Pretty much just proves his hypothesis imo 😅 he's deeply insecure and blaming an external source for it. He does feel insecure about the makeup, I truly believe that, but he lacks the awareness to realize that the makeup isn't the problem.

I don't think it's something to be admired, it's something women have to do to not be labelled as crazy and prove men right that we are the problem by showing emotions and a reaction to being insulted and blamed for everything. Taylor even mentions that, but JP just retorts that she seemed fake, as opposed to accepting her explanation that she wanted to look nice for him on their first meeting - and probably thought he would like it and appreciate the effort. What I also find strange is that she apparently has not worn makeup since (I think that is what she said in the conversation) so it’s not like she wears a lot of makeup, fake lashes, etc as her everyday look. So it’s a one-off thing JP is focusing on and blaming for the whole awkwardness between them. It’s almost like he is accusing her of trying to trick him or seduce him with her long fake lashes like some evil temptress witch.

JP is just so insecure that he can’t handle entertaining the idea that he is the reason for the awkwardness. Truth is deep down he knows it, and probably thinks he is completely unlovable and that’s what he is running from. The only thing he can come up with in order to shift the blame is the makeup thing, which is just ridiculous. He needed there to be some explanation for his behavior, which he probably doesn’t understand himself, and like Dr. Honda put it, he’s just grasping at straws. The truth is he is probably utterly terrified of Taylor and it has nothing to do with her, (she is amazing) and has everything to do with some kind of severe abuse from childhood that would cause the child to fear their attachment figures. I think the reason he is so quiet and awkward is because he is so distressed that his nervous system has gone into the freeze response. None of this is Taylor’s fault and JP needs help bad.

She is confronting a matter head-on in her relationship and if she didn't ask question his behavior, she wouldn't have had this conversation and found out about his strange views/misogyny. She dodged a huge bullet because she addressed an issue head-on. Let's normalize women standing up for themselves in a calm, assertive manner like Taylor.

It’s honestly sad seeing the echo chamber of toxic ideas that must be in JPs head/how he may have got there. I’m remembering now when JP was talking about all the abuse he and his sisters experienced from their mother - he probably ended up with a very very complicated view of women and when he couldn’t form healthy relationships… incel culture was there to drag him down and tell him “you don’t need therapy, it’s all women’s fault!” It seems like he’s a good guy at heart that has been led down some really dangerous paths. I really hope he finds his way out of it and into some good healthy therapy/mindsets.

I think it's tempting to lose empathy towards JP after this conversation. But Dr. Kirk's initial hypothesis still stands. JP has learned to expect that people are going to hurt him and it scares him so much that every move seems dangerous to him. So he doesn't move at all. He completely shuts down and loses connection to himself. So when Taylor asks him what he thinks or feels about their relationship or about anything at all, he doesn't have the answer, which causes him more shame. Like Taylor said, the makeup talk is an excuse. He is desperate, because in his mind, if he doesn't come up with something to defend himself, we are all going see how scared and helpless he is, and that's terrifing. It's a shame that his strategy is to shift the blame onto the other person and try to make them doubt themselves. Of course, that then causes the other person to lose empathy towards him and he ends up in that very place he was trying to run away from. It is possible that if Taylor wasn't this attractive and mature his patterns wouldn't be this activated. But more importantly, his relationship to Taylor revealed his relationship with himself.

@julie91295
@julie91295 Жыл бұрын
Yeh I think both hypotheses he had can be true. JP prob did frequent the incel forum. Imagine being a young man having the awkward phases and insecurities every boy has and at that critical moment of your development, you get into all the incel rhetoric and start to blame all that upset feeling you have onto the very object of desire you’re having a hard time with. In doing so, he literally create a self fulfilling fantasy of women are fake and manipulative if they look/present a certain way (aka. Wear make up, be confident, atttractic, etc.) and therefore, they will undermine and leave you. It’s best to look down on them and keep them in line. In the pod, without the visuals, I think it was easier for him to shed the incel defense mechanism bc his insecurities weren’t triggered. Upon seeing her, he probably experience all the awkwardness and insecurities dr Honda talked about before while still yearning for her and want to be with her. At this point, his defense mechanism kicked in and all the incel rhetoric he always used as a shield kicked in as well. He subconsciously grabbed on to that excuse to bring her down a peg as a way to feel more secure and as a way to explain away all this confusing feelings he got going on. In doing so, he’s literally stonewalling and pushing her away. As he’s saying all this nonsense to her, you can still see him actually want to keep her around as well. But he’s so conditioned in the way that he actually believe what he’s saying bc that’s the only way he made sense of his awkwardness and insecurities all his life. It’s so sad. It’s also such a clear example of how these misogynistic ideals ruin men’s happiness. Like their main complaint is women are evil and the scourge of life for not wanting them. Here it is a beautiful girl genuinely love and want to be with JP and bc of the way he was conditioned, he stonewalled and pushed her away with his insane defense. Thus, proving his own warp reality himself.

Canadian here: Appreciates all quirky humour from you, Dr Honda😆 I actually dated a guy in my early thirties who DESPISED me wearing makeup. Funny, cause he had ZERO problem being attracted to me when we first met at a salsa club (in makeup and skimpy clothes) and didnt find women who wore it (outside of me) unattractive. Quite the opposite, he thought they were sexy AF. Thank God, that relationship didnt have a long shelf-life as I saw many other red flags of control and dominance creep up and left his ass. Sadly, years later, he ended up marrying some young girl in her early 20's who he probably thought he could better control😔

So happy when you got to this section. The messed up thing is she has not worn makeup for the rest of the time that they've been together. And like you said and she said I dressed up and put on makeup one time. So basically you want her to go bear face all the time? And how is that that she's fake? Like you said, lots of women wear makeup. I'm not a big makeup person but when we're going somewhere nice I'm putting on a full face. Yeah he's got some traumas and it could be the insul thing but remember his mom used to berate his sisters because of the man she chose so maybe that has them to do with it too

JP being an incel has been my guess from the jump!! I felt it from when it talked about his mom, his mannerisms, his “fuck that” response, etc. it just felt off. I think it’s really important to think about how he saw woman and girls growing up. He saw his mom as the villain due to the abuse he unfortunately witnessed and endured. Then he probably saw his sister’s as unable to defend themselves. I can’t help but feel like this has a huge impact on his view of women. Glad we’ve reached this scene.

JP suddenly went to the top of my "sh*t-list" (followed by Uche). Also, it was funny watching this and feeling all this anger toward JP... because my wonderful, emotionally healthy, fabulous husband is also named JP. 😅 I had fun ranting about hating "LIB-JP" to my husband lol.

I remember JP cried in the pods when he described how his mom would wake up his sisters in the middle of the night to scream at them and he wished he could’ve protected them. When Taylor asked why his mom did that, he said something about how his mother didn’t want them to end up like her…I wonder if she’d berate the daughters about wearing too much makeup and looking “easy” or something and JP has internalized some of this messaging? I sense though that he suffers from such low self-worth that he inadvertently sabotaged the relationship so he can retreat and protect himself. I hit the vibe he probably felt intimidated by Taylor or something…
@FreeSpirit022
@FreeSpirit022 Жыл бұрын
I have a theory.. At the beginning of the show when Taylor had introduced herself, she mentioned that in the past, she had a hard time loving herself. Someone with these past insecurities can make themselves scrutinise how they are inside and how they physically look on the outside. Not knowing for sure, but if she had brought up this subject with JP in the pods, about her having issues regarding her not loving herself in the past, then that might've been a way that JP could've avoided the answer by deflecting, as she kept asking him why there was awkwardness between the two of them since day one. I felt, perhaps, this was a way he could get out of that conversation that he kept avoiding by distracting Taylor with something that she had struggled in the past with.

Didn't he say earlier that his mom was tough on his sisters about wearing makeup or trying to date men because of her past? I keep thinking maybe that's where his misogyny is coming from. It sounded like he had a better relationship with his mom because he is a male. Also, the way he kissed her made me think he wasn't attracted to her it was like he would recoil quickly after kissing her. That part was weird and awkward to me.
@ErikaJadeLives
@ErikaJadeLives Жыл бұрын
This is EXACTLY what I have been thinking the whole time about how his strong dislike for makeup is linked to his childhood! The irony is that he is passing the same judgement on Taylor. He's trying not to be like his mom by being quiet instead of yelling, but still shares some of her beliefs/logic. It actually quite sad. I hope he is dealing with the public scrutiny okay, but at the same time takes the opportunity to take a look at himself.

Yeah, I don't know about the kiss thing. Even if I was attracted to someone and had talked with them. I'd be awkward AF to kiss someone the first time I'm seeing them. Especially being filmed while doing it. It's the whole performance and getting in my head. I think he actually does find her very attractive which is intensifying his weirdness around women/people. Agree with everything else you said though.

The question I have is, when has a woman ever not worn makeup in that occasion, when they first meet the grooms to be and they are proposed to? What show has he been watching that he had that expectation?! Second question: is it possible that he has some trauma with his mother (remember his story about how his mother mistreated his sisters), and he transferred that hatred to other women, particularly women that look like her (maybe she wore makeup?)?

And if you look at most of the other scenes she wore little to no makeup. So he could assume that she normally doesn't always wear a lot of makeup, that she just wore it for the reveal. The comment made no sense, There wasn't an issue. He was just deflecting. Instead of taking responsibility for his behavior he chose to put her down. He could have crippling anxiety and he should seek treatment for it. You can sympathize with his pain, but his behavior to Taylor is unjustifiable.

I've been wondering if JP's mom used to be abusive towards his sister's about their makeup and message it send to boys/men. Still that doesn't make up for his bad delivery of his preferences on makeup and his using it as a reason to not talk to her. All he had to do was tell her (when they aren't talking about their relationship) that he likes how she looks without or without much makeup, or when she has a lot on tell her that he wants to be careful about hugging because he doesn't want to have to dry clean his suit. His comment about her freckles was perfect, nothing more needed.

I'm tired of some people with small minds thinking that BS is a compliment, it is not. I'm sorry that JP got tricked into going to a tv show where 99.99 percent of women AND men are going to be wearing some type of makeup, why did he think it was a good idea to participate in this experiment? money ? travel ?
