severely traumatized, it can cause them to act in very strange ways. Notice how JP on one hand acts like he can't stand Taylor or like he finds her repulsive, then on the other hand he says things like "Keep trying, don't give up on me, I want this to work." He is afraid of being close and afraid of losing her at the same time. It looks like the internal turmoil that goes on for people struggling with disorganized attachment, the phrase I've often heard used to describe it is, "I hate you, don't leave me!"

That's such a good reminder that we often expect people's partners to be even more patient and tolerant than even therapists, all without training AND while expecting them to endure the burden of disregarding their own needs (b/c if someone's behavior is bothering their partner, then the partner's needs are not being met) 24/7! (Of course it's good to be able to meet one's own needs and not expect all of one's needs to be met from a partner, but part of the point of a partnership is meeting needs that can't be met through other relationships). Therapists ARE paid for their work and, as Dr. Honda said, therapists have no attachment to their clients in terms of engaging with them to meet emotional needs (beyond the emotional satisfaction derived from their work, perhaps). Partners are not, and yet we expect them to be saints.

Also wasn't there a couple that looked a lot like Taylor and JP? where the dude could barely maintain eye contact with her when they got out? And they broke up really quickly

I think it’s because when people like JP come even remotely close to actualizing their OWN emotions and insecurities it becomes easiest to pivot and resort to “well this is how *you* fall short (because I feel like I’m falling short right now)” it doesn’t excuse it but it explains it

Come on, so close now. I wonder what Dr Honda will say, maybe just "yikes, that makes no sense" 🤔

I think it will by far not be as big of a reaction as people here seem to think or hope for. 😅 I actually think this comment section is making a much bigger deal out of that scene than it really was.

@@zimtapfel There is not much to comment. It's just an outlandish excuse from JP

I really appreciate you and your content, Dr. Honda, but it seems from the comments section that we are getting a bit frustrated with 30-minute videos covering less than 3 minutes of content from the show. Maybe the commentary could be edited or condensed a bit for brevity?

I realized while listening to this that I feel so defensive of JP because I've been in his shoes where I'm awkward and quiet and *I just don't know what to say*, but I do enjoy the company I'm in, so I'm just vibing, but the other person/people are not and it's just... a mess?

Dr. H - this defensive structure you're describing where no matter how nice she says something, he still thinks it's an attack - are you describing disorganized attachment style? My husband does this, it's awful. If it's not, please let me know what topic I should go read about.
@PsychologyInSeattle Жыл бұрын
Yes, that defense can accompany disorganized attachment, but it can be a part of any attachment style - but more likely it would be part of an insecure attachment style. For people who distort others as being hostile/rejecting, they likely experienced hostility and rejection chronically early in life, and they learned to assume that's happening, even if the other person is merely upset or providing feedback.

@@PsychologyInSeattle Thank you so much for explaining. Unfortunately, that defense structure tracks. I appreciate the insight.

I'm curious to see you react to the sexual assault allegations and lawsuit that LiB is being hit with (as more details emerge). I know you spoke to a producer and it seemed like she had the best intentions but I was shocked to learn about lack of action on the producer's part in regards to the sexual assault. LiB seems so incredibly unhealthy behind the scenes that I'm thinking it's better to just cancel the whole thing.

I say "shocked" but at this point "disappointed but not surprised" is more accurate tbh.

In the pods, JP cried about having an “angry mother” which sounded like he was severely abused growing up. Being abused by parents will to some extent stunt a child’s emotional/relational development. Dr Honda even comments here that JP acts like a child, stuck in repetitively blaming Taylor as a way to defend himself from what he thinks are unfair “accusations”, unable to take in what she’s actually saying. My guess is that JP has such a low self esteem and high defensiveness in life in general, and that he due to fear immediately shut down after meeting Taylor since the whole experience became “real” when they no longer were in the pods. I’m waiting for the next episode from Dr Honda, where JP reeeeaally goes full on dick when he comments on Taylors appearance, showing tendencies of controlling behaviour!
